Astro Supersport are showing 8 of the 10 Premier League matches every weekend nowadays. When Supersport first started broadcasting their 'own' Premiership matches, I thought it was a rather big waste of money. ESPN Star (now FOX Sports) had the better coverage, production etc., and there is no point for Astro to produce their own, inferior coverage when they have rights to ESPN anyway.
Maybe there are business reasons behind moving the matches to Supersport, but my word, their coverage is just sub-par. Everything just seem a bit wrong - the atmosphere, the panel, the production value, the stupid Astro Supersport mugs. And Paul Parker is just awful (although he used to show up on ESPN Star as well). I'm not sure if I'm just being nostalgic, but ESPN Star was great back in the John Dykes days. After John Dykes left it was not as good, but still much better than Supersport's coverage. I used to watch most of the pre-shows for Premier League matches, now I switch channels to Supersport only when it's kickoff time.
Maybe there are people out there who enjoys the Supersport shows (I personally think Abbas Saad is alright), but IMO they should just keep to covering the other European leagues. They're showing the early Bundesliga/Serie A matches (or even Copa Libertadores in the morning) anyway, I'm sure there are people who would like some analysis rather than Eurosportnews at half-time. Supersport's coverage is fine when there's no alternative (Peru v Venezuela at 4.55am), but I want Fox's coverage for Premier League matches.
Astro Supersport vs ESPN Star (FOX), Which one has the better BPL coverage?
