But let's say I want a thin gaming laptop with good performance. The one I'm looking at is 17 inch, thin, with i7 processor and a GTX 765M... Despite its size , the performance should be on par with the GT series that has the same gpu right ?
*
You can only find GTX770M and GTX780M in GT series, GS70 is equipped with GTX765M, performance more or less down by 20% compared to GTX770M. Plus, if you fully maximize GS70 performance, play every game on high settings, then you will feel a lot of heat.

Thin profile + performance + Cooling efficiency, I think only Illegear RS series can manage to do so.

Otherwise, wait for new MSI laptops refreshed with GTX860M few months later, I read some articles saying that it has close performance with GTX770M though it is still 128bit and GTX870M is very close to GTX780M.

Aside from the heat, are there any drawbacks ? Let's say GS70 vs GE60 20E . Both should perform the same right since it has the same graphic card and processor except that GS70 will heat up quicker right ?

Thanks for the patience in answering my question, as I have never own a gaming laptop before and I am looking forward to purchasing a thin gaming laptop so MSI was the first I looked into.
*
hmmm, I cant really tell the difference between GS70 and GE60 2OE in terms of cooling performance. But GE60 2OE has single fan while GS70 has twin fan, due to form factor (15" vs 17"), GE60 2OE may heat up faster but the difference is really small.

My suggestion for MSI GE and GS series, you will definitely require a cooling pad because both of them cant cool down in a short time as you gaming at high settings. You can turn on Cooler Boost feature to increase fan speed but the noise is audible (imagine a hair dryer).

The drawback for GS70 is without built-in dvdrom but you can buy external one with RM100+. Other than that, it is quite a decent gaming laptop but heat is the major concern you should take into account when come to gaming laptop.

edit: heat sink of GS70

Thank you very much for clarifying this with me. I didn't realise it does not comes with a dvd-rom .. I guess most likely I will still go with GS70. Thanks for your time and patience !

You are welcome, you can ask for user experience from @kyu85 as he owns GS70 smile.gif

Guys, what are you thoughts on Toshiba Qosmio X75 (With GTX 770M) vs GS70 ? I find it cheaper than MSI and it comes with SSD and a blueray writer except that its thicker.
*
I am pretty sure the price you find for Qosmio is arround RM4k. tongue.gif

You check with notebookcheck with similar model of X70:

Yes, it's around RM4,000 .. will the heat management of GS70 better than Qosmio as it runs on 2 fans ?
*
I would say GS70 is hotter under heavy gaming load, even though GS70 has twin fans but due to slim profile and less vent hole on back side, you will feel the heat faster on keyboard and palm rest surface.

For Toshiba Qosmio, single fan design and inadequate vent hole contribute to temperature rise but seems it is thick enough, it should be colder than GS70 under heavy gaming. However, GTX770M is at least a high class gaming GPU, you can actually feel the heat build up faster.

Also, that RM4k Qosmio is not MYR set, so experience warranty issue with Toshiba Malaysia if you buy it.

If you want smooth gaming experience + better cooling, either go for Illegear RS or MSI GT. i recommend MSI GT if you want everthing decent on a laptop. Also, the cooler boost feature is very good as you can turn on anytime o want if you feel the heat, though it sound like hair dryer.

hi there
right now planning either to get alienware or msi depending on my budget
what do you guys think about msi ge70?
any problems that anyone lf you facing yet?
especially on heating issues or perfomance issues?
and what about battery life?
*
I think not many GE70 here, so far I haven seen any user.

Even the shops are selling GP60/70, GE60, GT60/70 and GS70.

May be you can go for GS70 non-raid version bcs more or less the same with GE70 in terms of price.

what is the difference between both of them?
and lets say I'm buying gs70, what cons and problems of the laptop i should know beforehand?
*
GS70 has twin fan and slimmer design.

If you buy GS70, you will experience heat issue when you are in heavy load or heavy gaming, this cant be avoided for every slim profile laptop.

Also, GS70 dont have DVDrom and battery is built-in which may be troublesome for some users.

Other than that, it is a good build quality laptop for people who want bigger screen and strong performance while light enough for mobile use.

Just sharing my experience with MSI service:

I wanted to upgrade the HDD with 1 TB SSHD on my GE40.  I bought the SSHD at a local computer store and asked them to install.  Can't because there's a warranty sticker blocking the screw to open the chasis.

So, I called MSI careline and asked about this.  They said, for RM85, they can factory restore my computer, transfer the contents of the existing drive into the new drive and stick a new sticker for warranty.  THAT was on the phone.

I went to the local MSI Service Center and it was like "back to square one".  Here are the issues:
- Warranty for laptop is one year, but included OS can only be restored within 3 months.  After that, I have to buy my own.
- The charge is RM85 - to swap (no cloning, just physical swapping of the drive) and sticking a new sticker (all of which I can do myself, if I had the sticker).
- Can't factory reset unless using the recovery drive on the existing drive.

Since my laptop is more than 3 months old, I can't get MSI to do a fresh reset, unless I provide the recovery partition.  Unfortunately, I accidentally deleted it when updating to 8.1.  I do, however, have the 4 recovery DVD I made just before the upgrade.

So now, I'm faced with a dilemma.  Should I swap the disks myself and restore using the 4 Recovery DVDs?  Will it restore everything (including the recovery partition) back to the original factory settings?  Or am I screwed into buying a new OS?

Regardless, to get warranty, I need the sticker, which will cost me a whopping RM85 just for the guy to stick a new warranty sticker!

Opinion?
*
Is your GE40 Malaysia set? Bcs you mention it is 1 yr while it is supposed to be 2 yrs right?

I recommend you ask @storm88 for help bcs he is authorized MSI seller, not sure how much he will charge you.

If you swap disk by yourself, you will lose warranty based on how MSI define the situation, not really recommend as you are still warranty covered.

sorry to ask , but what is 2OD mean ?
*
model variant or number, basically 2OC is basic, 2OD is medium while 2OE is highest if you look at GE series.

For GT70, basic is GT70 2OC which is GTX770M, 2OD starts with GTX780M, next will be CPU and possibly SSD or raid upgrade until highest model of 4930MX.

Hi guys i would like to ask,
Is the heat management on ge60 20e very bad?
How hot can it really get? Up to the point u cant even touch the laptop or is it still viable to carry around?
Need some insights here thank you smile.gif
*
Not very bad, but it is not suitable for consistent heavy gaming bcs its cooling cant catch up with heat dissipating, eventually, you will feel the heat.

But not until the extent like hot water, may be hair dryer or even warm water.

If you buy GE60, better buy a cooler.

If just like browsing and streaming videos would it get hot? So basically even if its "hot" its still acceptable right?
*
If you just surf internet, watch some youtube and playing Dota, you will not feel hot.

What I mean heavy gaming is when you play high settings games where putting your GPU and CPU close to their performance limit, then you will feel hot.

Well from ur sig, ur using the gt series.. so.. not a fair comparison haha sweat.gif  sweat.gif
Anyway thanks for the insight..
might pick up the ge60-20e.. maybe not..
huhu lets just hope when i see it in person it appeals enough tongue.gif

oklah, one thing I like MSI feature is cooler boost and it is fully manual where you think you need it then activate it.

Though GT is decent in cooling, but my vote goes for Alienware.

By the way, if you want to buy GE60 2OE, why not wait for few weeks first bcs new chasis is coming in for GE series in china, so I think Malaysia will have it.

Even GS60 may be available if possible, all of them will be refreshed with new Nvidia 800M series GPU.

you can check for authorized MSI seller through MSI Malaysia website, as long as it is local set then fine

Doubt those websites are authorized resellers, so what kinda set are they selling? Refurbish set?
*
I think they sell local sets too, it is just that they may not be "authorized MSI seller".

They still can get stock from local distributor and sell it, as long as the stock is local set, then you should not need to worry.

Local or not only be significant when comes to warranty claim, for example, Illegear on their website insists that the stock purchased from "authorized Illegear seller" can only proceed to warranty claim.

Sharing info on GE40 upgrade.

I finally got MSI service center to swap the 750GB HDD with a 1 TB SSHD. A simple upgrade but the warranty sticker got in the way.

The charge is a standard RM85 (same price at all SC). Very expensive sticker indeed since I opt not to have them factory restore the new drive. Didn't want to leave laptop there, so I used my own 4 recovery DVDs.

Recovery went well. I chose full restore and it created and partitioned the new 1TB drive into several partitions, including recovery partitions (Yay!)

SSHD is noticeably faster. (More Yay!) Opening programs now is in a blink of an eye! Haven't tried gaming yet.

Unfortunately, I didn't see any option of setting the sizes of the partitions OS_install and Data. And upon upgrading to Windows 8.1, it created another recovery partition in between the two. Sigh.

Anyone know how I can increase the size of Data and shrink OS_install? I certainly don't need almost 600GB in OS and 300GB in Data is tiny. The problem now is the hidden recovery partition in between. Is it safe to move that?
*
Congrats, but RM85 is quite expensive.....I plan to upgrade 8GB ram also, i wonder I need to upgrade or not since RM85 is quite....... sad.gif

For shrinking partition size, I think you need third party software to do so, Disk Management in Windows cant do that if you have recovery stucked between C and D

Hi guys, am currently using GT70 and just installed Battlefield 4..When running the game, it asked me to upgrade my driver for a better performance...the problem is, NVIDIA Geforce Experience only detect latest driver up to ver 311.83.
Not that the driver got any issues running games, but just wandering does anybody update their graphic driver here? if so which firmware and does it run better than the 311.83? thanks smile.gif
*
311.83 quite old, I keep updating Nvidia driver as well, currently using 334.89. But I never try using beta, you can go to Nvidia website to look for changelog. If I am not mistaken, 334.89 has several gaming improvement varies from 5%~20%.
