But seriously though, don't do that in FF games. The habit of skipping NPC text is probably caused by playing too many other MMO out there which either has really bad translation, or totally has nothing to offer in NPC text.
FFXIV is one of the FF series, in which upon completion you actually played another number in FF series. I highly recommend reading all the texts. In many cases, not doing that will result in asking question such as above, or even fail some quests multiple time having no idea what's going on, or missed some hint given by NPC.

Which server you are playing on?

Played in Tonberry in OB, Masamune in EA, never had a single issue (except character creation restricted during 1st hour)...never seen error code. Seriously. Don't believe, ask around.

So, I suggest for your better gameplay experience in long-run: change to a JP server.

FFXIV must love me....just came back from work, didn't even know got maintenance, just launch, see some update takes 3mins, press Play, select character, pops-up "Queue 9XX", but after like 1 mins, load and I am in game already, lol. Playing now.

I am right infront of Copperbell Mines, I am lv21 but run all the way from Ul'dah to the entrance because my starting city is Gridania, and along the way completed two FATE event...

I see "Gardivy Kirmie" and "Lydall Momoda" is online too. And just now "Arzwarth Meow" just state about how he got DC'ed but it never happen to me, and I told him so.

Don't believe, ask those people...
