Go to Character Configuration, there's a section with "Targeting" Tab, make sure you enable the target filtering. Also, different settings for:
a) when weapon is drawn
b) when weapoin is sheathed
so make sure you are in the right situation, you can change stance by pressing Z.

Also, if you hold X, and didn't change any settings, then by default you will only able to select monsters.
