Microsoft Corp., the world's largest maker of software, will not release next-generation graphics application programming interface (API) called DirectX 10 for the currently shipping Windows XP operating system (OS), instead, the company will keep the new API strictly for the forthcoming Windows Vista OS, despite earlier assumptions about DirectX 10 for the XP. During a DirectX 10-related event in London, UK, Richard Huddy, ATI Technologies' software developers relations chief, said that Microsoft's Vista will integrate DirectX 10 and DirectX 9 APIs for different types of hardware, but the current Windows XP will not get DirectX 10 support, as suggested some rumours earlier. For end users this means that to get the most advantages of the new-generation graphics processing units (GPUs), the new OS will be required. Full story: xbitlabs.com

I agree it is dirty trick.
I do remember Windows Media Player also won't have version 10 for Windows 2000.

Where's DirectX 9.0L? I thought although we won't have DX10 on XP, but at least we would have WGF... This post has been edited by X.E.D: May 26 2006, 05:42 PM

Could it be possible that it's a limitation with Windows XP? Making it incompatible with DX10?

Yep, its long known that there will be no dx10 for WinXP QUOTE(X.E.D @ May 26 2006, 05:42 PM) Where's DirectX 9.0L? I thought although we won't have DX10 on XP, but at least we would have WGF... That is for Window Vista as well IIRC. DX10 is not backward compatible with non dx10 hardware, so 9.0L is to make sure vista runs with current dx9 video card or older. QUOTE(Dreamworks @ May 26 2006, 05:51 PM) Could it be possible that it's a limitation with Windows XP? Making it incompatible with DX10? Probably. at least thats what they say. Window Vista was build ground up.

QUOTE(Hornet @ May 26 2006, 06:37 PM) Probably. at least thats what they say. Window Vista was build ground up. Yeah, they might be telling the truth. If not, why do they need to design another seperate DX9 API for Vista. This post has been edited by Dreamworks: May 26 2006, 08:23 PM
