i bought from ebay.
i noticed amazon prices were too expensive when you added in shipping costs. but for ebay it was quite reasonable, and with shipping included, the price for the drive was cheaper than buying the drive locally. if buy local they also order from overseas, but difference is they add more to the cost for their own profit margins for doing so.
anyways if your trying to find locally be very careful, by checking the hgst model number. you will notice near the end a coding e.g. ALA or ALE. the one you want is ALE which is NATIVE 4ksectors, which can emulate 512. Whereas ALA is native 512
4k sectors is better for hdds with 2tb or higher capacities, so it's best to stick to a native 4k sector native hdd, especially when using a modern os like windows 7 and above.
apparently the locally stocked hgst i found were all trying to sell ALA's .... lel...
if you go to the HGST site or google, they will explain the hgst hdd drive codes which usually denotes stuff like
7200rpm, capacity size, 4k or 512 sectors, SAS or SATA etc etc.....
so when buying from ebay, make sure it's exactly the model based on the model number from the site with the features you need. Also double check pricing once shipping is also tallied.
Also very importantly check the ebay sellers reputation among existing/prior buyers whether they are trustworthy or not. especially important to confirm the drives previous buyers bought, were infact factory sealed, and smart info registred these drives as totally brand new, without power on hours registering more than 10 hours or something like that; as that would indicate a second hand drive, which is something you should avoid.
buying from ebay can be done using paypal once your credit card details had been verified for use to paypal. yes unfortunately buying from ebay right now will be done by paying in USD ..... which is kinda bad right now cause of 4.3 or so exchange rate MYR to USD ..... but locally no hgst stocked so no choice.
Anyway i bought a 4tb 7k4000 ultrastar for desktop use. so for you maybe the HGST FREENAS desktar which is for raid 24/7 is what you want, as it's cheaper than ultrastar. Is 3 year warranty drive with half the mbtf of the ultrastar.
I noticed that western digital had a recent hdd range refresh, where they added 4-6tb hdd capacities, and also has more hdd flash storage embedded to the drive compared to the hgst. but whether it is as reliable as hgst i am not sure.... not much data on these new drives. However i did noticed that even on the desktop models, they have a 5 year warranty which is good
One year ago I found a local dealer for HGST in Kuching and was able to order 2x 4TB drives for my NAS. I just dropped by their shop last week and was told they no longer deal with Desktop drives from HGST (only laptop). They get their stock from KL though. I think there might still be HGST dealers in KL, but it's damn hard to find. I called the HGST office in Kuching and was told they send their drives to China to sell. I'm going to be pounding their phone with calls until I get an answer I like. Maybe I can even sign up as a dealer... i noticed amazon prices were too expensive when you added in shipping costs. but for ebay it was quite reasonable, and with shipping included, the price for the drive was cheaper than buying the drive locally. if buy local they also order from overseas, but difference is they add more to the cost for their own profit margins for doing so.
