TV Connect using network from the router. If your TV don't have, get a media player with network.

Hi all,

I would like to get an NAS, just for downloading videos and playing then through TV. So I guess my setup would be connecting my router to both the NAS and TV via LAN cable right?

I'm currently looking at Synology DS216play, DS215+, DS216+, and DS415+. Originally I thought of getting the DS415+, but now that I think of it, I don't need 4 bays, 2 bays is enough for me.

Also, DS415+ has much better processor which attracts me, because I'm afraid that I won't have enough power playing 1080p videos.

So what is good enough for me to just play 1080p videos? Are any of the 2 bays good enough? Please recommend.

Thanks!

Try to take a look at Asustor offerings.
AS3102T should be good too. Intel celeron processor. Also cheaper than Synology.

Any of this NAS is capable to play.

2bay, 4bay or 8bay doesn't effect the speed. It is a capacity. But remind you that 2bay is small for keeping 1080p file. Unless you keep delete it out after play.

LAN offer faster speed and stable stream. LAN cable is better.

But you have to check your tv able to decode the format.

Thanks for all the replies smile.gif

Currently I'm using a Samsung TV, and I've been playing movies from my external HDD via USB cable without any issues.

If I'm gonna get a NAS, I thought of using Plex, and I've been hearing things about the need to be able to do transcoding, so I'm afraid that the NAS isn't powerful enough. Apparently transcoding is also needed to burn subtitles to the movie..

As for the capacity, I'll probably rethink again, but I think 6TB is good enough for me (yes..I will delete movies which I think are no longer worthy to keep laugh.gif)

Yes, plex is available in synology. It is an add on app.

If you can just delete the old movie, 1tb also enough. And 2bay.

So..as I was saying, if I use Plex, do I need to worry about transcoding? Do I need to choose a NAS with better processor?

Don't waste your time using NAS to do transcoding especially for iOS device. Unless they are at least i3 processors which probably can only handle a couple of high bit rate transcoding which defeats the purpose when you have several devices that requires transcoding. Use synology as a network share and get a decent at least i5 box to handle the transcoding.

I'm actually wondering if I need transcoding in the first place. I know that if I play the videos on mobile device, then I will need transcoding, but apparently even if I'm playing on TV I still need transcoding to burn the subs to the video sad.gif

It would be a disappointment if I spent a lot on NAS..but in the end get laggy videos laugh.gif

Just use the DS video app for mobile device.

Depend on your network speed. I stream from 8mb to my iOS at home. No laggy. Available subtitle to choose.

Actually depends on your content ie file container (mkv, avi, MP4). I too have Plex app on my Sammy and it works via direct play with soft subs (no encoding required). The main point here is your requirements. Plex is a great media library organizer and also fantastic to share content over the Internet. If your media is purely for your own consumption to your setup as per your post then running Plex on the entry level NAS should be sufficient. DS video on the Synology is a far cry from Plex. But when your needs changes just get a dedicated box and move your library to it.

If you find out your love for Plex like me do support them it's really worthwhile getting Plexpass for tons of early access to features and local syncs to your devices. The Plex community is awesome.

if you want to setup a php , mysql , etc , you should build a custom NAS , freeNAS operating system is a good choice , base on freeBSD , you should able to host a webserver or database easilly .

Dlink DNS-345, should be less than RM1k.
