You can refer HERE to see the impact of RAID setup of various hard disk combination.

Thanks vivre. But I created a volume per disk (basic setup).

Hmm.. that's about 30GB lost, right? Do you have any idea where that 30GB might be?

There has been a big security advisory on Linux Bash vulnerability known as 'Shellshock' released recently. If you are running off the shelf NAS, be sure to check the principle's security advisory on how to patch the vulnerability.

Just setup as SMB share and every single OS in the world can access.
Almost every OS (iOS and Android included) can access SMB with a little help from apps, so no worries about the way it's shared. wink.gif

Which File system to invest in?

I am thinking of building a 3 bay NAS (if there's such system). Cost is a problem to me now.

Thinking to start with 2 HDD running raid-1 ( currently I have only roughly 600GB of data that need to be backup).

I am worry about speed of NAS as I would be putting my photos on it, during editing I think it would be rather slow since theoretically gigabit connection would be quite limiting compare to a local drive?

File system? Investment? sweat.gif
If you're going for pre-built NAS such as Synology then by all means don't worry about those File system, just choose the mode for your hard disk and you're good to go, once you turn on for first setup, it will prompt you for all the types of redundancy (RAID), just choose one base on your requirement and you're good to go, basically the NAS will prepare everything for you, you won't need to know what they do.

But if you insist, Synology has its own redundancy setup, different from the normal RAID you finds on servers' RAID card.
As for File system, Synology firmware is based on Linux so Ext3? or Ext4 or something similar, and it only works with that Linux File system for your info, pre-formatted with Windows File system such as NTFS, FAT32, etc. won't be able to works with Synology NAS.

I got a Synology NAS and never regret it, it is so simple to use and setup is quick.

Their support is awesome and can even remote to your NAS to perform emergency repair if ever required

You can get a NAS with dual LAN if you want.

Latest Synology Firmware are using Ext4 and you can use Windows File System for the external drive like docking for the USB.

Oh, perhaps I wasn't detail enough, basically you can do it using USB, read only I think, saw some discussion about this last time, and you can't plug-in a NTFS drive into the NAS just like that, won't work on the fly.

I am using the DS214 now which is great.

It doesn't matter the filesystem since you access it through SMB or Windows File Service.

The advantage of DS214play is the media transcoding feature.
Read more about it here

If you don't need media transcording, DS214+ if a better choice since both of them having the same price.

FYI, is NOT Read Only, you can transfer file. Like my setup, I have 1 2 bay docking on 1 usb port. Format to FAT32 and you can transfer file between the Synology and Docking HDD, and also can remove drive to plugin to Windows machine to transfer file.

Yup, NTFS will not work with Synology and the weakness of the FAT32 is the only can transfer not more than 4GB. This setup is like secondary backup of files, photos, music and small video files.

Thanks, I am much inclined towards DS either 2 or 4 bays with a +
Dual LAN seems great, I like the option to have a direct E-sata to my computer (not sure if that would actually be faster).

Any idea what can I do with those USB ports? can I plugin printer to be share over network as well?
The more I read, i realise it is a more than enough capable device it is

I don't think there's any with eSATA interface.

As for the USB, you can connect a wireless adapter, bluetooth adapter, USB printer sharing and external HDD for backup.

DSM OS is powerful and simple to setup, DSM 5.1 releasing soon.
