The problem with such NAS is, how reliable is it.

What happen when it spoil? Can the data be transfer able to another NAS?

Here experience when my 4bay NAS spoil. Probably strike by lightning on the LAN port.

I can't communicate with the NAS. Nor able to transfer the file or backup at all. Cause everything have to go through the LAN port. And the NAS only have 1 LAN port.

Luckily it is a Synology NAS. From their forum answer, I can get a new Synology NAS and just swap the hdd in. Run the new NAS OS and repair the data back.

That save me alot of time and safe the data too. sweat.gif

Such experience teach me,
1) not to buy a NAS with just 1 LAN port.
2) Get a brand that long been in NAS industries.
3) With a good OS like such transfer able HDD or data hassle free.
4) Minimum 4bay or more

Hi guys,

I just wonder where I could buy the Synology Extended Warranty pack for my newly bought DS ya? Unfortunately, the shop where I purchased it from, ran out of the pack earlier, and I thought I could purchase it directly from Synology site, and apparently I couldn't. I haven't activated the NAS yet though.

Thanks guys!

If back 13yrs ago have a convenient today, I won't start a NAS.

After calculate the cost and maintain it.

After start having it, hard to turn back.

So prepare the cost for up keeping. It is not like buy and forget, let it run for the rest of the life.

I started out with a nice 4-bay Qnap in 2012 but no longer use it.

In the end for me I made a tiering system. Irreplaceable scans/photos/videos are on the NAS (FreeNAS ~4TB usable, total spent maybe RM500?) backed up to OneDrive
Anything else that's downloaded can be deleted after watching

How is the exos perform?

I want to use exos since it is cheaper.

But worry about mix run/use with ironwolf.

I read in Synology recommend that running exos need to off the hibernate.

I already run 2 ironwolf. Get another 2 to expand and standby to replace WD red. Which almost pass the lifetime.

How long you use your WD Red already ?

I run array of 8 set for 6 years 24/7, solid performance no issue. Satisfied. Attached with another backup system so I'll keep this running and still using for other use.
