Sometime back, I had the same problem. I thought that my cheap folding pedal gave way. But after I installed a new pair of the same cheap brand folding pedals, some sound can be heard. I decided to install my old stock unfolding pair. Haha.. Got sound. The problem was not the pedal. My close examine found that the lock ring of the bottom bracket became loose. How come? 3 monh old branded bike. Must QC problem. Later sent my bike to the dealer to tighthen the bracket...

Some MTB bikers prefer not to use the rear derailleur guards/protectors because when it hits the rock, the force may rip out the whole bike dropout. It would be costly to replace the frame.

You can buy a used protector. Spray with black paint and it will become new. Once I saw about 15 pieces of used protectors in the toolbox in a bicycle shop. I believe that after servicing those used Japanese bicycles, they prefer not to install them back. No need those guards for city or taman riding....

May be you should consider new 2014 Tern Eclipse S18 (USD 2,100 or RM6,800). Start saving now... Hahaha
