Both Tern and Dahon uses the Neos RD which is not really performing well. All models except MU P27 needs an RD adapter to change the RD and all uses the gripshift system and Dahon's shifter is especially bad quality! Looks cheap too.

Dahon

Visc P18 - RM2399  For a Dahon, it's a bargain for an 18 speed unit. This model and color, either you like it or you don't. I usually see ladies riding it, hehehe biggrin.gif

Dash P18 - RM2499 This is a fast bike as it is a mini velo. Drawback is the blardy rims which is 21 point something inch which makes tire choice very limited. So far only CST and Kenda slicks. Can't find treaded tires! Also
                             weird orange rims
rclxub.gif

Mu P27 - RM2599  This has a good frame but has rear internal gear which makes it hard to change tubes when punctured! 27 speed although unlike conventional gearing like the Visc P18. When Dahon wants to
shod more gears they usually use internal 3 speed hub gears in addition to the conventional 8 speed or 9 speed RD. That's because those days, the Neos don't have the longer caged RDs. If you look carefully
the Visc and Dash Neos RD have longer cage to accomodate the chain slack when gear is set to the small crank. Their rational for smaller RD is compactness and also non obtrusive when folded. That's
why they place the RD on the chain stay. I have tried the shorter Neos but the cage can't accomodate the chain and since we can't really buy the longer version, might as well change to a better quality RD
with the use of an adapter. Then we can use all the Shimano's and SRAM's range of RDs.

NEW Vigor P9 - RM2399 This is the latest Dahon 2014 series and within the same price range, the drawback is the 9 speed but off course if you need more gears, you can add dual cranks later or like myself
mod it to P20 using the original SRAM X5 components like the Dahon Vector P20. It will cost more dough though! Another extra RM600 to RM700. It does come with better and lighter rims than the
rest though. Although priced lower and named differently than the Vector (which is the highest range from Dahon), they are the same frame If you are a serious cyclist, it's worth it.

Tern

Link P9 - RM2800 This is a popular model but slightly higher priced for the same specs. Lots of complaints though but very minor issues like creaking handle post, chain jumps and sliding seat post. These are the 3 main complaints.

PS/ Something to add, if you so chooses the Tern, I suggest you go for the available Tern Link P24 which is heavily discounted. I don't know if it is still available but I saw the unit selling for RM2500 in Rodalink Botanic Gdn, Klang. 24 speed worr (also 3 speed internal hub gear like the Daho MUp27) and also Tern worr, the supposedly better bike and hence priced higher but till today only 2 basic models!  rclxub.gif THe P24 is the first batch and has better WTB rims than the later Tern rims which are inferior.

I bought my tern link p9 for rm2300 after 500 discount at vans wangsa maju. Try to contact them if they still have stock.

The creaking handlepost is curable by applying a dab of grease at the joint. The chain drop happened to my p9, but after i bashed the chainguard with rubber hammer, seems like its no longer there. Whereas for the sliding seatpost, havent experienced it.

Whatever bike you choose, make sure you enjoy it. Hehe. P9's component are quite good too. Very satisfied.

Congrats on your purchase. If you want to stick to single chainring, I suggest you look for a more sturdier bash guard. Something from Lite Pro should be good. You can try looking for 55T or 56T chain ring and just change it. The X7 modding to 10 speed will probably cost RM800 and the X9 RM1000 (approx. figures) but off course it will be much cheaper if you mixed the usage. Mainly there's 4 components that needs to be change. The 10 sp cassette, the chain, the RD and the shifters.

That kind of price is something that should be expected from good components. It will be nice to see the link p9 upgraded to x10 specs or even better, than have the frame resprayed.

But since the improvement of the 10 speeds is almost insignificant to the already 9 speeds, maybe i'll just wait till the neos rd worn out eventhough the neos is not as smooth. And need tu kumpul duit lah. Haha

Thanks for the reply

I think for a foldie, although it is good if we can put in top notch drive train components but it's not that critical as mountain bikes or road bikes. When you are in a race, gear shifts have to be precise and crisp but as for recreational foldies, as long as it doesn't break or rattle or jam, it should be fine. If you see expensive Birdy, they shod the 6K bike with only Shimano Alivio. rclxub.gif But it functions perfectly. The problem with P9s Neos RD is the cage is really short and when you hit down to the highest 2 gears, ie. the 2 smallest, the RD springs are so sprung up that when you change gear, it releases the spring and the release of the spring flings the cage and in tandem the chain so strong that it flips out! The Dahon Dash and Visc has longer caged Neos. I wonder why they don't just use that? They only give that when there's multiple chainrings.

I have modded my Dahon Vigor to SRAM X5s and it cost me about RM600 and the rear shifting is good and acceptable although not as smooth as my other 2 Dahons which uses the classic old Shimano LX. Maybe it's OK if you don't ride much hilly areas but myself, I do a lot of Genting Perez and Sempah. Also I used to ride Fraser's Hill so gears are important to me. As long as it changes, it's fine. Even the Shimano Acera is better than the Neos.

Maybe they wanted it to be as compact ad possible. I quite like the compactness but for the expense of smoothness. So thats why the chain jumped out from the chainring? In the lowest gear, it feels like the chain is rubbing on something, i think maybe the guide wheel from the neos rd contacted with the cassette (i dont know the real terms. Haha)

And yeah, changing gears while climbing hill is not that good.( i meant with the neos rd)
