Hi guys,

I am planning to get myself my first Mac.....

i get about 6-8%% discount from Apple Malaysia coz my dad has some business with them.... thumbup.gif whistling.gif

anyway, i plan to get a MacBook...the cheapest one...without superdrive.....

any idea if i can upgrade it to a Superdrive?

will it be cheaper compared to the 2.0ghz one???

My main purpose for this is just to learn how to use it, watch movies, listening to mp3, some word processing and also internet surfing.....will 512mb ram be sufficient??

and u are planning to get the 1.83GHz i suppose?
*clears throat,i think u can get the Drive upgraded no problem.512 ram?its up to u.I personally think its enough unless u are doing boot camp and planning to play games on it then i suppose u should upgrade to 1GB.Other than that.Have fun with your new mac later on smile.gif

I am not sure about trading in

512MB is fine for you. If you ask me , OSX would be somewhat happy since you're doing light work...As for SuperDrive option , I am not too sure

Yes, I think it's the same RAM and should be compatible as long as your PC's motherboard is.

I'm also thinking of getting my first Mac, but at those prices I can't help but think that instead of the overheating Macbook, I could get so much more for the same amount in an iMac. Even if it isn't portable.

You can opt to get yourself an external DVD burner (much cheaper than getting a slot loading superdrive) instead of the Superdrive... you need to ask yourself... do you forsee yourself burning a lot of DVDs while on the go? Besides, an external DVD burner (plug it using Firewire) burns super fast.

The 512MB that comes with the MacBook should be a single stick (unlike Dells which give you two sticks of 256MB to make up 512MB). You can opt to get yourself a stick of 1GB sometime down the road when DDR2 667mhz so-dimms are more affordable, making your machine's RAM 1.5GB. You don't really need to upgrade now because you're only using the Macbook for basic stuff.

I thought it was a double stick on an MB. blink.gif blink.gif

The reason, Apple implied that dual channel gives an advantage of maximising throughput especially when it comes to sharing memory with video....

Hmmm, I don't know any Mac app that uses up to 2GB RAM, but if you're gonna use boot camp and dual boot with XP, then go for 2GB if you're going to run FEAR or other heavy games on it.

I'm not sure about Macbooks, but most laptops use 144pin DIMMs, not 168pin, so you need to check carefully before buying extra RAM in the future.

As for superdrive, I dunno, maybe can maybe cannot. Check with Apple. But what azxel said is correct. If you buy no superdrive now, next time can add in a firewire superdrive (or if you're feeling cheap, a superdrive fitted in a firewire case).

i dont think you can upgrade to superdrive (for custom-to-order unit)

but again... use external writers ... better and cheaper option..

oh.. I'm not too sure if it's a single stick or double stick... maybe wait till it arrives on our shores to check 'em out.

My External DVD writer came with a white casing and is a pretty match if put together with an iBook or Macbook.

According to http://www.apple.com/macbook/specs.html

512MB of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-5300) on two SO-DIMMs, supports up to 2GB

is the black one worth it with the extra $$$??

i mean 20gb is nothing by today's standards, but matt black is freaking cool......when u take it to starbucks, imagine the attention u get.....

the white one is sleek as well.....and cheaper too...

since i have made an agreement with my fren in singapore, he told me to deposit RM6000 for everything including cost of courier. so to me if he makes his money go ahead, no worries coz at the end of it, he takes any currency fluctation risk. if not mistaken currently the rates to singapore is like 2.30 now when i order with him then, it was like 2.23 or 2.22 or something like that.

so macbook is around SG$2,588 (includes free upgrade to 1gb)
courier got no idea, he will kowtim including the insurance.

hope this help...

bulk ACPP from me or from singapore??

To everyone....i've asked my source and they said i can buy more than one item at discounted prices....with the condition of paying the items by cash/cheque...no credits......

but the thing is, we are dealing with thousands of ringgit here...if i were to release the prices that i am getting for EVERY APPLE PRODUCT (yeah, including ipods, iMacs, MBP, MB, Mini, ACD, even the xServe lines)....i believe it'll go up to at least a RM50K bulk shocking.gif sweat.gif (Eg. i can get the 23" ACD for less than RM5k...it's retailing at RM5499...so u do the math...hehe).....i am not a safe trader and to be frank....i dont really wanna take the risk....

Risk as in if i lose the money that you guys pay me, AND also the FFK ppl.....

i have agreed to help a forummer(famous for all his devices..hehe...*hint* hint whistling.gif ) buy 1 unit of the MacBook Black at discounted price....he approached me 1st.....so he lucky lah...hehehe..... thumbup.gif i have yet to call him yet, if he is not interested in it anymore(which i doubt so), i'll post it up here...

hope u guys understand my situation......really sorry i cant do bulk, although i am aloowed to...... thumbup.gif

No educational discount in Malaysia, period. The fastest and nearest education price is in Singapore, provided you have "pakat" to make the purchase in Singapore and shipped to a Singapore address.

Looking at people receiving their pre-ordered MacBook, the first batch of stock to this region is pretty much gone, so yeah pre-order your MacBook *should* secure one on next stock shipment, that's all you get from pre-order, unless individual reseller puts up special offer for pre-orders.
