We should blame the SKMM for this. They are the one who allow assteruk to simply set their prices instead of coughing up the money so that World Cup is aired on all channels. Assteruk is simply using their monopoly powers given by their buddies at the SKMM to squash the competition.

In fact, the fact that assteruk has the power to tell the competition to block a national channel is just wrong. If a show is aired on national channel it should be considered to be "donated to the rakyat" and every provider should have the rights to air it regardless.

That said, I'm not sad that HyppTV doesn't have the World Cup (I'm not a kaki bola). What I'm sad is that the SKMM is helping assteruk to pull off bullying stunts like this and get away with it. I'm also sad that everyone is blaming HyppTV instead of the real culprits- SKMM and assteruk.

well, TM is no saint either, all of them are cronies under BN

govt has awarded the nation's fiber infra to TM, and Maxis (sibling of Astro) has to rent the infra from TM, not to mention the border internet exchange which is monopolized by TM, so yeah, TM is making money from Maxis' customers as well

given the fact that Khazanah has significant stakes in both TM and Astro, the real beneficiary are nobody but BN cronies, especially those in EPU

the losers will always be the rakyat

from youth consumers POV however, no Astro still can survive, but no internet sure die, hence ISP is perceived as having higher priority than DTV operator, you still can stream from RTM web or various online streaming providers, Astro panicked out and partnered with Maxis to roll out Astro over IPTV.

Some unrelated side story, actually the original plan was that Maxis to roll out their own IPTV without Astro contents (or just relay a few of inhouse Astro channels), Maxis initial plan was to focus more on VOD/PPV centric IPTV with contents of their choice. However, things got changed probably when the big guys in Astro panicked and intervened Maxis' decision, they used some of their influences to prevent Maxis from competing with them in paytv business, they want to be part of the party... and the rest is history -- Maxis carrying the 3P service, with one of the P are "courtesy" from Astro.

There was at least a team based in KL Sentral were dissolved and the staffs were transferred to various other departments due to this.

refer back to my side story above, actually Maxis could have been as our 2nd major IPTV provider, offering contents which isn't seen in Astro, complementing the gap in Astro, and not directly competing with them.

Unfortunately, Astro still did not want this to happen

hence, what can you expect from a company which can treat its sibling company that way?

all in all, there's only 2 years left in Astro's monopoly, and now is no longer Mahathir's era, let's see how AK can play well with Najib administration eh

sorry for appearing off topic, just that suddenly was very raged by what Astro did, and feel sympathy with TM and Maxis

more to read: some old news, darn hard to search also

Malaysian gomen, specifically Mahathir's gomen's SKMM, granted Assteruk special monopoly rights back in 1996 which will persist until 2016. The rights had been abused, combined with Assteruk's deceptive tactics, to singlehandedly kill MegaTV and MiTV in the past (although it can be argued that MegaTV themselves are too slow to expand), and is currently being used to strangle Vincent Tan's JV with RedTone (eTV), ABN and HyppTV so they cannot grow fast enough.
Lag is one thing, but now RTM changed their site to use flash based streaming service. This will be a PITA to those wanting to see full screen and not in a small box on a webpage.
That is a good idea. Write in to HyppTV and suggest this?

Although my believe still stays. RTM belongs to the rakyat, it runs on our tax money. Anything shown on it should be allowed onto all other platforms in Malaysia, paid or not. Because we the rakyat paid for it.

it's simple, I dare say, Astro's honeypot are coming from chinese subscribers, the Superpack 3 is the most expensive one, besides charging premium price for latest TVB dramas which can be seen on WLT 9-12 months later. My colleague also jokingly refer Astro as something meant for maids to watch only, which is true in some way... as chinese working class are out to work, leaving the old folks/kids/maids at home, end up the maids could be enjoying Astro while their employers work their asses off to pay the monthly fee laugh.gif

unfortunately that HKTV was not granted a license, hence TVB continues to dominate the cantonese market, indirectly this helps Astro in their business as well.

recently get to watch HyppTV quality at friend's home, the quality on SD really is crystal clear, quality approaching DVD9, surpassing even Astro's own in house channels shocking.gif

They also bottled the online streaming feeds so even those using XBMC or hand phones and tablets cannot watch. Not sure if eTV and ABN also temporary lost their RTM feed...

Also, why satellite signal when Singaporeans could just use a boosted antenna to get RTM from JB?

how come, even AOTG for World cup is available for streaming

RTM web admin can actually just limit the streaming available to those from Malaysian IP only

too lazy to do it huh

what are the major differences between HyppTV on Unifi and 4Mbps Streamyx, aside from picture quality?

does the IPTV eat off partial of that 4Mbps Streamyx bandwidth? because AFAIK, it's not possible to have dedicated video VLAN on Streamyx
