5.5 inch and above display size phones is a niche market . It will never be a common hit among the masses.

I still remember the first time I got myself the 5 inch Dell Streak ( specially imported in from UK through a forumer here)  - the number of stares I got in the kopitiam/cofeehouse/warong  at my place was uncountable. On several occasions , some curious chaps even came over and asked me what gigantic phone was that !!
Than Samsung launched Note - and in this forum , a lot of bad comments that it was freaking big, unsuitable as a phone and those using it were even called freaks !!! Well, history had proven those critics wrong and thereafter we have seen Note 2 and a rise of phablets by other manufacturers
It had now reach a stage that 5 inch  display size phones are considered normal already
But still till today, we had guys debating on the size of this phone as to its suitability for use. I'd say only time will tell whether 6 incher and above display size phones will succeed or fail. Sony I'd say had taken a big risk at 6.4 inch. A 6 inch size would be more acceptable
*
Good points there, but to be frank if the XZU was 5.5"-6", I would not even bother considering it. But they released such a phablet at such outstanding thinness with a terrific display, it's surely a worthy buy in my opinion and probably others would think so as well. The current size of XZU is just a tad shy from 7" tablets. It truly is the in-betweener, so to speak. Of course, most people that buy it now just want the FASTEST thing on the market now - the ultimate Snapdragon 800. brows.gif

The anti shatter film is said to be scratchable but I am indeed very impressed with it. I was daily using a ballpen with it extensively replacing my finger ( tapping launching app, writing using keyboard, scrolling in browser and moving among homescreens/app drawers etc) and in past 14 days I have yet to see even a single hairline scratch
I just put on a Niilkin SP only yesterday
But I do read at least 2 users here who had reported scratches even on first few days usage !!!
*
Mind telling if the additional SP you just put on will affect the screen sensitivity including causing double-tapping issues, etc. as mentioned by forumers before. TQ.

No such issues at all except only now with ballpen, scrolling is less smooth and less sensitive to touch
*
Thanks for the clarification, Uncle. Gave me confidence to place additional SP on mine also. Safer that way to protect the anti-shatter sheet. biggrin.gif

Just got my XZU DK30 dock today. biggrin.gif

user posted image

Short review:-
- Used with my Capdase 2.1A car charger and it seems to charge just as fast as using direct USB cable.
- Is a bit on the light side. Would prefer more weight, but light is good for portability!
- The magnetic strength is quite good. Just enough to ensure steady link from XZU to the dock, and you can easily detach the XZU from the dock. However, I personally would prefer a much stronger magnet like what is used in my MacBook Pro Retina's charge-port so the XZU can easily latch-on without even looking at the dock.
- If you are using the bundled flip-case, you may need to DIY the case to break an opening at the magnetic charging port of the XZU and use the bundled dock adapter for XZU covers. I haven't really looked further into this but in the future, maybe.
- The USB cable is not detachable from the DK30, but the quality is quite acceptable. Of course, I would prefer detachable cable like when I was using Nexus 4 Wireless Orb Charger.
- The DK30 has a flat base which you can put DIY some adhesive and stick it anywhere, including your car's dashboard!
- Last but not least, no need to open the USB flap anymore!

anyway, nice overview. does the dock comes with the cable or just the dock only?

It comes with a cable which is unfortunately permanently fixed to the dock.

Might DIY some adhesive-thingy soon. Love my dock! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

More photos of my DK30 dock.

It looks very minimalist and compact. Suits my current taste now. rclxm9.gif

Testing the DK30's cover-adapter on the XZU flip case. Seems to have a good fit if the flip-case is DIY-cut accordingly, though doing such DIY may not guarantee the tight fit needed for the contacts to link to the XZU.

However, I believe there will be a REAL ORIGINAL XZU case coming out soon that is made perfectly for this dock adapter. smile.gif

Charging Cable with Magnetic Connector EC21

Indeed that's weird. The cable that came with my DK30 is permanently fixed to the dock. And my DK30 was brand new in sealed box from Sony Centre.

Perhaps Sony decided to change the final design or something, or they chose to purposely remove the separate connector so they can sell separately.

Which Sony Center did you get it from? i asked 2 Sony center(1 Utama & The Curve) yesterday, both say not in yet.

Got it from Sony Centre IOI. Best to call to check whichever centre you are going to check.

Yes, I saw that the cable is supposed to be included.

But check out this. I snapped this photo of the box of my DK30. Nowhere it mentioned that a separate cable is included. Maybe not for Malaysian version?

That Nilkin hardcase have a hole for the magnetic charger port, will that more fit?
*
Depends. Really must test cause the magnetic contacts are so flat and tiny. If there's any gap, it will not enable the charging link.

just updated the firmware. personally i feel that scrolling is much smoother now. previously the screen was so sensitive

That's good to know. Probably the UI speed has been optimized. But at the cost of heavier battery drain?

Yes you are right, I'm sporting the Black HSPA XZU now. But LTE is actually 'worth' the upgrade for me due to super-low ping. Oh well, just wait and see. Still got time to decide! Haha.

LOL. Nola, iPhone is still good. I'm still using it. IMHO, iPhone apps are higher quality than Android. Maybe it is something to do with the coding that Android needs to catch up in.

Uncle where did you get the cable from?
*
The cable is actually embedded within the dock. Props to uncle Benny for finding it out by prying his open. Kinda weird design by Sony but it's something that we all like - we can easily choose between using it as a dock or just magnetic cable alone. biggrin.gif

I spent 1-2 hours surfing daily and hardly receive any calls in a day. This phone really fit me well.

Z10 is a very good phone to me. I loved the OS when I was using it, but the lack of apps is a BIG problem for me. Also, Z10 battery life quite poor. The XZU will be best for you as a web-surfer's dream is a large screen! nod.gif

Finally, my XZU flip-case can 'dock' now!

Let me share with you guys how I did it.

Step 1: The key is removing a part of the left portion of the plastic side case. I used a very sharp blade (my Victorinox pictured here) to cut out the part. Make sure the length on the sides is longer than that of the DK30 dock so you don't have to cut again.
user posted image

Step 2: You can sand-paper or use a file to smoothen the rough edges of the area that was cut. Though I would say this is optional since the rough edges would not be very obvious once you have placed your XZU in.
user posted image

Step 3: You need to switch out the standard adapter in the DK30 dock with the included alternative adapter (which has a larger docking area) that is meant to be used with XZU covers. This is a photo of the DK30 with adapter removed. Note that you may need to place additional thick tape for better fitting on the adapter's inside if your XZU cover fits loosely.
user posted image

Step 4: Enjoy the convenience of this 'docking capability' while your XZU remains well-protected in it's flip-case!
user posted image

That's all for now. Hope those that are interested to do so as well would benefit from this! biggrin.gif

Thats the problem with after sales service in Malaysia. Even the big companies are horrible. I used to use Samsung mobiles, and at least their warranty claims and repairs are pretty fast. Few months ago I changed my SGS3 mainboard due to failed eMMC, and the turn around time was less than 24 hours. I sent it in during lunch hour on Monday, and got a call on Tuesday morning to pick it up. Same experience for me with Switch and Machines when my mum's iphone broke down. Took them only 3 days, and was given a replacement even.

But my experience with HTC (Brightstar) was really crap. Wait for spare parts for weeks, and then no follow up calls, no contact. Have to keep chasing them. And the same too with Sony in the past.
*
Nowadays I applaud Samsung in their customer service efforts, with more and more service centres being set up. I would say they are perhaps even on par with Apple's level now in terms of geographical service coverage.

QUOTE(DannyOP @ Aug 21 2013, 09:14 AM)
Unfortunately best service is still Samsung and that's where they grab more loyal customers.  I'm afraid to even send my phone to Sony if anything goes wrong then I will be without a phone.

Btw just upgraded the firmware to. 475 and the screen is much smoother to use as well as less problem with screen click errors. Scrolling also smoother. Battery life seems not affected but too early to tell.  Will post more feedbacks after a few days.
*
Thanks for the quick review of .475. Glad to know the screen click errors have been reduced. Perhaps will upgrade it today!

Even my current PC (few years ago) cannot proper playback, but it run seemlessly fine in MX Player.

Above video required MX Player as bundle Video app cannot playback probably due to codec not support.

Most people always look at the XZU and marvel at the screen, size and thinness.

But normally people fail to realize that there is a BEAST under the hood.

Nothing comes close to the XZU in terms of speed now as it is the ONLY phone with Snapdragon 800 that is launched in the market!

That timescapes video I only manage to play in my ex-tablet - Nexus 10, but not as smooth as I play in this Xperia Z Ultra.

It skip frame badly on Xperia Z and Tablet Z, and it actually consider not playable in my old Intel Centrino 2 with Nvidia Geforce G 105M laptop.

Put inside pocket or bag. If you pocket all small and too tide and no habit use bag, 1st hand you shall not buy XZU, won't be convenient.

Ever since putting my XZU in the flip-case, I normally carry it by hand. Too uncomfortable to keep inside my pockets. blush.gif

QUOTE(Hertz96 @ Aug 21 2013, 05:08 PM)
I was thinking the same. Cause when I talk to my friends on the phone for a long time, it's very uncomfortable cause XZU to big to put to the ear for a long time. I have a Galaxy S2 as small phone but plan to retire the old boy and get something new. Either I'll go get an Xperia Z or I'm also thinking of getting the Caterpillar B15 Tough Smartphone. Dual Core only but would be enough to tahan my usage as I want to only use the small phone for calls. Texting and WhatsApp I'm already comfortable with my Z Ultra.
*
My main phone now is back to iPhone 5. Totally agree with you that using the XZU as main phone (especially if you heavily call with it) is not practical, and I'm also afraid of the torsion-effect on the XZU if kept in the pocket when squatting down, etc.

benchmarks just a type of marketing strategy.. if the new chipset announced and benchmarks almost nearly same as previous, who will gonna buy the phone with new chipset..

only those craze for latest and wish to show off will do.. buy the phone that suits our need. as long as the phone can serve us well according to our budget and requirement. no need follow the trend.

people using S4 not necessary must follow them. for my case, everyone said im stupid to use sony, but i just smile to them. for my friends, i will give my opinion honestly. budget phone, go Sony. Expensive phone, depend on user preference.. if my friends like Samsung, will ask him go s4 or note2.

most of my closest friends are using sony ady. mostly in mid end phone, xperia V, P, S, SL, sola. others Z, ZL.

it seems like the DK-30 shd come with dock and extra magnetic usb cable as well. how come the one we bought here dont have it???

read abt it here -->    http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/06/27/sony-...-z-ultra-video/

"Another great feature of the DK30 dock is that it comes with two adapters allowing you to use it with or without a case."
*
This was discussed previously if you read back the posts.

New DK30 sets do not have the additional cable. The cable is embedded into the dock and can be removed to use as standalone cable.

Loving my DK30 now and can dock my XZU with it even without removing the case.
