I saw lots of bunting advertising ABNxcess Cable TV and Broadband and have pre-registered my interests in its website.

I would appreciate if anyone, who has subscribed, could comment or relate his/her experience on:
1] How long will the promotion price remain at RM98.99 (for 10 Mbps & TV) after installation?
2] How is the TV programs compared to Astro and HyppTV?
3] Any intermittent delays when viewing TV?
4] Whether its 10 Mbps broadband is stable and reliable? Any downtime so far?
5] What is the average speed recorded during speed-test?
6] Whether there will be landline or DECT Phone connectivity?
7] What is the range & speed of the built-in Wifi Router?
8] Any user email address provided?

Thank You.

Is your area covered or not?
You might have filled in the form to be informed when your area is available and not the registration form.
But so far not many areas is covered.
Just use UniFi, fast and stable

Have to be patient, I guess. I think they cannot cope with the number of registrants.
I filled in my registration on the website in early June, received a robotic reply almost immediately, then nothing......
Went to their kedai in USJ Taipan in early July, and reregistered. Deafening silence after that.
Suddenly on Wednesday, got a call...will be coming to install on Saturday (tomorrow). All in all, nearly 2 months' wait. But at least they're not dead in the water.

Great. What are you subscribing, TV + Internet or just TV? Where is your house location?

Please post how you find the service and internet speed after installation. Thanks.

Thanks for the information. Any explanation from the installer why the TV is not working? Any indication when the modem will be installed?

From their website, I can make out the model number of the Set Top Box provided is HMC3000. What is the model of the Cable Modem provided? Is it SBG901 or SBG941 from Arris Motorola?

Just to inform that sometime after my posting on Tuesday morning, I found that my cable tv service had been activated, and I now have access to ALL the ABNXCESS channels, not just the 50 in the offer package. Maybe, someone from ABN is watching this thread and hurriedly doing some PR damage control? brows.gif

I have not yet received the internet service, so do not know what modem will be provided.

Thanks for the information.

According to their brochure, subscribers can view all the channels for free for the 1st month. Would appreciate if you could advise whether there is any lag or disconnect in transmission during a heavy rainstorm (like Astro).

I am still awaiting installation at USJ areas after signing up in early August.

Any Sifus can comment on the equipment provided by ABNxcess?
1] Arris Motorola HD Set-Box HMC3000, and
2] Arris Motorola 'Surfboard' Cable Modem SVG1202

Are Maxis and TMnet providing similar standard (or better) equipment? Thank You.

Sorry, I still haven't got the internet service yet. Chit chat with the ABN staff seems to indicate it will be end August - mid September before they're ready to connect customers in Subang Jaya to the internet. Apparently still doing testing lah. shakehead.gif

I'm as eager as everybody, but it looks like there's a bit more waiting to do.

Price may look cheap, but still, its better to wait for others to become guinea pigs and hear out their reviews before you jump into it.

Possible to get cable TV via copper cable? I wonder how about the fibre internet. Copper cable certainly can’t take speeds above 5Mbps. By the way, how is the experience so far? Planning to change and give it a try if it’s available in my area (Old Klang Road). The only reason why I’m subscribing to Astro is because they have exclusive rights for the EPL broadcast. Streaming isn’t really an option and quality is bad. Hmphhh.

I think they're using VDSL2 + FTX just like TM using to deliver Unifi to tall building/condo/apartment

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_high_spe...bscriber_line_2

QUOTE
Very-high-bit-rate digital subscriber line 2 (VDSL2) is an access technology that exploits the existing infrastructure of copper wires that were originally deployed for traditional telephone service as a way of delivering very high speed internet access. The main high-speed link (e.g. a fibre optic connection) terminates at a hub near the customers' location. The existing copper wire infrastructure is then used to carry the high speed connection for the short remaining distance to the customers. It can be deployed from central offices, from fiber-optic connected cabinets located near the customer premises, or within buildings. It has been defined in standard ITU-T G.993.2 finalized in 2005.

CODE
Fiber to the x (FTTX) is a generic term for any broadband network architecture using optical fiber to provide all or part of the local loop used for last mile telecommunications. The term is a generalization for several configurations of fiber deployment, ranging from FTTN (fiber to the neighborhood) to FTTD (fiber to the desktop).

Depends on what type of copper connection.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InfiniBand
infiniband is using copper as well
just the 3meter copper cable already cost you USD300 (cisco)

the speed can up to 300gb
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_device_bandwidths

Currently, the most commonly use is Mellanox product. 40gb speed.
http://www.mellanox.com/page/products_dyn?...g=cables_copper

the cable can carry speed up to 56gb speed

HFC(hybrid fiber-coaxial) is fiber optic internet.

The only difference is that the fiber optic is terminated on the pole outside your premise and the last end of wire being copper coaxial.

The headend eMTA(the big heavy metal box with fins) is hung on the fiber cable on the pole outside your house which converts optical signals into electrical signals for the coax cable. Some paranoid people think it emits radiation that can fry brains but actually is is made with hardened metal to withstand weather and fins for heat dissipation(passive cooling).

Something like this:

user posted image

This one is a wireless hotspot (AP) for Wi-Fi access:

user posted image

Inside the box you have an ONU same like your FTTH connection except the fiber is not pulled into your house but converted into TV coax wire.

Thailand has many of these fiber modems hung on their cables everywhere.

Their customer site installation is cheaper because they just have to pull coax cables(similar to the TV wires from your ASTRO outdoor dishes) from the overhead poles into your house.

Setting up public hotspots are also easy and they can tap the fiber optic cable anywhere to give cheap Wi-Fi access to surrounding premises.

If ABN uses DOCSIS 3.0 multichannel bonding for their CATV modem, for sure it'll give UniFi a run for its money.

Can go upto 120mbps with upload speeds exceeding 10mbps.

All just change headend and subscriber modem. Fiber cables all can retain.

Been using ABN for a week now. Works pretty well, no complain so far. I'm on the RM99/month package (10Mbps / 50 channels).

user posted image

To reply some of your questions:

#1 I believe this promotion price last for as long as you're subscribed. No mention of a limit period in the terms and conditions. Futhermore, you can get an extra RM200 discount if you switch from another broadband provider to ABN (RM20 off every bill for the next 10 month) * I didn't bother to claim that myself, but the flyer and sales guy told me I was eligible.

#2 Never had Astro nor HyppTV, but the TV channels are somewhat average. TV is not important to me anyway.

#3 Didn't notice anything.

#4 Stable and no downtime so far (been using it for 1 week).

#5 10Mbps down and 2Mbps up to the nearest Malaysian server. Speed will drop when connecting to overseas servers, obviously.

#6 No phone service.

#7 Wifi G spec only (54Mbps max). It's not N-spec, though the range is better than the N-spec wifi I used to have, so it's quite alright.

#8 Don't think so but the TV have an email option. I didn't investigate further.

One thing I don't like is their pre-registration that asks for your NRIC no. even before they can guarantee coverage expansion to your area.

Worst, their T&C clearly states they will reserve the right to utilize your personal data for marketing purposes by 3rd parties such as their agents, advisors and affiliates.

9. Personal Data

(a) Personal Data will be obtained from Subscriber at the time of subscription for the Services or as may be requested from Subscriber by ABN at any time thereafter or from existing Personal Data which had been collected by ABN previously.

(i) providing the Services;
(ii) marketing any products or services of ABN, its affiliates and/or ABN’s business partners, including any promotional campaigns;
(iii) complying with any statutory or legal obligations and any applicable laws, rules, regulations, codes orders and/or directions issued from time to time by any bureau, statutory and/or regulatory body;
(iv) credit checking or for credit monitoring or record by third party;
(v) to process your payment transaction;

They are asking for many private confidential details even before they can confirm their expansion, that makes them dubious or even take advantage of the situation for getting your contacts.

ABNxcess request coverage to Ipoh postcode areas:

31650 (Pasir Putih/Pinji)
31350 (Gunung Rapat)
30300 (Ipoh Central CBD)

The other suburbs already have UniFi so you will face fierce competition.
These postcodes already have UniFi in Ipoh:

31400 (Bercham/Tasek/Ipoh Garden)
30020 (Jelapang/First Garden)

You can send a few sales people to areas under these postcode:

31650 (Pasir Putih/Pinji/Pengkalan/Station 18)
31350 (Gunung Rapat)
30000 (Ipoh Old Town and CBD)
30450 (Greentown & Ipoh Parade)

I'll be very sure when you tell them the price RM99.90 for 10mbps people will be signing up your interests form until you won't have enough in hand to hand out. Many people still cannot even get 4M until now due to very old copper cabling in the city.

Trust me we have waited for UniFi since 2008 and no news until today. Don't waste your time going after UniFi areas like Bercham, Ipoh Gardens and Tasek. They already have too many options to choose from UniFi, Maxis Fibre and P1.Very tough competition.

Sure you will call me out for belanja kopi after this. Every cyber cafe, shop in town and even residence dying to see a new alternative after being stucked with 1-2mbps Streamyx for so many years.

Can someone share the devices installed by ABNxcess at your premise? Thank u.
*
2 motorola devices to be installed near your living hall TV
Coax cable laid from outside of your house to one of motorola devices and from this device connect to another motorola devices.
Same like Unifi that comes with one BTU and one router, except they dun provide voice (phone).

Thing I dun like:
The coax cable is damn ugly compare to the thin optical cable

Thing i like:
Motorola device run very cool, Motorla wifi signal is much stable than Unifi default router.

the fiber optic structure is until your house area, then they convert to coax RG6 cable to distribute the cable service into the neighbourhood. You'll see straight cable under the TNB wires. They're using HFC(Hybrid Fiber Technology).

How is the ping/latency like? Similar to Streamyx? The speedtest above show ping to ABN itself.. How about other server? Worried as they are on Satellite Network.

It's alright except that the internet keeps disconnecting over the past 3 days of usage after installation.

It went down for close to two hours today in USJ.

I can't work like this. To make things worse, I just terminated my unifi cry.gif

How long they takes from the day you subscribed till the day you have internet?
I have subscribed 1 month+ ago via some kind of roadshow booth, till now still no one contact me regarding the installation. I have called to the customer service, they said they can see my registered detail, and just wait for call for installation. They themselves can't confirm when and how soon they call for installation. USJ area here, should have under coverage right? How long i need to wait?

It's suffering without internet connection at home cry.gif , and I can't survive with my 2GB digi postpaid, can't even last me 1 week of tethering icon_question.gif icon_question.gif

Try to do a ping test. Mine keeps disconnecting and later I found out that everytime it disconnects, my IP changes.

This happens several times in an hour. I have attached the error message from the Motorola modem.

It has been a week since I've gotten it and there is not one day I can surf properly.

It's alright except that the internet keeps disconnecting over the past 3 days of usage after installation.

It went down for close to two hours today in USJ.

I can't work like this.  To make things worse, I just terminated my unifi  cry.gif
*
i'm facing the same situation like what you mention above. when come to night time the internet will disconnect themself and reconnect. i also cancel my unifi and pay the penalty of RM500 to unifi due to previos 5mbps and now 10 mbps. please be aware their download speed can go as close to 10mbps but the upload speed is only not even a 1mbps. in this situation i am having problem using ipad to do facetime.

i really want to complain this situation to the mcmc. but i dunno what is the process to complain.

actually youtube affects other ISP as well, unifi users also complaining, maybe google see less ads revenue (do your part and whitelising your adblock), so they didnt increase the server count and their bandwidth, meanwhile singapore youtube server still fast (when using vpn)

You are wrong ,my area(bandar sri damansara) have Streamyx ,UniFi and Maxis Fibre ,we still have ABN but less people using it,means traffic less congested.

I just launched a complain to have their services terminated. Their internet could perhaps be usable for casual surfers who doesn't mind the 5-10secs of internet interruptions every now and then.

You have the Email for MCMC? I'm going to write in mine at http://www.consumerinfo.my/

They did offer a Public IP upon request. But you'll need to pay abit; how much you gotta ask them.

But really, do check if you connectivity is stable first as you do not want to get disconnected halfway viewing your CCTV footage.

TV is stable no doubt except that the contents keep repeating themselves; except for news channels.

Are you able to login to your modem and capture the log files? I wanna find out if that error message I'm getting is common.

I want to share my experience using for almost 2 months now.. i also posted this in another thread..
how long does it take for u guys to get a stable internet connection from the moment you on the modem? I have to wait around 7 minutes to get a line, because the signal apparently would not lock. below is the problem i recorded on my modem. notice how 1 minutes it manage to lock the signal (which is normal), then a few seconds later it disconnect again, and it repeats itself until the 6th or 7th times only it stays permanent.

Yup ,you are right. According to this ,it shows that ABN only have 2 peers for their service ,one is NTT America, Inc. and of course,TM Net, Internet Service Provider .When a lot of users using internet to access ,they will face slow connections.

upgrade the bandwidth pipe first, after most current adopters happy, then your company can think about higher speed package or expanding coverage. The speed is just too bad during peak hours doh.gif The choice of cable (last mile) does not matter to us, its the bandwidth pipe (which you get from TM and NTT communication) that provide the actual network throughput are the main concern

ask your boss or the shareholders to read customers rant via forum thread below:

Do you know that the TM last mile is ready for 10-GPON tech, alot customer can be give 1000mbps package splitted from one single fiber core. Alot singapore ISP already provide 1000mbps package by using FTTH tech.

TM already have 100mbps package for SOHO user, they could do the same for consumer package, but they didnt provide it becuase they didnt have enough capacity to covers the users (especially with network leecher)
https://www.tm.com.my/Office/Business/SME/S...s/UniFibiz.aspx

dont ever promote package that provide higher speed bandwidth when the current 10mbps user are struggling

call 1300223399? lol, they only tell to change wifi channel if slow, my ticket were already redirect to the network support, and they admit the network load to ntt and tm peer were high (i believe same goes with myix as well), and they will increase the bandwidth pipe, but no time frame is given when they gonna add new aggregation link.

most of your customers? i guess you must be their sales representative in subang area

I managed to take a peek into the Motorola modem SBG901 and while playing around the settings, I found this.

While my SNR is pretty good for downloading, it looks like the DHCP system of ABN sorta slows it down with QoS and Traffic priority.

Check the spoiler for the settings. Notice that it's locked for the upstream/downstream service flow settings. If only there's a way to *unlock* it. whistling.gif

ABNXcess uses Carrier-grade NAT to distribute our IPs. Therefore DDNS is CONFIRMED UNABLE to use unless

(1) Subscribed to their IPv4 add-on packge, whereby we assign you one (1) static public IPv4 @ monthly fee of MYR 5.99
(2) Assign a dynamically IPv6 address (not fixed), no charges.

I've been wanting to subscribe to the ABN internet service but looking at all the rants in this page, I'm not convinced to make that decision anytime soon.

you need to pay penalty fee about RM500++ to ABN in order to terminate their service within the contract period.... usually tied to 24 months. sad.gif

Most likely the speed bandwidth had capped from 9pm till 8 am due to unable to delivered the huge usage demand for those with RM98.99 package. What's mean "No Throttling" mad.gif Probably networks infrastructure not ready yet but service already oversubscribed in certain areas. vmad.gif

Note: i had tested the speed test at my friend's house with his Unifi modem (VIP10 package), very stable most of the time... 10MBps download and 10MBps upload as well... rclxms.gif

Hi Ghirran,

Which department are you working in? Tell your management that new customers can find it hard to pay for internet service also. We'll pay bit by bit as too much commitment; over purchase.

Btw, ABN have not fixed the internet stability issues in my place at USJ after 2 months. I am unable to sustain a constant VPN connection to do my work and my request to have my line terminated was not responded to.

Check out the ping below while I was typing this:

ABN is using the TNB pole for all their cables (landed properties) ,not like Time or TM.

my advise dont appy ABN, its not worth it.. its worst ISP.. calling their hotline dont provide any solution to problem faced except increase your phone bill. my bill came to about RM30 for calls made to hotline..

as you know hotline 1300 xxxx are not part of mobile call plan. actually i was also using UNIFI happily for more then 2 years without problem until i received call from ABN on offer for free trial and with no contract & i fall for it and cancelled unifi thinking can save money and get more speed.
after 2 days with ABN then got no service for almost 5 days. i called them so many times and still no proper update. i lodge complaint with CFM. on same day after filling complaint CFM send email to ABN to attend to it and they resolved it.
yet still after 7pm speed slow, you cannot play youtube song with HD quality at all after 7pm. day time its super fast. further more i cannot use VPN for office remote support. they control with natting and dns IP. ABNxcess are for those who use net for basic surfing only.

Btw for those having issues on regardless any ISP and despite call/complaint if still not solved in satisfactory way, you should lodge complaint via CFM. this might also help on terminating contract without penalty i believe (no harm trying) if ISP not able to solve issue faced. it worked for me in getting ISP attention.

also to add ABNxcess now changed their Hotline contact till 9pm ONLY. after 9pm if you have any problem you have no support till next day morning. THIS IS VERY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE. any product you buy do tend to have issues that cannot be avoided but whether the COMPANY CARE for their CUSTOMER and give fast excellent service is what really matters and will make ppl trust and continue with that BRAND. they failed to understand that

yes I agree with you. at night speed drop till very bad. Its like I'm using back 1mbps, youtube at max can only play at 480p. anything above than that need to buffer. Download speed also drop till less than 5mbps. Morning the speed is full 10mbps but who the f**k uses internet when most of us are at office working. It is night time that we want our given speed as promise, or at least provide up 80% if not 100%.
By the way, to lodge a complain to CMF, we need to file report to ABN first right? A lot of us are planning to make a complain that ABN are not giving us the speed as promise during night time. Do you think it will work? They might give excuses its peak hours bla bla, congestion, etc.. *sigh*

have you called them on slow speed? or email to them and have replies from them without any solution?
From CFM website they said if after complain and giving time for ISP to solve problem they still failed to help customer we can lodge to CFM.
this the link to CFM site -->
http://www.consumerinfo.my/Contact-Us/complaint-redress.aspx

what i did was, after 5 days of calling so many times and email to ABN for no internet service and still no action from them - i sent email to CFM via --> aduan@cfm.org.my and i cc it to ABN (up to you if you want cc or not). i told them on issue i faced and on so many different answer given to me by ABN. after email within 30mins i got call from CFM Team to ask for my ABN acct number etc. then 1hr later i received reply mail from CFM that they have sent mail to ABN and that ABN must respond to me within 7days and if no response or not satisfied i can update CFM. CFM also provided a link to CFM website and a reference number where we can login with our IC number to check the update on our complaints. after ABN attended to it they updated CFM and i received another mail from CFM to give our update whether we are satisfied with solution given or not.

Below taken from ABN website that claims high speed internet and low contention. So if you not getting what they promise you have every right to lodge complain to see how it work out. my advise when you lodge complain with CFM be polite/with respect ask their help to solve what you face, dont use rough or f letter words for CFM mail wink.gif

I have not complain, reason why is im not sure if they will entertain if i tell them my torrent is slow like snail, plus they always only use local speedtest server to check and claim that indeed it can reach 10mbps. Would they layan if i told them my torrent can't reach full speed at night? Cause morning i can get full speed on the same torrent, its night that its slow so I'm sure it is not seed or peers issue, abn slow p2p on purpose unsure.gif

You can complaint on YouTube videos cant play in good resolutions at night, page loading on most website slower at night. Downloading of songs and or application very slow at night and maybe on windows or ios update slow etc. Maybe if more ppl complaints on similar things it will get their attention faster. Otherwise you can request CFM on possibilities of terminating without any penalties. Im pretty sure it can be done as you are not getting what they advertise. Try it as its not worth it to pay for something that doesn't provide good service.

This thing should be better than a streamyx 1mb rite ??? I hope no dc, because I am using it to play dota 2 every nite.

I just installed it at my house.

When the guy just installed, can use internet. After watching 2 hours of movie online, suddenly dc already.

The online light keep blinking. I straight call their helpdesk. They told me account status : in progress wor. So must wait 24 hours.

WTF man. I told them I was using it for 2 hours already no problem right after installation done. Suddenly DC..

NVM.. I wait lor..anyhow its 3 months free trial. If really sux, I gonna return them the modem and give them a super duper bad publicity in facebook.

Btw, their cable is so bulky and not very flexible to bend.

Surprisingly the speed when I first use is not that bad. Can hit almost 10mbps down, 2mbps up.

2mbps uplink is abit slow though. Wanna use dropbox also difficult. Good to watch movie only.

Hi I subscribed it a few months ago and terminated it in 29 days, i complaint like nobody business then they let me terminate without penalty.
Its the worst internet provider ever, they throttle it to 5mbps at night which for them is their policy. I mean some ISP will do that but no to an extent of not usable. What the point of paying when u cant even enjoy playing a game on it.
Problem is even at 5mbps it feels like you on GPRS.

never get full speed on night. I download torrent from yi*y that totally high seeder still slow downloading.
which morning u talk about, 12am to 6am or 7am till 11am ?
other thing I notice, when I listening to radio or watching TV (Trace Urban HD, i dont watch other useless channel)
internet speed slowing down, then i turn off set-top box and speed become normal.

I download from yify too, same like u if high seeders i can only get around 200kbps, but usually its only 100kbps. sigh doh.gif doh.gif
I meant morning 8am till afternoon, that is the only time my torrent can reach 1.1Mb/s, but its useless coz its office hours and we are in the office.
clearly at night ABN is throttle at lot. from 10mbps to 2mbps, that's 70% throttle!

Hi After install I tested it and straight complaint cause i cant play my game D3, I continue to complain like 2 or 3 times. When i receive the bill they over charge me cause monthly suppose to be RM 99.80 but my 1st month bill was like RM136. They only come install for me on 2nd of the month but it was not working cause they didnt open the port so for like 5 days its was not working. I tested it for a while and confirm they throttle at night and in the day i cant play my game too. I have maxis fiber and that why i know theirs damn slow compare to my maxis 10mbps.
I told them im the only person connected to cable to the router and turn off the wireless and i still can not play my game.
I go to the ABN centre in USJ twice to complaint and the last day i took everything and settle the bill and told them i cant accept the quality of their service and told them to cut it. Then just happen the branch manager was there and they agreed to terminate my account without penalty. I also told them im going to MCMC and tribunal court to make sure i complaint kaw kaw.
After they rebate i still need to pay RM112 for my first month bill, make no sense since i only use less than 30 days.

Hey guys, i'm a part of ABNX's 3 months trial.

But i'm moving to Mont Kiara and ABNX is not yet available there (funny since Mont Kiara is the best place to promote and sell fibre broadband in KL). And thus i have no choice but to cancel my ABNX subscription

Now, are trial users still have to pay for RM500 Penalty? Because if so, then i'd be very angry.

Because if so, then i'd be very angry.

trial should be free

Very inconvenient when terminating the 3 months trial package ... need to walk-in their office to return all devices on weekday before 7pm and weekend (Sat only) before 2pm.

News

http://www.theedgemarkets.com/my/article/a...unan-loan-poser

KUALA LUMPUR: Things are not going according to plan for Asian Broadcasting Network (M) Sdn Bhd (ABN) which two years ago during its launch had marketed itself as a serious challenger to Astro in the pay-TV sector.

Money woes despite a RM450 million loan from Bank Pembangunan (M) Bhd has seen the cable TV company which had billed itself as the country’s first digital cable network, delay salaries and payments to installers and service contractors, among others.

The company’s financial statements for financial year ended June 30, 2014 (FY14) were not available from searches with the Companies Commission of Malaysia indicating it had yet to file its statements.

However records filed for FY13 showed accumulated losses of RM36.2 million, including losses of RM30.7 million for the year.

Non-current and current assets stood at RM189.89 million and RM22.79 million, respectively compared with non-current and current liabilities of RM102 million and RM38.82 million.

Another factor that raised concerns is that ABN has posted zero revenue since FY09.

The question now is how is ABN going to repay the RM450 million loan from the government-owned Bank Pembangunan (held by the Minister of Finance Inc and the Federal Lands Commissioner) which was meant to help fund the company’s RM2 billion capital expenditure.

Company financial records show that the loan has yet to be serviced, as well as a RM15 million loan from Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) ( Financial Dashboard) taken in 2012.

Details of the loans are sketchy and Bank Pembangunan has invoked the Banking and Financial Institutions Act, 1989 (BAFIA) as well as the Financial Services Act 2013 in refusing to address media queries since the loan was approved in early 2013.

It is also learnt that the company has run afoul of the law by not making Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributions since late last year.

Several former staff who spoke to The Edge Financial Daily said they had filed complaints with EPF. They are also bracing themselves for notices from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) fearing tax deductions were also not submitted by the company.

It had also breached basic labour regulations by delaying salaries — with staff receiving their pay cheques way after the seventh day of every month since January.

Signs that things were coming to a head at the company were evident when it shut down its news division last Monday, taking ABN News off the air and its news portals off the Internet, as well as closing the studio unit which supports the news broadcasts. About 60 staff have also been let go.

Several employees who spoke to The Edge Financial Daily said they were given a month’s salary to enable them to leave immediately.

ABN president and chief executive officer Sreedhar Subramaniam has not responded to numerous queries directed to him as well as through the company’s communications executives.

Now it is learnt that senior communications executives have also been retrenched.

ABN’s digital cable TV service marketed as ABNxcess, which went live on June 8, 2013, had boasted of providing speeds of up to 300 Mbps through its hybrid fibre-coaxial technology for its internet service and broadcasts of over 500 channels.

It now has 52 channels, airing mostly programmes from the Indian subcontinent and China.

Customer reviews of the service have been mostly negative based on complaints to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and customer feedback sites. Among the main grouses are slow uptime and poor customer service.

Tycoon Tan Sri K K Eswaran is the largest shareholder of ABN through a 70% shareholding of ABN Media Group — ABN’s holding company.

The rest are owned by Admiral (Rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Anwar Mohd Nor via Mutu Pedoman Sdn Bhd (10%) and former Home Ministry secretary-general Tan Sri Mohamad Noor Abdul Rahim via Kurnia Mantap Sdn Bhd (20%).

Apart from Mohd Anwar, Mohamad Noor, Sreedhar and K K’s brother K Selveswaran, other directors include former Petronas Dagangan Bhd ( Financial Dashboard) director Datuk Kamaruddin Mohd Jamal and lawyer Datuk C Vijay Kumar.

ABN obtained a five-year digital cable broadcast licence through Nilamas Corp Bhd (which ABN was known as then). This licence was activated in 2013.
