Hi, I'm new to lowyat forum as well as to photography. thought I'd tap on this topic to find out what is the general return policy of camera lense. I bought 3rd party wide angle lens on Saturday then then decided to change it to zoom lens on Monday. Went back to the shop at digital mall but was told they will minus 30% of the wide angle lens then top up the difference for the zoom lens. My question is it normal for shop to minus 30% although i bought it less than a week? Thanks.
First of all, it is still a USED unit already, no longer a brand new unit. Doesn't matter whether it is 1 week or 1 month old. It will DROP in value. IMHO, just cut off 7-10% off the current market price.
In this case, it is basically trading in the lens for another lens. You will always lose a lot of $$ when trading in used lenses for another lens. This is a fact as camera shops have to buy it from you
cheap and sell it
higher in order to make a profit. If you were the shop owner, you'd probably do the same.
If you want to get back as much $$ as you can, sell it in the forums here but you must be patient as these sort of things are not very liquid, meaning you can't expect to quickly sell them. If you are lucky, you might get a buyer overnight if your price is good

And if you are even more damn lucky, you are able to find a buyer to trade the lens you are having now with the buyer's zoom lens +top up
So in the end, if you want it fast but lose more $$ = trade in at camera shops
You want to get back as much $$ but willing to be patient = sell in online as a 2nd hand item
