Hi all,
Recently I move job location and brought my printer along. However, at AirAsia airport, I was stopped and said that printers are not allowed on board. They asked to pass to Customs. Lucky enough I had a relative to collect before I flew off. However, this is not the first time. A previous incident was at the AirAsia departure hall, after passing through the checks, I was approached by a staff who said that my printer cannot be brought on board but I told him, "how can this be if I have passed the security check point?", but the staff said I cannot bring on board. I insisted that I needed clarification on why printers cannot be brought, then, the staff only said, "good luck bringing it on board" and left.

I have yet to fly with MAS bringing my printer along. I avoid buying new printers each time my job requires me to move because I wouldn't want to buy for a year and the hassle of finding buyers to buy it from me before I leave.
I wonder how do those who go for the PC Fair every year can bring the electronic items back to their country/city.
I avoid checking in my printer as I am skeptic about the handling of items such as a printers.

Does anyone know of any regulations of carrying printer on the airplane?
Or any other electronic devices that cannot be brought on board but can be checked in?
Is it safe to check in printers?
Anyone has similar experiences?

Thanks!

I have never seen people carrying printers on board. Basically the reason would be the parts which airline deem that hazardous would let them not to allow it overboard

Why do you carry weird things like printers on board?? made of gold??

thanks. I'm skeptic about how they handle but if you recommend to check in and it's safe, then I'll try the next time I travel.

luggage check in next time.

Skeptical on the safety of your printer? during check-in, request for fragile sticker to be pasted on your printer box.

there are few valid reasons why printer are not allowed on board;

1. The size of the box exceeded the limit allowed for hand carry items which to be stowed in the over head stowage compartment.

2. Airline hand-carry items policy. Like AA, they only allow one back pack and one hand carry item not exceeding the dimensions they've set beforehand.

3. Safety reason. Printer has ink cartridges right? They are of liquid form. Possibility of some retard mod the cartridge into liquid bomb is non questionable. Anything can happen.

NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER BUY PRINTER AND BRING OVERSEAS
REASON :--
yes you can install the printer
yes it works
yes it will print
no you cannot find the warranty over there
no you cannot find the printer ink there
no shipping over the ink ah expensive le

SO STOP MAKING IT HARD FOR THE AIRPORT PEOPLE AND THE CUSTOM OFFICER.

TS isn't importing the printer to use in Malaysia. His job makes it necessary for him to move relatively often, and he doesn't want to buy new printers that often.

And the simple answer is probably to check it in. #3 already answered. smile.gif

It shouldn't be allowed to be carried on board.

Even my hair dryer/hair curler has to be checked in eventho it's not that big.

He's staying in one place for 6 months to a year, then move to another place, and so on. His job is probably project based. Complete one job, go on to the next.

so he travels light for a 6 month job but needs to carry around a printer? that is weird.
n that job does not provide him with a printer on location? i would quit my job if it expects me to hand carry a printer on a plane every single time i travel.

Maybe he really likes this printer. Some people are particular like that.

Whether you can bring it or not really depends on the airline staff at the moment. Probably if you're carrying it in a box, the airline might not allow it for many reason. So it is best that you put it in a hand-carry luggage bag. These are luggage bags made to fit in the plane's overheard compartment and complies with most airlines rules and regulations.

Of course there is ink in it and all, which security shouldn't allow but they did.

For the safety of other passengers though, I would recommend against bring a printer on board.

Dont know about printers, but a few years ago while my studying days. I use to hand carry my desktop on board without checking in from sarawak to kl. Never had any issues with mas or airasia.

I even never had my side panel cover on. So they could see the internal parts.
