Hi all,

I am setting my eyes on a Mazda Astina and I need feedback from all of you regarding this car, especially those who drive one.

Things like spare parts availability and fuel consumption, please do enlighten me on these smile.gif

Thanks.

My advise is, dont go for mazda. You will have hard time searching for spareparts for your vehicle. Same goes for 323 lantis

Well, iswara is a reliable car. Though quality might be at the lower end but spare parts are easy to find and all mechanics know how to repair this car tongue.gif You don't have to go for iswara. There's satria and wira too smile.gif

I disagree. Avoid iswara at all cost. As well as Wira 1.3 and 1.5 (especially the auto variant). A general rule of thumb is to get a manual 1.6 engine on any car, or a 1.6 engine mated properly to a 1.8 auto gearbox on either satria or wira.

My term of reliable is it won't breakdown by the road side on a busy day bro. I agree that those 1.3 and 1.5 auto variant most be avoided at all cost '3gears transmission'. Those 1.3 and 1.5 proton cars if taken care well, shouldn't be much of a headache.

Well just to let you know that I define reliability exactly the same way you do, and from my observations iswara does not make that mark. I believe the first generation saga, with ample maintennance, does a much better job at staying together in one piece. But that's just me tho. I used to drive a saga and an iswara before, so I know to an extend.

1.3 proton iswara always got this hard-to-start problem after you left it for a while (still warm).. if immediately restart/cold start is ok. Weird.

How about a '97 Alfa romeo?

@ lord_shadow: If you can live with the drab interior, I say go for it. Spare parts aren't super difficult to find as some tend to think.

Just make sure the car is in good working order and you should have a decent motoring experience.

if im not mistaken u can use ford sparepart for your mazda.
this car not bad la..used to be my dream car when i was schooling. which ever parent drove this car, she/he would be instantaniosly cool.

lol btw 97 alfa romeo?
which one..tt spark or something like that ar..lol i think everymonth payslip come out, maybe half or more will go to mechanic to repair it.

a friend of mine is driving the 146 ..the hatchback..not sure if its 147/146..but its the boxy one. he got it 2nd hand and first month of owning it he already spent 3k just to repair the engine and crap.

after that here n there started to break down and he decided to just sell it off again and bought himself a v6 laugh.gif

hmm alfa romeo? used to be one of my considerations too. Try checking out the 146, not bad at a good price. But well, I dun think the quality of 97ish alfa romeos differs much to the modern day Proton.

I will try to be unbias in my opion.

The first time i bought this car as 3rd hand, gave me a lot of problems rclxub.gif
First few months was not pleasent, I slowly fix it month after month. Previous owner did not really take care of the car i presume.

Now is running smooth, just have to take care of it, like any other car. Just bare in mind that my car is over 10 years old (94 model), so compare any other car that is 10 years old there is bound to be wear and tear.

FC original Full tank RM70 = 400km
moded carby RM70 = 360km

Hope i answer some questions... I'll try to share info as much as possible for those interested.

Oh BTW, all four of my power windows never rosak since the day i bought it.

Tis is wat i picked up from a Astina owner in conversation wit one of my mechanic.

Overall not a bad car. Engine n mechanicals can b replaced by Ford parts. Reliability is there.

But main concern would b body parts. Eg. tis owner's Astina had its outer A-pillar covers cracked n broken. He just wrapped them up in aluminium sheets n reused them coz was quoted rm300+ per side 2nd hand.

Good to hear that spare parts isn't much of a problem to be found here.

totally agree with this statement about the A Pillar, it cracks and easily comes off after it's "Lifetime"... i used to drive one, it was handed over to me by my parents. It was the first gen 1.6, therefore came with a carb engine instead of fuel injection... there's also the import model that came with sunroof and injection engine... N/A B6...

parts are easily sourced... however, they are getting rarer in chop shops... so be weary about this... there's also an option to turbocharge it with a B6 or a B8 engine, the mountings are the same.. it's also the same chassis as the interplay.... with exact meters to match... the pop up lights don't seem to have any problems... mine was about 11yrs old... the only reason why i sold it was to get a turbo wira... i didn't want the hassle of transplanting the engine...

overall it's a nice car.... with a chassis from the interplay, u don't really have to worry much about handling... basically anything that fits into a ford tx3, familia or laser... all fits into the astina... and i think it's a very affordable project car now.... prices are unbelievably low thumbup.gif

however, one thing u may need to look out for... a lot of astinas that i see on the road have been involved in accidents... uneven bodywork, wavy doors panels... so choose carefully... and if u like bootspace.. u will love this car.. the hatchback characteristics give it a lot more storage area... very deep boot.... stock standard form, nothing to shout about except it's late 80's and early 90's sports car look... the only complaint that i have about the design is that the C Pillars are took thick.. which makes reversing out of a parking space a b**ch... sometimes u can't see a car coming cause u can't see through that blind spot... u'll understand more if u drive one... that's why i had to reverse park all the time...

owh! nice thread. i am currently hunting for an ol' sporty astina as a toy car. rotary can't fit inside so either b6t or b8t will be the best option.
btw, the suspension setup in astina is quite different. especialy at the rear.
the replacement easily cost over 300 bucks.

just test drive one the other day. the 1.6 dohc variant. the pick up is good
but most of all, i am attracted to the nice stock suspension which require very minimal modding. and the owner mentioned about the electronic parts which never fail.
newer p1 and p2 car in the market always had this problem.

anyone can recommend a good mazda workshop for restoration?

thanks a lot.

It's a good car,go ahead for it if you can fork out more cash i suggest you go for the lantis instead. at least it looks more moden than astina. For parts you don need to worry since mazda can share parts with ford. Im driving a Ford Laser Lynx 1.8 2 door, 30% of the parts on my ford are from lantis after i met with an accident tongue.gif yeah, convert it with B8 engine brows.gif

such old car dont bother to rapair engine lah.most already done big mileage so just use it until its totally kong then plonk in more powerful engine.i suggest u get a lantis.u might get 10 to 15 yrs old car but sitting inside feels its more modern than wira.its one of few cars designed ahead of its time.the only problem with this car is it's frameless windows bushings.but the solutions are there.u just need to be more resourceful.

My advise is, dont go for mazda. You will have hard time searching for spareparts for your vehicle. Same goes for 323 lantis

do you,did you own one?i had one lantis.converted to 2.0 v6 summore.its a damn good car.parts?it uses same oil filter as wira.knn airfilter available,no need to change.what else?not much.only 1 thing tho,i kept bursting the radiator.probably just because it's old and the plastic has gotten brittle.change to aluminum radiator, problem solved.

TS, forget the astina, just get the lantis.make sure get one with solid body.engine can change

edit:sorry, did'nt realize its an old thread
