Super excited that you guys are lucky enough to have it already smile.gif

Could someone please comment on how reading text - pdf/web browsing compares to something like the note 2?

Screenshots of a text pdf in portrait would be much appreciated smile.gif

Im interested to know to but judging from the spec. Snapdragon 800 literally can handle pdf and heavy browsing like peanuts plus that trilluminous 1080p display!
*
More interested to see how good 1080p on a 6"+ screen actually is specifically for reading text - vs. a 720p screen (like galaxy mega 6.3, or huawei ascend mate). Is there actually a tangible day to day difference? Or do you really have to use a magnifying glass to tell? Does it allow you to read smaller text without zooming?

The processor shouldn't be a issue in my opinion - my note 2 handles large (500mb+ sometimes) PDFs just fine. SmartQ Reader is best for just reading imo (fastest), but if you want annotation features than ezpdf is best.

Would love someone who actually owns one to comment on the above smile.gif Still tossing up whether to buy this or a 6.3 galaxy mega/ascend mate as its ~$400 difference at the moment. Is the 1080p vs 720p on a 6"+ screen worth it? rclxub.gif

Thanks heaps in advance smile.gif

Thanks Benny888 smile.gif

Is it possible to get a screenshot of something like theverge.com /engadget.com on desktop mode?

Want to compare how much further 1080p goes for browsing smile.gif

I'm essentially after the biggest screen I can fit in my pocket. At the moment its between the XZU and Galaxy Mega 6.3.

In Australia, at the moment there is going to be a ~$400 AU price difference at launch for the XZU. (Mega $450, XZU $850+).

For me if I can read text more clearly without zooming in for pdf and web browsing then I'd consider it.

Thanks heaps in advance! smile.gif You guys are so lucky smile.gif

Thanks Benny smile.gif

What zoom level are you using in boat browser?

I'm using text scaling 100% and default zoom medium and I have a wider FOV on my note 2 for some reason.

Thanks again!

Sorry to be a pain, but is it possible to do the same screen shot with only 100% text scaling? With 170% scaling, I can also read it very clearly on my note 2 tongue.gif

Indeed - and that prices is through a grey importer from asia as well!! Local prices are even higher! Thus the reason I'm taking the time/deliberation to make sure I get the right device for my needs. If I'm getting it purely for the screen - is it worth an extra $400 AU? tongue.gif

Plasmapuff : I don't understand why you want to view it at 100% when at a higher % you can even read clearer n all contents still being displayed
Anyway here it is at 100%
I suggest you test n view such stuffs at the store yourself to satisfy your curiosity
Like Chinese saying you are given an inch but now you want a foot

Thanks Benny for your patience smile.gif

At 100%, you can view more content on the page no? The point of having 1080p is so that you can read small text without zooming? So if you can read text clearly at 100% (instead of needing 170%) - isn't this a good thing?

The problem is that in Australia - Samsung has said the Galaxy mega will never be launched here, while the XZU wont get here until mid september at the earliest! So I will never by fortunate enough to see these models in person before purchasing sad.gif

Will stop bugging you- thanks for your understanding smile.gif

Thanks so much for the pictures and review Benny888 smile.gif

I really want the XZU but am finding it hard to justify at the moment with your pictures showing marginal difference of the XZU 6.44" vs. Galaxy Mega 6.3 in the screen quality and reading. In theory 1080p sounds much better than 720p, but functionally for reading text, the pics don't show it.

For me at the moment-
- Galaxy Mega 6.3 8GB 4G LTE - AU$449 (1340RM)
- Huawei Ascend Mate - AU$375 (1120RM) - but this is only the 1GB Ram version which has been reported by many users to have lots of lag when multi tasking.
- Xperia ZU 4G LTE in September - AU$845 (2520RM)

As you can see there is a big difference on price, which is very hard to justify.

Pros of XZU over GM 6.3:
- Faster processor, more RAM which provides some degree of future proofing - although many reviews have praised the speed and responsiveness of the Mega 6.3, comparing it to the Note 2 which I have currently and am satisfied with
- Waterproof and slim - Don't personally think I will use the waterproof feature much at all. Slim - GM6.3 is very thin too, only 1.5mm difference vs. XZU. Also glass back is prob easier to break than plastic (as much as we deride plastic for being non-premium).
- In theory a sharper screen - but from the pics for text, there isn't much difference in terms of readability.
- Stylus writing - for what its worth even though its pretty poor.

Cons of XZU vs. GM 6.3
- Price - the XZU is almost the double the price of GM 6.3
- Lower screen to body surface area ratio - thicker bezels and onscreen buttons take up more of the phone.
- Camera +LED flash - arguably better photography on the GM 6.3 from what we've seen so far.

Arrrrhhh I really want the XZU...but lol so hard tongue.gif

And I'm back considering this phone again...Able to get the 3G version as an import for AU$739 which is ~RM2160. smile.gif

Might wait for the 4G version, as one retailer has listed it only AU$30 (88RM) more expensive than the 3G one.

Will also be good as more accessories and firmware updates and hopefully custom ROMS on xda will be out.

My main annoyance with the XZU (aside from the camera, no LED, poor stylus and cost) is with the onscreen buttons and how much space they take up on the beautiful screen.

Has anyone been able to root their device yet?

You can use something like Fullscreen toggle with PIE controls to get access to all of the screen.

These dont require root to my knowledge. smile.gif

can we install apps on the memory card? 16gb really not enuff.

Root and install LinkSD from the market and it installs everything to the SD card. MicroSD is so much cheaper than onboard flash memory.

I'm waiting for 4G LTE version as it will have better resale. Like the Note 2 4G, it was initially more expensive than the 3G version but now its actually cheaper/same as its more main stream. Likewise in Australia, 4G reception is terrible and is only in the city centre at the moment.

Then your pockets are way way too small. Why wear so metro jeans? tongue.gif

My note 2 even fits into my running shorts... I'm a skinny guy too.

Isn't small fonts a good thing? That's the point of 1080p screens- see small text more clearly so you don't have to zoom in as much.

On my note 2 I have everything set to 213DPI (same as tablet) so you see can see more...

First you need root. - very easy, safe and easy to reverse if required. First thing I do for any device I buy. So useful - Adblocker, Titanium back up and many other cool apps. This is as an aside to custom ROMS smile.gif

Then install Xposed framework - very simple just an apk.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401

Then install whatever modules you want. The one for tweaking app DPIs (you can tweak each one like Paranoid Android) is called App Settings.
http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/Android/Xposed/

Modacco also has a collection of modules under their one toolkit.
http://www.modaco.com/topic/361634-xmod-mo...osed-framework/

Very easy to do if you have root. I run Chrome on 213 DPI (tablet) and also for PDF readers too. You see more on the screen - something I'm hoping the 1080p screen will help (means you can make text smaller and still read it clearly). Also makes certain apps think you're running a tablet and it engages tablet UI - dual panes etc smile.gif

Any q) let me know smile.gif

No, not yet to my knowledge but Doomlord, a prominent developer for the XZ on XDA is confirmed to be getting one, so its only a matter of time smile.gif

This is another benefit for me for waiting for the XZU over the Mega 6.3 - more mod/XDA support.

Hehe waiting for LTE version and also price to come down a little bit. RM1900 is my buy in. By September when the note 3, HTC One Max comes out, it should be there or there abouts.

Hopefully will be root, custom ROMs, multiple firmware updates by Sony for XReality, stylus input, camera etc by then too. I'm patient. The note 2 is still serving me well smile.gif

Do you guys have dual band 3G in Malaysia?

Even if no LTE reception, dual band 3G (requires LTE phone) is still quite a bit faster than 3G alone.
