Hello all smile.gif

I will be in the market for a lappie sometime in the near future (not too sure exactly when as I have the urge, but not yet the need for one) and after some digging around, I've narrowed it down to these three locally available models:

1) MSI GE-40
2) Lenovo Y410P
3) Illegear RE-13 Pro

I'll list the pros and cons (for me) of each model:

GE-40

Pros
Balanced in pretty much every sense
- Price (Midway point RM 3,650 - Garage Sales)
- Dimension/Weight (2 kgs)
- Screen (1600 x 900)
- Batt life

Cons
- Despite the higher resolution screen, reviews have said that the screen leaves much to be desired.
- Malaysia not having the SSD option (could be circumvented by buying it separately and manually swapping out the ODD)

Y410P

Pros
- Cheap! (RM 2,900.00)
- Design in my eyes look better than the GE 40
- Did I mention cheap? tongue.gif

Cons
- Heaviest and fattest (2.5 kg)
- Screen (1366 x 768). Seems like the local version don't have the 1600 x 900
- Stock HDD is only 5400 RPM
- batt life

Illegear RE-13 Pro

Pros
- Lightest (Not thinnest though)
- Best Screen (1920 x 1080 IPS)
- Ability to somewhat customise how it looks (Lappie without logo anyone? Now that's smexy wub.gif)

Cons
- Frightfully expensive at RM 4,200 for the base spec relative to the other two
- Goes up even higher if you wanna customise the innards

Other notes

I'm leaning towards the GE40 tbh as it looks to me to be the most balanced in every way. If the Illegear wasn't so expensive for the base spec, or if I feel richer and have bought all my other needs first, it would definitely go into my list of "highly considered".

However, I am not an expert and my knowledge is gathered from stalking key individuals in the forum (yes I'm creepy like that) laugh.gif

So, comment and advise away! Which of the three would you blow your money on? Did I miss anything important when comparing the three? Should I wait for something that will be released late this year or early next?

GE 40 @ RM 3,650
Y410 @ RM 2,900
RE-13 PRO @ RM 4,199

PS: I'm looking for a balance between weight/performance/price. I already have an ok rig at home and I don't really play games that are too demanding. Mostly will be used for heavy multi tasking and maybe some autocad/solid works (when I eventually get around to it) with a little bit of AI and PS thrown in.

Unless if you really need the HD+/FHD screen. Just stick to the Y410p nod.gif
Use remaining budget to upgrade to SSD, and the rest for warranty extension/accessories (or even an external monitor) brows.gif
*
Well, I could always hook it up to my TV I suppose. It's just that the weight and thickness of the Y410 is a bit of a turn off sweat.gif But it is cheap though. Kinda like best bang for your buck kinda cheap. Sigh.

Thanks for your input though biggrin.gif

QUOTE(Areas Elysian @ Jul 26 2013, 12:32 PM)
User of the GE40 here. I have mine with a 128GB SSD, 256GB SSD and a 1TB HDD.

Just fyi, weight wise the GE40 is the lightest of the lot at 1.9kg.

With Illegear, get the most basic spec and do the upgrade yourself. Get it naked if you can. Their upgrade pricing is really expensive, better to just source it yourself.

With that out of the way, you need to ask yourself what are you going to use it for? What do you value?

My reasoning for the GE40. The best balance between performance, battery life and weight. The screen does leave a lot to be desired, but that is if you have an IPS next to it. On its own you don't really notice it.
*
I know you use the GE40 *insert maniacal laugh here* laugh.gif

That's a lot of disk space you have there man. That I didn't realise laugh.gif

Anyways, regarding the Illlegear, if I were to get it as bare as possible though, wouldn't upgrading it myself void whatever warranty they give?

On a different note, is RM 550 really worth it for the bump to the display and GPU?

HD+ --> FHD
GTX 760M --> GTX 765M

I'll be using it mostly for work...and a bit of play. Somewhere in the 60/40 distribution? For work it'll be mainly used for Excel (Many many many open at the same time). For play; AI, PS, with a bit of gaming on the side. Mostly RPG, and old ones at that - Skyrim, D3, Dragonage (Not too demanding I think). Much later on I'll also hope to use it for Solid Works and AutoCad (not too much on AutoCad though). Finally probably some Matlab thrown in.

I need it to be as light as possible (within reasonable means of course) since there is a chance I'll be travelling a lot for work. I was from the old skool Inspiron 1520 (the only gen with a dGPU I think), and that piece of machine is not light...especially if you take the public transport. Especially so in Malaysia, with the crowd and heat.

Thank you for the feedback regarding the screen btw. Much appreciated. So the screen isn't so bad if you're out and about then? Is the difference moving from a FHD to an HD+ very jarring or is it acceptable?

QUOTE(Liuteva @ Jul 26 2013, 02:16 PM)
Whats your budget?

Dont compare the specs first.
*
Don't really have a budget? Though I think the most I would fork out for a lappie at this point in time is RM 4,000. Since I don't think anything more than that is justified for someone that's not really a hardcore gamer.

-----

So guys, am I missing any other notebooks worthy of note? How bout future releases? Since I'm not really in a rush to buy one atm.

I guess the main questions I have now would be:

1) Is the price bump of RM 550 worth it to get a FHD/GTX 765M from an HD+/GTX 760M
2) For those that travel a lot, does 500g ~ 600g make a lot of difference?
3) Owners of Y410Ps, how do you find the screen and the overall weight/size of the machine? I've also heard it has heat issues?

Thanks a lot guys for the input. Much much MUCH appreciated smile.gif

Dolby Home Theater v4 surround sound effect
Ultrabook with Intel 4th Gen i7, 30% thinner than normal noteboook, 15.6" Touch @ only 2.2kg,

I've had many, many bad encounters with an Acer to the point of not daring to buy any more of their products. It's a personal thing though. Specs Look alright though for an ultrabook an at that price.

Hi TS,

Thanks for putting your opinion for side-by-side comparison.

For your info putting your own parts won't void your warranty, we even guided our users to do this on their own.

The man himself! tongue.gif

Thanks for the feedback. This would definitely bump it up to the "highly considered" zone biggrin.gif

QUOTE(johuru93 @ Jul 26 2013, 08:19 PM)
ILLEGEAR is considered "Not Expensive". If you own one then you'll understand.
A GTX and IPS screen, at that base price is already a good deal.

You may say, illegear base specs won't have say, ssd's or even OS or Enough HDD space or RAM comparatively for it's price vs other brands, but that's what that makes it even better.
You will know exactly what you've paid for. ( i doubt the quality of other brands because they give good specs for lower price even if it's mass produced )

Think twice before reconsidering, knowing what's in your machine and EASY maintenance and Adaptability ( you can buy and add your own ssd, ram, hdd ) without voiding warranty as said by Prince J.
I asked this before i bought my RE-15.

That saying, budget matters so it's clear, go for Lenovo/MSI.
I'd say MSI>lenovo.
*
Very interesting approach to it. I guess you get what you pay for? If that is taken into consideration, I suppose it's better to hold out from buying one just yet and get a better one for something that would provide more satisfaction down the road.

Cheers for the change of perception mate.

QUOTE(Areas Elysian @ Jul 27 2013, 01:17 AM)
Just remember that moving from HD+ to FHD increases the processing power needed for gaming from the GPU.

But base on your work with AI,PS and what not, you would appreciate the higher resolution as well as an IPS screen.

Both the GE40 and RE-13 are similar in weight, so you won't feel much difference there.

One thing you can have going for the Illegear though is you can spec it without any HDD and RAM and what not.. so you can easily just use some old parts for now as make shift if budget is an issue.
*
I had the misfortune of thinking my "gaming" rig could handle SC2 on ultra. I was woefully wrong. Going full HD, rig couldn't take it sweat.gif

Hmm...IPS. I suppose if it's work the screen would make more of a difference then huh.

I was just thinking of getting it as bare as possible and popping in stuff as I go along OR I could just wait it out till some people decide to pay up their debts and I have more cash sweat.gif

Again, thank you for your input. If LYN was a tumblr variation, I'd be following you and a few other people tongue.gif

Lol whut? I wonder why they didn't just pop in a DDR 5? Funny people.

--------------------

I would like to thank everyone for their input. Helps a lot.

I've surmised that if I'm in a rush to get a mobile rig, I should go for the GE40 purely for the price/performance/weight ratio.

If I can hold out on buying it (which is sort of my current situation), I'd get the RE-13 PRO bare, and spec it bit by bit since warranty is not voided (That's really nice of them btw).

By waiting I can also (hopefully) wait for more Haswell systems to pop out...or somehow someone's developed how to compress everything into a small form factor without compromising on heat. One can hope laugh.gif

I'll leave the thread open in case of anything smile.gif

Thanks again guys! thumbup.gif

Just a note.

We have been receiving many reports that inexperienced users failed to upgrade their system/ port over their own parts /installing their own OS.

If there is physical damage done by users when they are upgrading their laptop the warranty void.

ILLEGEAR guides users how to install their own OS/ parts but we hold no responsibility when users failed to do so.

Therefore it's advisable to pre-order everything you want when you order.
*
Physical damage? Lol. I think that's a given that should there be damage by the user, the warranty is generally void. Not really rocket science is it?

Still, I suppose it's a good heads up for those that have never taken apart a computer before.

Bloody ell. I've had my GE40 for only a WEEK and NOW the Aspire V7 premium comes out. I very jelly now. Damn you Acer.

But seriously, here's my 50 cents to the matter.

WARNING, THIS GETS LONG! Even without the stuff in the spoiler.

<My take on the GE40>
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

TL;DR: The MSI GE40 is the spiritual successor to the Compaq V3000, but with hugely upgraded internals.

So, will I recommend the GE40 to someone else? I will, but with clear caveats.

If you're looking for an balanced blend of mobility and power at a great price, and you're ready to accept the compromises that come with it; then by all means, the GE40 is a great choice. If you want a bit more power at the cost of mobility, pick the RE13. Although running stuff at full HD with the RE13's 765 should equal running stuff on 900p with the GE40's 760 90% of the time.

Plus the RE13 ALSO runs almost as hot as the GE40 -  so the only thing you're gonna get with the RE13 is a brighter, HD screen (that might suffer from IPS bleed, and is NOT the better one from ChiMei), better more robust construction (that is still, unfortunately, largely plastic) and less battery life (4 hours tops). Another plus is that you get on-site service.

As for the Y410P, NOT having the 900p variant come into Malaysia was the worse decision Lenovo ever made. Otherwise, it's cheap and you get a chance to SLI BUT that's about it. Well, IMHO it's being sold for below 3k for a reason.

As for the V7, as envious as I am, it's an Acer. An ACER! Oh the memories of broken hinges, subpar construction and drawn out warranty claims. It's the sexiest "gaming"  ultrabook I know of though, other than the Razer Blade and the Gigabyte Ultrablade (lol at the names)...

... BUT IT'S AN ACER!
*
Well 'ello there! Was hoping you'd reply biggrin.gif

"Power at the cost of mobility"

How do you mean? I thought the two were about the same weight? Dimension-wise, the RE13 is thicker by about 2.7mm (compared to the thickest part of the GE40). That's about it, length and width-wise, it's actually thinner. Though I do suppose the height would make more of a difference in portability. In this case at least.

I totally share your sentiment regarding an Acer. A lot of bad, badddddd experiences. It seems that the moment the warranty dies, everything starts falling apart.

QUOTE(Areas Elysian @ Jul 31 2013, 02:19 AM)
Which V7 are you talking about specifically? I know it comes in various screen sizes and what not... And AFAIK, the V7s all comes with Dual Core only.. so not as good as the Quads in the GE40 when it comes to PhotoShop and Lightroom.

Also, for those who are not too into warranties etc and want to take the leap, GE40 purchased from Amazon for RM4250 delivered from the USA, comes with mSATA board (2x slots) and ODD Bay SATA slot. Stock with 128GB mSATA SSD (SanDisk) and 750GB SATA 7200rpm (Hitachi).
*
I was made to believe that MSI has an international warranty for the first year? If that's the case, it's really just getting a reduced warranty for better specs. The amazon link you gave earlier didn't have a promotion anymore. So I guess prospective buyers should have it bookmarked.

Wow. He totally undercharged you for shipping. Good deal man! biggrin.gif

QUOTE(Eiraku @ Aug 1 2013, 02:06 AM)
Well for one it's thicker... by a bit... but that's not what I really meant. Mobility here is more towards "freedom from the plug" kinda mobility - the GE40 has a substantially better battery life, rite? Like 6-7 hours max with the right settings versus the 4-hours tops the RE13 is rated for. This gives you more leeway to move around with the GE40, hence "mobility".

BUUUUUT, "right settings" would ultimately mean surfing the Internet or something else as light. If you wanna do heavy stuff I guess both them laptops die around the 2 hour mark anyway so my point is moot.
*
Ah. Now that makes more sense. Forgive my oversight. Should have seen it sweat.gif 2-3 hours of extra time away from the plug is really quite a bonus tbh. Damn. Now this is quite a game changer. Thank you ever so much for pointing that out. Though I do like the look of the RE13 more now though. Especially if I could get it without any logos and just slap on my own vinyl design over it.

Battery life is still quite pertinent though since the whole point of having a portable computer is for it's portability. If I am away from a wall plug, I don't think I'll be doing any gaming so that point is definitely not moot. Hmmmmmm.

Again, thanks for all the input guys smile.gif

As of right now and the sudden hike in unexpected expenditures, I don't forsee my self buying one anytime within the next two months sweat.gif

To answer your question though, it's either the GE40 or the RE13.

It all really boils down to what Eiraku has (so kindly) pointed out. Mobility in terms of battery life.

I love it when all these people pop in! I learn lotsa new stuff biggrin.gif

Thanks again guys smile.gif

Two months.. many things can happen in that time. Yeah.. GE40 or the RE13 seems to be the usual two candidates for powerful small-ish machines that will not burn a hole so big in your wallet that your balls gets burnt too.

Also, it's normal for people to want to know the choice of others. It builds confidences in their decisions or future decisions etc. LOL. Or will give them reason to doubt or reinforce their own decisions.
*
LOL! I like the condition of my balls the way it is thankyouverymuch laugh.gif

Digging around in other forums seems to reveal the same two choices. It's either the MSI or Clevo. A lot recommend the P34G too...such a shame we won't be seeing it on our shores though.

Myself, I just need input from real users such as the three active people sharing their thoughts here. Helps a whole lot in making an informed decision. From being all undecided I've managed to narrow down my "key requirement".

Maybe I'll wait for PrinceJ to announce a Diwali or Christmas sale to decide. That seems to be the pivoting element in my purchase for non-critical items nowadays laugh.gif

Edit: i may buy Illegear 17 RX... seem Single powerful GPU not enough to my taste... maybe dual... try Alienware..Asus G series and now MSI GT series maybe Illegear next...  blush.gif

If I wanted a "big boy" gaming rig, I'd just get a desktop...Having something that big and bulky kinda defeats the purpose of having a laptop. Especially in terms of portability and battery life, imho. I'm not a self-professed pro-gamer that needs to have an SLI/Crossfire config. smile.gif

I'll be happy enough with a fit-for purpose notebook that is a jack of all trades. Don't really need a "big boy" gaming notebook rolleyes.gif In fact, it'd be the equivalent of getting a MBP just so I could blend in at starbucks laugh.gif

Going back on track, is a full HD on a 13/14 incher overkill though? Thoughts?

You will need the grunts to push the FPS out. Most notebook at that size lacks the GPU power for FullHD if you're gaming. If you're not gaming at all, the higher the resolution the better.
*
So in other words, get a FullHD for other utilities but when gaming, scale it down to a lower resolution? That'd work right?

QUOTE(Eiraku @ Aug 13 2013, 05:52 PM)
If it's general use, as long as it comes with a decent GPU (and you have the cash), general screen quality overrides resolution IINM. In the case of the GE40 vs the RE13, Prince J has kindly updated the fact that they are ONLY using the high quality Chi Mei panels so that shoots the GE40's screen to high heaven.

Which is WHY probably MBPs are selling so well, even with last gen innards. Even the non Retina screens are so damn good. Plus the effing battery life and the build. If not for THE PRICE and the outdated innards, I think MBPs (especially the 15 incher) present a near perfect blend between size, mobility and power (especially with a 660 over the stock 650 GPU).

I do understand the need for bulky "GAMING" laptops over the cost savings of a desktop, being the nomad that I am. It's just far far more "portable", no matter how "bulky". Throw it in a bag and you can bring it anywhere.

I prefer smaller, more portable machines personally though, but that's just me.
*
They really give you the best of what they can offer huh these Illegear people? laugh.gif

A MBP is a brilliant machine. It's just that I find myself usually associating it to hipsters and the like. I've used several of my friend's one and I can truly understand why once one has started using it, one does not turn back to a PC. As you said, the build, screen and battery life is made just right. If not for the pricing, I'm sure most people would make it their default on-the-go rig.

IMHO, the idea of a gaming laptop has been oversold and not to mention, overused. For someone such as yourself, then perhaps it has it's merits...however my years in uni lugging around a 15" old skool Dell was really not pleasant. In retrospect, I didn't even need all that power - I spent more time with word and excel than anything else! sweat.gif The only saving grace was the dreadful cold of Aberdeen so you don't sweat much laugh.gif

So I've promised myself never again, to get something heavy and bulky. When I say notebook, I mean something not likely heavier than a book. Portable means I can lug it around half the day and not worry about stunted shoulders laugh.gif

Try it out for yourself. Some people can see the differences, others can't.

For me, down scaling almost always results in blurred fonts and details. Though I have not seen in real life a 13.3" FullHD to HD down scaling. It's just something like speakers/headphones. Some people can tell the difference and are picky, others don't care and as long as there's bass, they're happy.
I, myself, ever since my first year Uni days with a 15" old school Dell, decided to just assemble a Shuttle SFF computer. Since I really only moved it between Australia and Malaysia, and it was more powerful than any laptops back then (mobile GPU was only then just starting out, so mainly just low end GPUs).
What monitor does your friend who has the GTX780 play on? For me, I will never be amazed with 1366x768, no matter what the details settings are at. Of course, that's after playing it on a 2560x1440 27".
While I do not have a RE-13, I can give you my 2cents worth on the GE40. On Power Saving mode (brightness 50%, CPU max 50%), I can go for 5+ hours of excel, office, web browsing. Web Browsing consumes the most power.

On Balance mode (brightness 80%, CPU max 99% so no Turbo Boost), I get about 3-4 hours.

The real killer here for me is the GPU, consuming most of the power.
*
Many thanks for that! Helps out quite a bit then if I actually need to do work on the machine. 5 hours+ is plenty if I don't do a lot of browsing then. That seems quite acceptable for someone used to running for a wall plug after only an hour laugh.gif

Will take note on the screen advice...though based on what Amal has posted...don't seem too bad tbh. Helps when I need the extra real estate on the screen (seeing as to how tiny it actually is).

QUOTE(Amal @ Aug 14 2013, 05:32 PM)
Unfortunately the battery only last 2.5-3 hours on web surfing, microsoft office app.
Hoping that a BIOS will solve the battery issues.
Maybe I should change to 4702MQ if it does help a bit.  hmm.gif
He is using a normal 1920x1080 24".
Translate to 91.71 pixels per inch.

That must be one nice monitor you have there. Mine is only 1920x1080 on 24" at home like my colleague.  sad.gif

So, a 2560x1440 on 27" is around 108.79 pixels per inch.
A 1366x768 on 13.3" is around 117.83 pixels per inch.
I'm guessing it should looks almost the same, if not of the slight blur due to the non-native resolution.
With Ultra settings on Battlefield 3, it enables all the highest Antialiasing features and so on, to make it look more sharper.

That's...a lot of difference. Half the battery lifespan. Yikes. I didn't know it would be such a big difference between the 4700 and 4702MQ sweat.gif Much to learn I still have, hmm?

IIANM, someone posted somewhere that using the 4700, you could emulate the 4702MQ by fiddling with the power settings and what not. Is this doable on your RE-13 by any chance?

You're comparing raw ppi, but you must remember, at higher resolution, you can have larger UIs as well and the fonts and from sitting back at normal viewing distance, it's pretty damn nice. Not to poison you. tongue.gif

Also, your friend is crazy to have a GTX780 for a FullHD screen. That's overkill. If I was still using my 24" monitor I would have stuck to my GTX580 SLi as that handled everything thrown at it.

Most likely what made the 1366x768 look decent on the 13.3" was the fact that the screen is FullHD to begin with, so with that many pixels there, it down scaled nicely.

That's partially why I want a higher resolution. Especially if I'm travelling and am gonna output via a TV or a bigger monitor. As someone pointed out earlier, the slightly better GPU of the RE-13 would be better at handling FullHD as opposed to the the GE40.

Did I get that right?

I'm not entirely convinced it's just the 4702MQ that's giving us GE40 users that extra 50% battery life. Keep in mind we're also on a not-quite-so-bright TN screen (which while looks like shiat, should use less power) and we don't have keyboard back lighting (which uses little power but uses power anyway).

So, even with everything optimised, I expect the RE13 to be able to barely reach 4 hours tops.

Also, it seems if you have enough time, you might be able to tweak the 760 up: seems MSI Afterburner can tweak the GPU clock and memory speeds. Not sure if it'll work though.

Buuuuuuuut, like I said, if you need more power, no amount of tweaking can override a faster GPU, unfortunately. And the GE40 will only get hotter after pushing limits (and it's already plenty hot as it is).

Like I said before though, if you can accommodate a 17 incher, the MSI GS70 has the power (4700HQ + 765) AND the mobility (3-4 hours WHILE GAMING it seems) while remaining thinner and only a TAD heavier than even my GE40.

Seems like amal can confirm the 4 hour mark laugh.gif

I was initially looking at that particular model - was well impressed by how thin it was considering it's a 17 incher. In it's class, it's relatively light, but on it's own, 2.7kg is really quite hefty methinks. Still, everything about it seems nice though (bar the multicoloured keyboard light sweat.gif ). On a side note, I don't consider 700g to just be a tad heavier laugh.gif Will keep it in mind though. Maybe if I need something more powerful...though I don't see it happening soon, especially considering my gaming needs - which aren't much.

Guess I'll never use that kind of monitor until I own a desktop then.  tongue.gif
I don't think it will make that much of a difference.
Yes, we can play around with our CPU with the Intel XTU app.
It was me who did the simulation test, to differentiate the temperature. smile.gif
Haven't test in terms of power usage.

Our GTX765M can also be overclocked if you need the extra power in the future.
Proly increase around 20% more performance.
Yup, definitely not coz of the 4702MQ.
It's how the system handle it I guess.
Clevo did a bad job on that.

I doubt that the GS70 can do gaming for 3-4 hours using its dedicated GPU.
But still, MSI did a good job on the battery.

Update : After putting on power saver mode, turning off unnecessary apps, reduce the screen brightness to a viewable level, based on the estimation, it can last around 3.5-4 hours of web surfing.

Ah, so it was you! Lol. Sorry just remember reading it and nothing else sweat.gif

I guess I'll wait for someone who ordered the RE13 with the 4702MQ to give an update then. I'm in no particular rush to buy it...so time is on my side biggrin.gif

So. it seems that you can reach the 4 hour mark by tweaking around. What was the brightness setting for you to consider as a viewable level?

I thought of compiling all the relevant posts and putting it on the first post. Will probably take some time though.

Has this already been done, and if not, will it be beneficial? Otherwise I won't bother laugh.gif

Really good info here btw. You guys are superb! biggrin.gif
