Is there any monk guide for beginner?

I am new to this game x.x
No idea what skills to take

Lvl 21 at the moment..

Level 1-60 is more like learning mode where you can experiment with all the skills. Typically, once a new skill unlocked, you should try it out.

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/monk

Typically, when the slot become available, you may end of having one of these:

1. Primary - Fist of Thunder, arguably, Thunderclap is the best rune. Fast in generating spirit, it also hit multiple mobs at once. You also should try experiment with other Spirit generator like Deadly Reach, Way of the Hundred Fists, etc.
2. Secondary - Wave of Light aka Bell. This is the best damage dealing skill in game. Alternatively, you can try Lashing Tail Kick or Tempest Rush (good for mobility)
3. Defense - Breath of Heaven very good in low level for healing, higher level you want to use Blinding Flash for mobs control or Serenity if you die a lot.
4. Techniques - Sweeping wind - any rune as it become available. This skill cause a constant damage on all mobs around you. Most monk use Sweeping wind. Dashing Strike is cool too.
5. Focus - Should try Seven sided... it's awesome and effective in low level.
6. Mantra - Evasion is popular in low level, at high level, most monk chose Mantra of Conviction (Overawe)
7. Passive - Low level, Guiding light is popular, high level, One with Everything and Seize the Initiative almost always.

Once you become familiar with these skills, you can enable "Elective mode" in Option to allow you to put almost any skill you want in any slot.

Refer to the first page for some popular builds such as Cookie Cutter, Tempest Rush, etc.

Just ask anything in this thread... Monk threads are the most active in this forum. tongue.gif

Alright. I will learn all the skills then. I tend to not learn a skill that I don't use much (after reading the description)

And does the choice of weapon affect my dps? Like dagger with sword , sword with axe. Scramble up..
*
the number on the weapon indicates it's damage. yes, it's directly affect your DPS. the only different between dagger, sword and axe is their attack speed. faster attack speed is important to generate spirit.

So the better choice is Mace with high dmg, yes?
*
typically, if same DPS, chose faster attack speed:

dagger (1.5) > sword / fist weapon (1.4) > mace (1.3) > 2 handed weapon

Exactly, you said it right with far fewer words as compared to my long version of the explanation.

sometimes longer is better biggrin.gif

on another development... wall of text on pre-patch expansion / RoS:

http://www.diablofans.com/news/2216-story-...weekly-roundup/

- no more NV (as of now)
- changes in damage mechanics

also, there is supposed to be some discussion on Monk about changing the ratio of Spirt Gained per skill vs Spirit Spent per skill. but it's not there... hopefully some good soul that attended the booth can share it later.

looking at the datamine, spirit gen has huge boost (except WoHF reduced from 8 to 7... duno why?)... but some skill such as Dashing Strike also has increased in spirit (25->50)... most other skill such as BoH and Blinding Flash no longer need spirit at all!

cannot make sense out of it at the moment...

I have a question here

I am currently in Nightmare mode now so which MP should I choose?
*
that depends on your DPS and EHP.

rule of thumb: chose an MP that you can kill efficiently and without dying too much (as in no death in every ~30 mins).

Effective Hit Point. Your actual Hit Point with consideration of your armor and resistance.

Import your char into this side to get it.

Why when i import, it says my lvl is 23 , my actual lvl is 33 now..
*
sure u import the right character? u can chose any heroes in your account during import...

ps: but at this point (before level 60), it's hard to say what EHP you required for which MP. if inferno, we have some pretty good idea. so, you still need to determine this yourself by playing it sweat.gif

Maintenance! Nothing to do! Lets discuss the upcoming changes (not confirm) by Bliz!

http://www.diablofans.com

We are getting HUGE buff in spirit generation. FoT which generate 6 spirit will now generate 14 spirit! Deadly reach, 6 to 12. Crippling Wave 7->12, WoTFH 6->12.

Many spirit spender skill such as Bell, 7SS, palm got nerf. I am not worry too much on these, the nerf is not huge, and moreover, with more spirit, we can spam more.

Mythic Rhythm passive got buff. biggrin.gif

Dashing strike no longer need spirit! Ownage! It is now better than Serenity.

However, sad news... MoC Overawe got nerf slightly. It will still be ownage since our damage will be 3 times more from current.

Combat will be faster... fast generation, fast spam... Monk philosophy.

there is a cooldown as stated clearly in diablofans, 6 seconds per charge max 2 charges as reserve

bliz gone all the way to make this skill awesome! i wonder how much mechanics they need to change to make it work biggrin.gif with these, you always have 2 dashes (unless you use Quicksilver which gives u 3 charges), allow you to intercept and dash out quickly. 6 seconds time out is hell lot better than serenity cool down.

Thunderclap gonna get nerf hammer... ohmy.gif

Proc scalar for all skills... thunderclaps is awesome because every hit will hit multiple mobs..

"So obviously that prediction came to fruition. Are there other things like that, that you saw or predicted, that ended up being completely different than what you expected?
Yes. Are there things that turned out different than I expected... The importance of proc scalars, I think, is something that we underestimated. There are some skills that are huge in popularity because they have a way higher proc scalar, it's kind of out of the norm. The most obvious example is Fists of Thunder - Thunderclap, which has a way higher proc scalar than pretty much any other skill in the game. And then everyone uses it. And there are other skills which have particularly low proc scalars, and people don't even know which ones those are, I'm guessing, because no one uses them! So I think that we underestimated how important correctly tuning proc scalars was going to be.

Going forward into Reaper of Souls, this is sort of a debate that we've had internally. Should we have skills that are good because of their proc scalar; is a high proc scalar one of the reasons I should be using a skill? Or, should we normalize the proc scalars across the board? We've opted for the second. We're saying: look, we have a ton of cool skills, but if we have a skill that has a proc scalar that is way too high, that one skill is going to unlock all these other broken combinations. Yeah, it's cool that that combo exists, but it's not cool that I can't use any other skill. We'd rather say: if you want to be a Critical Mass Wizard, you shouldn't have to use one or two specific skills with high proc scalars. If you want to be a Critical Mass Wizard, you should be able to use Critical Mass and combine it with any other skill that has the geometry, or the elemental damage type, or the casting mechanics that you want."

Network is not good here... but I do have a sample RoS demo for the monks here biggrin.gif

The Fist of Thunder animation has been improved. I am playing Master difficulties, highest possible for level 60. Level up to 61 in minutes (I still have my ruby and Hellfire). LS has been nerf quite badly, as expected. You also should see spirit pump up so fast it basically full most of the time!

(youtube link uploading...)

ps: just looted a Marquise Ruby and Marquise Diamon... sweat.gif

Not sure how the Reduced Cool down work. I have Marquise Diamond on my Helm (10% reduced cool down), then I max the reduced cool down with my paragon point (10%), finally, I have Beacon of Ytar (20%). However, my total cool down is just 35.5%. Not sure if that's a hard cap or just calculation...

No BoY, 19.45%. (10% Diamond + 10% Paragon = 20%)

No Diamond on helm... 27.98%. (BoY 20%+10% paragon = 30%)

but all three BoY (20%) + 10% paragon + 10% diamond = 35.5%.

look like there is a diminished in return.

The more I play, the more I am pumping Toughness... I have more than 1mil toughness now... sweat.gif

The game look familiar at first, but as you level up, LS is worth towards nothingness, and Mobs getting more powerful, suddenly tactic and skill becoming more important. I mean, you really need to walk out of danger even though with 1mil EHP (100k HP)...
