Is it alright to promote a charity at a Bazaar during Ramadan, or would a promotion for a charity be too businesslike for a friendly bazaar dedicated to enjoying the end of the fasting day. I.e. is it culturally and religiously insensitive to promote a charity during a Ramadan related function such as a bazaar?

I guess it depends on how it's done. If you're promoting an event or a cause then it's fine. But sending kids asking for donation around, I personally think that is a nuisance. Not to say it is a bad thing in giving out donations, but asking kids to ask for it is certainly not the right way to approach things. Plus, they should be resting/studying anyways.

Doing a fundraiser and setting up booths to promote the cause, that would be fine. Especially if it is something not too fancy, given the fact the target audience will be regular house folks. Just my humble opinion. biggrin.gif

Chicken wing, we totally agree with you. Sending kids around to ask for donation is a nuisance!

We were considering trying to raise awareness regarding recycling computers and the technology divide. Simply setting up a booth at Bazaars who will let us, or simply handing out flyers and mingling with the shop keeps in places where we couldn't get a booth permission but we don't want to impede anyone from getting their bazaar items! We just want to let people know that during Ramadan, when people are keeping charity in mind anyways, there is another way to donate and make an impact - we're not asking money, just hoping people will donate their old technology and let us repair it so those devices can have a second life among people with no access to technology!

@ Lazy - We will let you know when we have our schedule finalized. We should be doing some promoting next week. If the Bazaar is in your area and you want to join us we would really appreciate the assistance! icon_question.gif

Yeah, that way is totally fine then. Some simple awareness activities would suffice. Coz most 'pengunjung' are mainly those coming back from work or housewives who still has a lot more to get done before break fast. So, I personally feel too elaborate campaign would not send the message intended. Plus, during this hour, most will totally be engrossed with what foods they wanna buy. Let us here know about your final plans, maybe some of us could join in the fun if convenient.

GOOD LUCK !! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Thanks Chickenwing24. We'll let you know once we confirm all the dates/locations. We think we'll have 8 or 9 different promotions starting next week. We're just planning on having a simple booth or in places where we can't have a booth, just being out with flyers and a namecard dropbox. Just tell people about what they can do, and if they want more information they can either take a card or a flyer or leave us their information and we'll send them 1 (ONE - ONLY ONE!!!!) email about how to donate their computer, how to get help for an organization near them! We don't want to be a nuisance or a pain, we just want to let people know about the different kinds of charity they can participate in while they go to get their delicious foods!

We'll let you know about times so if you all can help if you're enthused! Even if we aren't near you, feel free to tell your friends about tech recycling or check out our website, www.solstech.org!

Talk soon! biggrin.gif

I'm actually recently working a lot on community empowerment projects. Our aim is to empower communities in a sustainable way. I'll see if maybe we can figure something out and probably work together. Will have my team contact you soon if we come up with something. biggrin.gif

We would love to work with you - I'm sure there's a way for us to help each other!

And not just us; though we're fairly new on the LowYat Forum, it seems like there are a lot of people with similar ideas who are interested in their communities here in Malaysia. biggrin.gif
