Used to Have 4 golden retrievers at home..but all died..Got the original pair from aus..which gave birth to the other 2.which died recently a.. both 12 years old..

Realised that a lot of u pple are interested ingetting retrievers..Hip dysplasia is a common problem..so dont go for a cheap bargain....u might pay more for vet bills later..

M2k2land..think ur prince looks really small for a golden..

I got a new golden puppy at home! bought it at one utama..hope u guys enjoy ur retrievers...brillant dogs..

yeah my friend,

Vet did tell me that the max size of prince is 25KG now is 21.8KG. This is because when he was 8months old, he get a tick fever and red urine (when I adopt him) I spend almost 500-700 for that. It might be good thing because my GF dont like big big dog smile.gif

Congratulation to you for new GR ! lets make a gathering and we go out together smile.gif wub.gif

Hi,

Just asking, does anyone having difficulty walking your dog? sad.gif

I feel that my GR puppy doesn't like to go for a walk. He will be very happy to get out of the house initially but after passing maybe 5 houses, he will just lay down and refuse to walk anymore. I have to coax him to get him up and walking. Then, after a while, he will start laying down and refuse to walk again. doh.gif

The process keep repeating so it is kind of frustrating to keep walking and stopping all the time. Sometimes, I have to resort to treats just to get him up.

I am wondering whether anyone has a similar problem and how to overcome this. icon_question.gif Or is this unique to my puppy only. rclxub.gif

if he lay down means hes tired lo smile.gif
if you force him too much also not sure it will benefit...hes puppy right, maybe hes not super fit...slowly train him day by day and increase the distance weekly i guess

how tight is his collar? 2-3 fingers can fit between his collar and neck?

sad.gif but so fast tired for a distance of 5 terrace houses. Yes, he is a 4+ months puppy now.

This morning when I took him out for a walk, I can only manage to walk from my house to the first house on the same road (about 11 houses) and back, in 15 minutes time. doh.gif He sat down 4 times and refuse to walk. However, when he come back to my car porch, he was happily running in circles around my car rclxub.gif That's why I don't think he is tired at all. sad.gif

I am actually taking him out for a walk in hope of releasing some of his pent up energy as he is very hyper and likes to look for stuffs to chew when he too free. But that doesn't seem to work as he don't like to walk.....

Collar not tight, it is loose enough for 2-3 fingers. smile.gif

ok...why dont you try this...try to walk him the same distance in your house compound compared to outside

if he stop and lay down means you know hes tired...then maybe you need to send to vet to check if hes having any health problem.

if he can walk with you no problem then maybe he dont like to walking outside or scared of outside environment...if this is the case then you can slowly train him to walk outside of your house.

btw...all puppies will chew and destroy your things at a certain age coz their gigi is itchy...best you can do is quarantine him where he cant destroy your things/harm himself by biting wire and still give some space to be free i dont think walking him till tired will solve this problem. after a certain age he will stop destroying your things biggrin.gif

my dog also last time when young damn troublesome, walk out to go to car he will jump on you and all the footprints on your pants and shirt, have to go and change again. come back he will jump on the car window to greet you and the car full of scracthes at the window. say NO!! how many million times to him when he was young lol

but now he is ok la lol

I not so sure about 4 months olds tongue.gif because i know my prince at 8months he is the most playful and like to walk outside. You can bring him walk 1-2hours but when he know u wanted to bring him home, he will stop walking, lay down and go in another direction. Hahaha rclxub.gif

So I not so sure ur GR behaviour, maybe other member can advise smile.gif

Hmm...I tried walking him in the house today with a leash. He seems not to like it very much as he keeping pulling the leash towards the gate (like indicating he wants to go out) sweat.gif However, he didn't lay down on the floor. I don't really know why he doesn't like to walk outside. Maybe it is too soon to take him out for a walk. unsure.gif

I hope my GR will be like yours when he reach 8 months old. At the moment, I think he is very happy to go home rather than walk.

Last week while bringing him to the padang nearby, he managed to break free from his leash and headed straight home (speeding). Luckily there is no car when he cross the road. Almost gave me a heart attack. I thought I am going to loose him then. I was running madly after him and shouting his name. Luckily, he know how to go home. When i reach my house, he was walking around the gate, trying to get in. rclxub.gif

How long have you had her? He may still have trouble adjusting to a leash and collar. Do this. Have the collar on and keep him leash even when you are at home. Tie the leash to your wrist or belt and have him follow you when you are at home doing stuff. You can be sitting down as well, which is fine. Have him follow you around. That will get him used to a collar and leash. Of course if you have to do something that is not possible to have him around, unleash him. I am only having you do it during the training period. Believe me, your dog will enjoy being near you.

On walking, do short walks for a few weeks. One very important mistake that I see you making is that you are stopping when the dog is stopping. You are not being dominant but instead letting him control the situation. When he stops, he's learning that 'Hey, look at this! When I stop, my owner stops and pay attention to me. How lovely! I think I will stop and get the attention'. What you need to do is to give a command to start walking and then keep walking. If he stops, don't look at him, don't give him the attention but repeat the command to start walking and keep on walking. I am not saying you drag the dog along harshly. Just tug gently and don't pay attention to him. It takes practice but you need to teach him, he is supposed to follow you. When you walk, he walks. When you stop, he stops. Not the other way around. Trust me, it works.

Hi RedBox,

Thank you for your advice. I have him for about 2 months now. I guess he may have trouble on the leash and collar, as he doesn't wear a collar at home. I only put on the leash and collar if we are going out. Initially, I did give him a collar but he keep scratching so hard at it and look so uncomfortable that I end up taking it off him. I have started to put a collar on him now (before I left for work today) so he will get more used to it. I will try on the leash in the house and walking tips too.

I did try to continue walking when he stops, but no matter how hard i pull, he will refuse to budge. He can be very very stubborn. I will try not to stop next time. It is kind of tricky as if you pull too hard, he will choke but he still don't want to move.

Nice doggy!! smile.gif Won, I know it is difficult when he refused to follow you to walk. Just tug gently to a point where he is uncomfortable (not choking) and hold it there. He will get up and follow. Control the situation. smile.gif

Yup. nod.gif He is now wearing his collar for the 3rd day now. Still scratching at it sometime but lesser now. Good suggestion on the identification tag. I hope to get an engraved one before CNY, as I will bring him balik kampung with me. wub.gif
