M2k2land..think ur prince looks really small for a golden.. I got a new golden puppy at home! bought it at one utama..hope u guys enjoy ur retrievers...brillant dogs.. Vet did tell me that the max size of prince is 25KG now is 21.8KG. This is because when he was 8months old, he get a tick fever and red urine (when I adopt him) I spend almost 500-700 for that. It might be good thing because my GF dont like big big dog Congratulation to you for new GR ! lets make a gathering and we go out together |

Hi,
Just asking, does anyone having difficulty walking your dog? I feel that my GR puppy doesn't like to go for a walk. He will be very happy to get out of the house initially but after passing maybe 5 houses, he will just lay down and refuse to walk anymore. I have to coax him to get him up and walking. Then, after a while, he will start laying down and refuse to walk again. The process keep repeating so it is kind of frustrating to keep walking and stopping all the time. Sometimes, I have to resort to treats just to get him up. I am wondering whether anyone has a similar problem and how to overcome this. |

if he lay down means hes tired lo
if you force him too much also not sure it will benefit...hes puppy right, maybe hes not super fit...slowly train him day by day and increase the distance weekly i guess how tight is his collar? 2-3 fingers can fit between his collar and neck? |

This morning when I took him out for a walk, I can only manage to walk from my house to the first house on the same road (about 11 houses) and back, in 15 minutes time. I am actually taking him out for a walk in hope of releasing some of his pent up energy as he is very hyper and likes to look for stuffs to chew when he too free. But that doesn't seem to work as he don't like to walk..... Collar not tight, it is loose enough for 2-3 fingers. |

ok...why dont you try this...try to walk him the same distance in your house compound compared to outside
if he stop and lay down means you know hes tired...then maybe you need to send to vet to check if hes having any health problem. if he can walk with you no problem then maybe he dont like to walking outside or scared of outside environment...if this is the case then you can slowly train him to walk outside of your house. At the moment, I think he is very happy to go home rather than walk. So I not so sure ur GR behaviour, maybe other member can advise Last week while bringing him to the padang nearby, he managed to break free from his leash and headed straight home (speeding). Luckily there is no car when he cross the road. Almost gave me a heart attack. I thought I am going to loose him then. I was running madly after him and shouting his name. Luckily, he know how to go home. When i reach my house, he was walking around the gate, trying to get in. |

QUOTE(won @ Jan 30 2007, 10:45 AM) Hi, How long have you had her? He may still have trouble adjusting to a leash and collar. Do this. Have the collar on and keep him leash even when you are at home. Tie the leash to your wrist or belt and have him follow you when you are at home doing stuff. You can be sitting down as well, which is fine. Have him follow you around. That will get him used to a collar and leash. Of course if you have to do something that is not possible to have him around, unleash him. I am only having you do it during the training period. Believe me, your dog will enjoy being near you.Just asking, does anyone having difficulty walking your dog? I feel that my GR puppy doesn't like to go for a walk. One very important mistake that I see you making is that you are stopping when the dog is stopping. You are not being dominant but instead letting him control the situation. When he stops, he's learning that 'Hey, look at this! When I stop, my owner stops and pay attention to me. How lovely! I think I will stop and get the attention'. What you need to do is to give a command to start walking and then keep walking. If he stops, don't look at him, don't give him the attention but repeat the command to start walking and keep on walking. I am not saying you drag the dog along harshly. Just tug gently and don't pay attention to him. It takes practice but you need to teach him, he is supposed to follow you. When you walk, he walks. When you stop, he stops. Not the other way around. Trust me, it works. RB This post has been edited by RedBox: Jan 31 2007, 12:13 AM |

I only put on the leash and collar if we are going out. Initially, I did give him a collar but he keep scratching so hard at it and look so uncomfortable that I end up taking it off him. I have started to put a collar on him now (before I left for work today) so he will get more used to it. I will try on the leash in the house and walking tips too. I did try to continue walking when he stops, but no matter how hard i pull, he will refuse to budge. He can be very very stubborn. I will try not to stop next time. It is kind of tricky as if you pull too hard, he will choke but he still don't want to move. QUOTE(simchi @ Jan 31 2007, 05:23 PM) siew chu pose |
