Abandoning during the pick phase doesn't result in low priority. It counts as a loss in-game, but if I'm not mistaken, it's not recorded on Dotabuff (not sure about this part).

There was a YouTube video about this. The Luna gets like 20+ kills and gets a box.

Rumor is Valve compensates. People who feed/lose will start to hate the game over time, so give them items to keep them happy.
