if you've seen the film negatives of an old camera, you see a lot of large frames (squares) that will hold your images whenever you take a photo.
animation is basically a sequence of these frames moving at a speed of averaging 12 frames per second normally. the reason we see the object moving is because our brain is tricked by the data of movement interpreted by our eyes.
and it seems that the Photoshop CS2 has the animation built-in now. that I never knew.
