In the world of the stupendously wealthy, status symbols count for a lot so Roman Abramovich may be perturbed by the announcement that he is no longer the owner of the world’s biggest superyacht.

The Russian billionaire had previously topped the list with his 163.5-metre-long vessel Eclipse, but the magazine Yachts France has now confirmed that he has been usurped by Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. President of the UAE, he has been revealed as the owner of the 180-metre-long Azzam.

Built by German construction company Lürssen Yachts in Bremen, Azzam came to public attention when it was launched in April but little information about the hulking structure and what its sprawling interior contains has been made available. Abramovich’s Eclipse has 25 guest cabins, a dance hall, two swimming pools and its own mini-submarine capable of submerging 50 metres. Yachts France has claimed that Azzam features six bridges and a 550-sq-metre lounge, in addition to a vast number of suites and other expected lavish touches.

Having an estimated construction cost of more than £400m, Azzam is a surprisingly fast vessel despite its size. It has a reported 94,000 horsepower engine and should be able to travel at around 30 knots. Whether the yacht is deployed to sail the world’s oceans or will remain docked and on display as another UAE status symbol remains unknown, but it is likely that visitors to the Abu Dhabi segment of the 2015 Volvo Ocean Race will be able to see the yacht for themselves at that time.

Lürssen has delivered Azzam on 22nd October 2013. In addition to being the largest yacht in the world with a length of 180 meters and with a top speed of over 30 knots she adds another record in terms of building time: less than three years from steel cutting following one year of engineering.

No billionaire is complete without a superyacht of his or her own. In fact, a November report from Wealth-X and the UBS Global Billionaire Census found that the average billionaire spends $22 million on yachts.

The latest study from Wealth-X ranks the most expensive luxury asset acquisitions of all time, and it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that eight of the top ten purchases were yachts.

8. Dilbar, $263 million

Alisher Usmanov, Russia's wealthiest man, bought this 360-foot superyacht for $263 million in 2012. Dilbar, named after the billionaire's mother, has accommodations for 20 guests and up to 47 crew members, in addition to a helicopter pad, swimming pool, and swanky formal dining room.

7. Radiant, $286 million

Originally commissioned by Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, this 360-foot yacht was sold to Abdulla Al Futtaim, a billionaire car dealer from the United Arab Emirates. Radiant's amenities put a James Bond twist on the typical superyacht experience. It's equipped with sonic guns that would burst the eardrums of attackers, along with water cannons that could sink an approaching boat from 100 yards away. There's even a smaller speedboat designed specifically for a quick escape.

Music mogul David Geffen purchased Pelorus from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich in May 2011. Scheffler purchased the Italian-designed yacht for $330 million in 2011.

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich purchased the 536-foot-long Eclipse in 2010, when it still held the title for world's largest yacht. Eclipse has two helipads, a disco, cinema, hair salon, and restaurant, plus it's rumored to have a laser defense system against paparazzi trying to photograph high-profile guests.
