I just bought a used 80-200, f/2.8D and there were quite a number of fungus in quite a number of elements. Then there is a problem with the focusing ring engaging in manual mode. Although, the picture quality is still outstanding.

The thing is, because this was my first "very expensive" lens purchase, I sent to Nikon Service Center in Times square, waiting for quotation. The thing is, I am not sure how much they would charge me, so I don't know what to expect. I was wondering if any forumers have the experience with the Nikon Service Center? Like how much they charged, how long it took and the quality of the repair?

Thanks.

He bought it used to safe to say there's no more warranty, unless stated of course tongue.gif

I've sent my 80200 two touch to Nikon TS before. The cost of the repair depends, i sent my last time cost me RM700+ and iirc they will need to remove the name plate on the lens in order to get one of the screws underneath it so pretty sure that confirm kena replace ady from my experience laugh.gif

As for how long will it take to repair, mine were about 2 months because when i sent mine, 1 week later the big flood hits thailand so pretty much have to wait for all that to sort out before getting the parts in. If they have the parts it can be done in few working days only. For quality of work that one hard to say, depends on the technician i guess but so far mine is good.

Then TS has to wait for a quote lohh.

The last time I went there was to fix up my Nikon Coolpix P7100 which had a flash issue. It was taking like forever to charge. ohmy.gif Overall it was a very good experience dealing with them. The customer service personnel knew what she was talking about and the process of getting the paperwork done was a speedy one. It was on a Thursday and I told them that I will be travelling back to Singapore on the following Monday. The personnel said that they will try their best, and to my surprise, they called on Saturday to inform me that the unit is ready for collection. thumbup.gif Up til now, the camera works like brand new! rclxm9.gif

Same focusing problem? When they removed the name plate, how was their job of getting the plate back on? I have to admit I am too obsessed with the cosmetic sometimes. What else does the RM700 covers? If it is only the focusing problem, then I really made a bad investment.

Thanks to everyone for your reply. I have yet to receive the quotation, the personnel there said it should be within this week. Let's see how it goes.... I wonder if there is other more "affordable" alternative to service the lens...

Mine different problem. The name plate will be replace with a new one (they charged you of course). Mine suffer the famous focus ring crack thingy so replace that aswell + some internal parts i cant remember. The rubber grip for focusing also changed iirc (or was it the zoom one)

Labor cost alone like RM150 or so if not mistaken hmm.gif

Hmm, come to think of it, this lens will really rake up quite a cost. From visual inspection, it has the loose af/mf ring, the af/mf button is not working, the lens has quite a number of fungus, and the focus ring not engaging as well... I guess I made a bad call with this lens. Might as well get a normal used lens. I guess no pain no gain.

It's better to send to outside technician, cost wise.

From the mentioned problem, it'd probably cost u half the price of a very good condition used of the same.

And even after repair, won't be "as good as new".

Wow, Nikon does not charge cheap even if it is because of their design flaw... Looks like I should look for alternative...

Alright, an update (Sorry for the long hiatus, thought I could confirm it within a week). Anyway, here is the event.

Last Wednesday (10th of July), I received a call from Nikon Service Center, they said the repair will cost me RM498 (weird number, I know). I was happy, because it costed lower than my expectations. I said yes immediately, and then the guy said it should take about a week.

Fast forward to this week, I was wondering about the repair status, especially when they did not call on Wednesday to tell me to take the lens. I called and emailed, and they said they will get back to me before weekend about the repair status since the lens is at HQ. Then coming to friday (19th of July), I received no call at all. Got me worried there. I called, and they said they will get back to me on Monday! Got me pretty upset, because I have to take the initiative, because empty promises was made to me.

Now, you may say that "the guy said it should take about a week, so it is just an estimation." I know that, that's why I have been emailing and calling them, trying to have them update to me. I don't mind waiting, as long as there is an explanation.

And they are supposed to be the official service centre? A phone call should not cost them, considering that they charged quite expensively.

I did send my used Nikon AF-S 80-200mm for service because of fungus. After the service, the autofocus doesn't work, They say because there is sound in the lens the motor might have died. So I argue, before I send, autofocus working and after service the autofocus doesn't work so whose fault? But anyway they repair for me without any charge but the cleaning of the lens is about rm200 plus I think and took about 1 week. The lens is now is working and very sharp. rclxms.gif rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

AF-S? That's one expensive motor to repair. I guess they at least they are credible.

To sum up the entire experience with them (I would only rate "fair").

Pay RM20, for around 3 days for quotation to come in (Not cheap since broken ring, fungus cleaning and broken tab in manual focus engagement costed me RM498). Then waited for a week and a half to get back the lens. They were kind enough to lend me a lens, though, after explaining that I needed the lens urgently. They are quite friendly in all. Just that, I guess they are really short on hand at the technical centre, or so they said. Not in a position to argue with them, though I believed it.

As like any original service center (from my past experience with phone and computer like Nokia and Asus), they don't charge cheap but at least it is secure. Don't expect too much on their promised duration though. It is not entirely their fault that they can't deliver the lens within a week (they did say "about" a week, guess my definition is different).

Oh yeah, I noted some not so pleasant mark on the screw head, could be their intention to tell everybody that someone has opened this lens and fiddle with something inside, or just a not-so-good handiwork.

Anyway, I am happy with the lens, my first fast zoom and with each picture, I am getting more excited.

Thanks for tuning in.

My experience with the Nikon service centre was quite pleasant, sent in my D90 because of the front focusing problem and they said its gonna take bout a week+ cause there's quite a lot of others to be service as well. I told them that I was leaving to Sabah by the end of the week and ask them if they can post the lens back to me if I'm not able to collect it. They said they'll try to fix it ASAP... and to my surprise, they call me after 2 days and said my camera is ready to be collected... rclxm9.gif
