yeah it's a better option, compared to normal portable pendrives, if you need like 256gb of space. (almost same price, but better speed)The SSD Thread V4, Solid State Drive

QUOTE(chocobo7779 @ Feb 23 2015, 10:16 AM) really?! ok there were so many things happening during the holidays. need to do a little bit of catch-up first. equation's hard drive firmware malware, sim card breach in the us/uk, lenovo's superfish, nvidia's 970 law suits, nvidia's reintroduction of overclock-ability, and samsung's 840 evo new fix. |

QUOTE(Nursh @ Feb 23 2015, 08:38 PM) Hi i'll be using ssd to bot my window 8 and playing some Steam games while using 1tb hard drive as storage, is this good enough? That budget is not enough to get a decent ssd.Transcend SSD SATA3 2.5' Series 370 128GB 7MM my motherboard max is 6gb/second sata connector and budjet is around RM200. I dont have much experience can u guys advice me on which ssd to buy QUOTE(air_pull91 @ Feb 23 2015, 09:28 PM) hi.. You can register the ssd with plextor and claim warranty from them.can i ask any plextor m5pro here.. 2 weeks ago i bought used once.. but the seller dont have receipt? how do i claim for warranty? QUOTE(TheHitman47 @ Feb 23 2015, 11:27 PM) this, ive read alot of people reco 840..but since the first problem found and then somebody found out the same problem happen again even after fix. i just decide to not getting the samsung ssd. I agree with you if it's 840 evo. Just get whatever you think good QUOTE(ngkhanmein @ Feb 23 2015, 11:41 PM) by the way, samsung always look great during 1st impression but then... Yes, just get whatever that suits your budget so far my samsung stuff like phone, tv, ram, charger, (still thinking) none of it spoil but the performance really not great as they stated. don't trust those benchmark shit that samsung perform the best among others ssd. bro just go for crucial BX100 or other cheap one. seriously, samsung is too highly over-rated & recommended by those reviewers i personally avoid toshiba HDD. fyi, only toshiba washing machine can buy & consider one of the best lasting wm. |

QUOTE(Jigoku @ Feb 24 2015, 12:13 AM) I should have read before getting it. The problem with 840 evo is the slow read bug when you have old data (at least a few weeks old). New one doesn't show this sign. There might be other issues tht caused the slow reads of your 840 evo.Just got myself 840 Evo 500GB. I tested both diskmark and AS SSD both telling me read & write at 330mb+ I should try using the fix and hopefully it fix it? |

QUOTE(Nursh @ Feb 24 2015, 01:48 AM) So what is the best ssd for my price range then? doesn't hv to be the best though, i did some research and decided to get transcend ssd 370 120gb and still wondering if it's a right choice liteon s900. the write speed of s900 is around double of transcend s370. from vr-zone chinese site (http://chinese.vr-zone.com/142755/plextor-m6s-twin-liteon-s900-ssd-start-selling-in-japan-02062015/), s900 is the cheaper option of plextor m6s. |

QUOTE(rav3n82 @ Feb 24 2015, 04:54 PM) Do you happen to know this Liteon S900 is using what controller? I see the specs, it is like a mix between M5 Pro and M6S. i did some digging and found this: http://notebookspec.com/lite-on-s900-256gb-review/277643/the controller is the same as m6s (Marvell 88SS9188). m5pro xtreme is Marvell 88SS9187. edit: this is another site. http://www.myce.com/news/specifications-an...revealed-74762/ This post has been edited by horns: Feb 24 2015, 05:29 PM |

QUOTE(Jigoku @ Feb 24 2015, 05:59 PM) maybe you should tell us more about your machine that the ssd is attached to.QUOTE(rav3n82 @ Feb 24 2015, 06:02 PM) Nice, it is essentially a cheaper version of the M6S but with higher IOPS. Actually what does IOPS means? iops (input/output operations per second) is basically a performance indicator for storage (i.e. how often a storage device can perform io tasks). in general, the higher the numbers the better. what makes ssd shines is its iops for random reads and writes of small files (which usually reflects typical computer usage), which is much higher than hdd.there are many things that can influence iops, but we assume that these results are from the same test environment, using the same measurement tools by all manufacturers. (so, we can use it for reference only, because the numbers vary in different scenarios) wikipedia has a page about this. edit: sorry i posted this too slow. wcypierre explained about iops already lol This post has been edited by horns: Feb 24 2015, 06:51 PM |

QUOTE(Jigoku @ Feb 24 2015, 07:26 PM) yes you do. just refer to the mobo manual for the right location of the intel port.i suspect you have plugged the ssd into a non-intel sata3 port, hence the slower speed. QUOTE(Nursh @ Feb 24 2015, 07:27 PM) if i were to install window 8.1 on my new ssd, will my 1tb hard drive which act as 2nd hard drive storage for my 258gb Local disk C(where the windows 7 ultimate installed) work as storage when connected to the new ssd with window 8.1 ? yes. it will be your storage.what do you wanna achieve? a dual-boot? if you wanna have a dual-boot system, it's better to review the tutorials available online (google them. there are a lot of them). if you don't need that, it's better to unplug the hdd, install windows with only ssd, then reconnect the hdd to the system after that. better yet, just clean up the os/system/recovery partitions on the hdd first to avoid boot issues if you don't know how to handle it. |

QUOTE(Nursh @ Feb 24 2015, 07:46 PM) i hv 2 hdd now , 1 installed with window 7 258gb while the other 1 is 1tb act as storage only. the 258gb hdd has problem bcuz it's over 5-6 years old alrdy so i dont plan to use it. im just gonna use single boot on window 8.1 . btw what do u mean by "better yet, just clean up the os/system/recovery partitions on the hdd first to avoid boot issues if you don't know how to handle it." ? Previousy i made an assumption that you only have 1x 1tb hdd that acted as boot and storage drive. Leaving old system partitions as is sometimes create messy situations to users that are not familiar with os installs. My bad |

QUOTE(ngkhanmein @ Feb 25 2015, 07:53 PM) thanks for the heads up side notes: for those who are worried about privacy (data cannot be wiped before rma due to various reasons. it's actually a security risk), you can start practicing whole disk encryption if you haven't done so. i use bitlocker to encrypt my drives. (especially internal and external drives that contain sensitive data) well, i do more than that for sensitive data. bitlocker alone is not that safe but it should be fine for situations like rma. also, always makes multiple backups of your data (usually important ones only). |

QUOTE(ngkhanmein @ Feb 26 2015, 04:45 PM) then get crucial drives. actually for new crucial ssds they have changed the tbw according to capacity, to be more reasonable now. for some reasons mx200 is acting weird (based on reviews) but you still have options like bx100, mx100 and m550. |

kitguru.net is conducting yet another endurance test for ocz arc 100 240gb.
http://www.kitguru.net/components/ssd-driv...100-ssd-drives/ the manufacturer endurance rating of this drive is 20tb. however the first one died after 320tb of writes. |

QUOTE(Skylinestar @ Mar 5 2015, 02:39 PM) i am using a small samsung xp941 as boot drive. the current ones in the market need heat sink to help dissipate heat. for cost reasons, i think 2x 256gb sata ssd raid0 can achieve better performance.worth it or not, yes to me it's worth it. however, if possible, you should wait for models from other brands (with speed higher than 1GB/s). QUOTE(Maxieos @ Mar 5 2015, 06:48 PM) NightFelix does those benchmark the same between malaysia version of SSD ? yes, these benchmarks apply to the same ssd in Malaysia. and as for the price RM450 , how to confirm whether is original firmware fix ? I heard there's a firmware bug around certain batch . as for firmware fix, you can check out the manufacturer site for the latest, and apply it yourself via intel ssd toolbox software. |

QUOTE(Skylinestar @ Mar 6 2015, 01:10 AM) Is heat sink included in all M2 SSD? not all. most of them are either bare drive or mounted on a pcie adapter without heatsink. so far i think plextor m6e black has a proper one out-of-box. note that this is not a problem. a simple remedy to this is get a third party pcie adapter (preferably that supports at least pcie 2.0 x4. currently the better one is pcie 3.0 x4) with a proper heatsink. Is it hotter than standard SSD (which is normally cooled via casing fan intake air)? from reviews, yeah it's hotter. i have posted a comparison video not too long ago (a few pages behind). in short it can reach over 100c with a simple file transfer (large file transfer, GBs of data). the ssd controller was said to be built to withstand such heat, but my main concerns are that overheating effects to other parts of a computer. one thing to note is that heat does affect performance of a ssd, so it's better to keep it within safe operating temperatures in any way possible. (you can refer to the ssd specs for the temperature range) when i say m.2 ssd i mean those that use pcie lanes, not any other types. the optimal use of m.2 ssd depends on how you want your system to be set up. if your mobo is z97, it's good to run it if you only do a single gpu all the way. if you wanna use more gpu (i.e. sli/cf), x99 systems are more optimal because they have more pcie lanes. (in terms of pcie lanes, i am not talking about using pcie switch in the mobo, because imo they get the job done but not optimal). currently the use of a pcie adapter with heat sink is better in terms of heat dissipation. there will be improvements in this area at later time, and i believe we are not far from using bare m.2 drives safely without heat sink.
