l got quote samsung evo840 rm290, while kingston v300 rm250 after discount, both are 120gb, haven looked into intel one  icon_question.gif
*
in terms of speed between the two you mentioned, Samsung Evo even without RAPID mode beats it flat nod.gif

but V300 have more endurance than TLC based Samsung 840 Evo

extremely good pricing you got there, mind sharing the 240GB pricing? brows.gif

l suppose 120gb is enough for me, sry gonna ask some silly question, why 240gb?  laugh.gif l mean any significant difference from getting a 240gb instead of 120gb one?
*besides space gb  icon_question.gif
*
not a silly question, its one of the most commonly asked as well

cause SSD benefits when you leave a certain % of space available inside the drive. say you have a 120GB, you leave 15-20% space left available in the drive, this helps to keep the SSD retain its top speed or be consistent in performance (not sure am i explaining this right :/) if you hog it down to less then 10%, your SSD performance will drop and youll start to notice things arent as zippy anymore

for my case 120GB, i have to leave about 15-20GB free which if you look from this way
>120GB full cap
>111GB after format
>Windows 8.1 is est 20-30GB taken
>then add in drivers, other essential items (up to 5GB)
>i left.. 80GB+
>throw in a game, (games these days are huge) and youre already reaching the 20GB limit sad.gif

yeah leaving unallocated space helps (i.e. over provisioning). again, this depends on usage. 10% should be good enough for normal use (imo leaving too much space unallocated is a waste)

i have to stress the effects of ssd slowing down is not like immediately. it will slow down with time (but usually many months later). you can minimize this effect by leaving it idle for a few hours to do garbage collection during weekends (i.e. just leave it alone. it will do its job to regain performance). by the time you think your drive is slow to an unacceptable level, just wipe it clean, do a secure erase and start over.

so, use the drive normally, like hdd, and don't worry so much smile.gif

yep

but best still dont go overboard, just leave it as precaution nod.gif

hi there im planning to buy ssd 120gb this week, here my setup

Intel I5 3470 @ 3.2 GHz
Asus P8B75M-LX
Elixir 4GB DDR3 1600
1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue + 2TB Western Digital Caviar Green
i want ssd just for sake want to try the speed...i do a little photoshop, autocad, sketchup3d but not occasionally just as part time job, no gaming only basic word/excel/surfing stuff

size 120gb, reliable, easy to find.......thnx
*
you should name your budget

Plextor M5S 128GB RM284
Crucial M500 120GB RM289
Samsung 840 Evo 120GB RM309
Intel 530 120GB RM344 <--- 5 year warranty
Corsair Force LS 120GB RM325

all these are pretty easily found and purchased at standard IT shops. best if you head to Lowyat Plaza for the above mentioned SRP

all within my budget btw.....among those brand ur suggest which one give most performance?
*
read speed wise, theyre more or less similar as its the SATA ports thatll throttle their speed more than the SSD

as for write speeds, Intel 530, Corsair Force LS and Samsung 840 Evo is the fastest among the top

but theyre still more or less similar in perf due to limitations of SATA3 port

maybe ill take intel or samsung....does ssd easily spoil? should i take intel with extra warranty or just get samsung..
*
unless youre really unlucky and got lemon unit, SSD is generally more reliable than HDD

both Intel and Samsung have very good track records in SSD reliability and quality, so no need to worry so much

try follow the steps done in this website
http://www.thessdreview.com/ssd-guides/opt...dows-8-edition/

he cover most of the important parts really well

the basics would most usually be setting boot as AHCI instead of IDE, and disable auto defrag, and update to latest SSD drivers/firmware

guys, new to ssd here..jsut got mine
i heard it's not encouraged to download torrent or any big files into the ssd as it can wear down it easily..is it true?
*
yep, SSD have limited writes so its best not to keep writing too many files on it

though ofc, the writes are sometimes super huge until itll take a while before it dies. even by then, youll prolly upgraded to a new SSD laugh.gif

usually MLC are rated 10GB writes per day (i could be wrong) so provided you dont exceed that, your SSD more than capable enough to outlast most of your PC parts

EDIT: sorry my bad, bolded part is incorrect. they are rated more. for example Crucial M500/M550 at 66GB per day

Actually how big is the difference?

I heard people say when loading LoL, 1 - 2 secs already can, WTF?
*
1-2 second boot up is impossible imo

you need wait BIOS pop up, then splash screen and stuff

at most within 20 secs

faster than HDD anyway

I remember i use to do that, converting to AHCI to RAID back and fort, due to RETARDED SandForce SSD firmware upgrade program only works on AHCI mode.  sweat.gif  doh.gif  (intel ssd are excluded from this problem)
Never tried the registry method though but i remember it was tough.
Now using Plextor SSD, peace of mind lol

TRIM command is depends on OS i think. IDE or AHCI mode does not matter iirc. without TRIM your SSD still can do garbage collection but at it will done poorly due to no TRIM.
*
the registry method isnt tough, but abit complex than usual

i have to do that everytime i reformat my PC sweat.gif i cant seem to enable AHCI normally through BIOS

Enterprise will usually have RAID and other multi-device redundancy in check so SSD/HDD failure is not an issue at all, but of course a good way to warn before it even fail is a good sign for SSD manufacturer such as Intel, this shows Intel is in good account for such measure, thumbs up for Intel but would like their drive to live a bit longer though...  sweat.gif (Expensive ler.. my friend...)

Oh, this one should be put on first page, can always quote those newbie to look at first page for more information, unless TL;DR then we can smack them a bit (beyond spoon-feed).
*
Intel expensive?

its more expensive than the usual. but not by much afaik

worth it if you get the peace of mind though nod.gif

ordered 10 unit of the 512gb.

Selling price for each arnd RM700. might be less.
Warranty by crucial. RMA ureself with crucial Singapore.

5 units reserved. 2 for me and 3 for friends.
so only selling 5.

Just waiting for allocation. Really long wait to get it...
256gb waiting list is short.
A lot of System builders are ordering a lot.
*
i have a friend interested in procuring a SSD too, can he join the bulk order?

if yes, PM me on how much is the 256GB variant wink.gif

as u know the price is way less than the amazon with shipping.

not a bulk order bro.
i only start the wts when allocation and shipping confirmed.
so after that when about to reach ppl just have to cod.

thought more ppl would be interested in the 512gb since its much cheaper on gb to price ratio.
*
well, its the Crucial MX100 right? should be more or less RM300-400 for 256GB

it is cheaper, but 512GB for mainstream user is kinda too much considering they dont use SSD for work sweat.gif

heck i might join in the order as well, but too much of a hassle unless i can get rid of my current Intel SSD. so at this moment only a friend of mine is interested

how would the ordering process goes?

nice.. finally samsung 850 pro is here smile.gif

imo the 10-year warranty is to reassure consumers so that they can use the drives without worrying about common misconception of ssd's 'limited' lifespan. still, the warranty of ssd usually has two parts: time, and terabytes written (tbw) iinm. if either of them is reached, warranty will be voided.

10 years is a long time, but tbw still depends on usage.
*
or perhaps theyre aiming at the low cost enterprise market? hmm.gif

usually those market, they rarely change parts as often as common consumers
