I saw plextor m6s 128GB selling here for RM 299 is that good price for the ssd?
*
check out garage sales and you might find slightly cheaper m6s.

Any recommended SSD for macbook pro? I'm using the mid-2012 non retina and currently running with 1x128gb OWC 6G SSD + the 500GB stock HDD.

Thinking to upgrade 250GB samsung 840 evo and move my OWC to second drive. But did read some review samsung 840 evo have some performance issue (not alll, but some).

Would like to hear any suggestion for a SSD on macbook, budget around RM 500++
*
with 500+ you should be able to get plenty of choices for mainstream drives, but a limited number of performance ones (the one i know is crucial m550 256gb).

the idea of getting a ssd is because of its speed, which is related to the bandwidth of ports (pata, sata i/ii/iii, pci-e).

imo the older ide (pata?) bandwidth might not be good enough. the better options are sata ii and above.

hi. i just bought a Samsung Evo 840 250GB. Btw, there is 1 software disk inside. Should I install the software? It seems uneccessary
*
i am not sure what is inside the disc, but you can just grab the latest version of samsung magician from their website. (imo that's all you ever need to maintain and optimize samsung ssd's)

yeah that. the move pissed some reviewers off.

this is how manufacturers that do not build their own parts do ssd business. unless they are committed to secure massive stock parts (i.e. willing to take the risks instead of channeling them to consumers), i see no point as a consumer should bear this kind of risks. (we have more choices and options these days)

if you're not greedy for performance, mainstream ssd's should work fine for you. (for instance, crucial m500/mx100, plextor m6s, samsung 840 evo) in fact any decent ssd's in the market will most probably do very well for you.

these mainstream drives have 3-year warranty.

I was comparing Intel 530 240GB and Samsung 840 Evo 250GB. Both price are around the same but Intel one got 5 years warranty. Does that means Intel is much reliable?
*
hm.. you should tell us earlier what you're comparing with.

yeah basically what TristanX said.

FYI, the CD contains two applications, that is Samsung Magician and their Data Migration Tool.  You don't really need the CD, since you can download these two from their official site. tongue.gif
*
oh thanks for the info lol! although i have the cd's, i never run them before.

these days we have little news about ssd development. perhaps now it's the stage that put all those talks into working products lol!

I made up my decision. Will get the Intel 530 series since it got more warranty compared to Samsung Evo series.
*
have fun with it biggrin.gif it's also good to take a look at the first posts for some best practices.

Yeah. I had read the article regarding the amount of writes affecting it's lifespan.

My primary job is to run virtual images in my machine. Guess it will not put too much burden.
*
yeah i do that too. with proper optimizations and better practices, there is no need to worry about the program/erase cycles.

just use it normally and there is a very high chance that your ssd will outlive your current system.

Well, this is somewhat interesting... hmm.gif

http://www.overclock.net/t/1507897/samsung...0#post_22818618

I don't know what's the cause but I think it has to do with the firmware... hmm.gif
*
wow. that's a nice find. older files will get terrible read speeds on 840 evo? that's really something new :/

downloaded the file bench utility and tested on my drive (samsung sm841):

Note that the 840 EVO SSDs are only affected by this issue. The 840/840 Pro/850 Pro are not affected. sweat.gif
*
yeah it seemed like it. what logic exactly can lead to something like old written files get slow speed while fresh ones are fast?

i have samsung 840 evo also. to think that i need to defrag a ssd to get back speed is kind of funny lol!

lol! a new firmware update is expected when news like this catch samsung's attention. (they are just about to push tlc-based ssd's to enterprise space lol)

.. and now i wonder if touch in linux can 'fix' the issue. (we use it to update access and mod time of files when necessary)

I have posted about it earlier, and it seems like Samsung decided to utilize an overly aggressive wear leveling algorithm in the firmware... sweat.gif
...which causes this problem. sweat.gif

The non-permanent solution to this problem is to defragment the SSD... sweat.gif
*
i have a first-hand experience about this right now biggrin.gif

you will feel that apps take ages to load.

spending gb's of writes later, everything is back to normal:

yeah many people are starting to send out complaints about this haha!

edit: apparently the degradation of this sort is not about anything else. i have 20% over-provisioning for these 840 evo, and they are still relatively empty. i rarely use this laptop also.

Just realized this was why recently windows of this laptop loaded much slower than ever. An app with 1s load time could become more than 10s.

The temp 'fix' helped. Lets see how fast samsung repond to this hehehe

Sorry, new people in the SSD world.

Why do you need to defrag the SSD to get back the speed? from my reading, SSD dont require maintenance like HDD would.
And from your previous replies, this is only affecting 840 EVO?  hmm.gif
*
you are right ssd's normally do not need that.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1507897/samsung...0#post_22818618

yes, this is samsung 840 evo specific. the temporary quick fix that works is disk defragmentation.

But Asus by default choose ScanDisk for laptop with SSD models...

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-AsusPr...ok.93176.0.html

Am considering Intel 530 Series 240GB or Sandisk Ultra II 240GB now...both are same price  rclxub.gif
*
there is no such things as compatibility based on brand. it's just asus appointed sandisk to produce oem ssd for them.

i have a g55 that i put a raid0 with a plextor m5m and a vertex 4. don't bother about thickness of ssd (7mm or 9.5mm) if you have a non-ultrabook laptop. both should fit.

between intel 530 and sandisk ultra ii, my choice will be intel 530. (it's personal preference)

oh. i think samsung will do something about it so just wait.

QUOTE(activexxx @ Sep 13 2014, 11:21 AM)
Yes. Mine is a ultrabook. Can fit for thickness 7mm. So, my final choice will be Intel 530

I plan to configure the SSD as my primary drive (C:). Is there any source where I can refer to for this setup? What RAID should I set?

Appreciate if other ppl can share their experience too.
*
uh? setting up raid needs 2 or more ssd's. can your laptop have 2x ssd?

also, do you really need raid?

QUOTE(pakji @ Sep 13 2014, 12:48 PM)
HDD IS STILL GOOD BUT VERY SLOW LOADING TAKE LONG TIME FOR GAME LOADING  sad.gif
i not rich
that why i bought 2x 1TB raid0 = game loading faster
HDD suitable storage for MUSIC+MOVIES+ETC MORE like that
i can buy HDD Big TB LIKE 4TB x 3 for storage
*
if you can afford large ssd's then why not?

Firstly i am like you, a consumer. I have no definite answers for your questions.

However i think that they will deliver something out (most probably a firmware fix to the issue) in the future. All we can do is wait for it.

For the impatient, there is this defrag fix. Although not perfect, it does work well. (At least to me and many others) its up to you to use it or not.

Im not sure if its possible to do rma with perfect drives.
