Lost Planet multiplayer demo heads to XBL

Capcom flier in Gears of War copies indicates new trial version of upcoming sci-fi shooter will appear on the Marketplace.

Gamers who picked up Epic Games' long-awaited futuristic shooter Gears of War yesterday might have been too eager to try out the curbstomp move on their friends to notice an advertisement for Capcom's Lost Planet: Extreme Condition in the package. The flier encourages gamers to "Check Out Xbox Live Marketplace For New Multiplayer Demo!"

But even if Gears of War owners noticed the flier and dutifully obeyed its command, they would have found no such demo on the Marketplace. As for when it would arrive, a Capcom representative told GameSpot, "We will be announcing more details on the multiplayer demo shortly, so please stay tuned."

Capcom first showed off the game's multiplayer with a demo at Leipzig Games Convention in July. That version of the demo featured four-on-four battles in one multiplayer game mode on a single map.

Give Thanks for Lost Planet Multiplayer Demo

And catch a new trailer in theaters

Today Capcom announced that a multiplayer demo for Lost Planet: Extreme Condition will be available on Xbox Live starting Thanksgiving Day, November 23. After you gather round the dinner table with family and friends and remember all that you have to be thankful for, you can gather round the television and frag the frickin' crap out of each other.

While Lost Planet takes place on a frozen planet, the multiplayer demo lets gamers participate in heated online matches in the Pirate Fortress stage with support for up to 16 players. The demo offers a choice of multiple weapons, robotic assault vehicles called Vital Suits, and four play modes: Elimination, Team Elimination, Post Grab, and Fugitive.

Following the demo's release on the 23rd, November 24 will be deemed "White Friday," as retailers launch a preorder program where early adopters will receive access to a special version of the demo with an additional multiplayer map called Dilapidation.

To get you psyched up for the demo, a 60-second cinematic trailer is being released in theaters nationwide beginning November 17. You can catch the trailer before several PG-13 and R-rated movies including Casino Royale through the rest of November. Capcom says its anticipated game is being previewed on over half the screens in America.

"The primary focus for Lost Planet has been on raising the bar on what we deliver to our fans, not only through the quality of the game itself but in its supplementary campaigns as well," said Charles Bellfield, VP of Marketing, Capcom. "In addition to an incredibly packed Collector's Edition, we are continuing to reward our most devoted fans with real, significant content that they can truly appreciate."

Lost Planet eclipsing PCs in June, sequel possible

QUOTE
Last night at its Gamers Day San Francisco, Capcom showed off the PC version Lost Planet to a gathering of the game press. It also announced the game would go on sale in North America fairly soon--this coming June--for the retail price of $39.99. Like the 360 version, it will be rated T for Teen.

Since it was originally touted as an Xbox 360 exclusive, Lost Planet's arrival on the PC has irked platform partisans. Capcom's message to them is simple: Get used to it. At the event, the company unveiled its "Internal Framework," a development system which will allow a single game to be developed for multiple platforms simultaneously from the get-go. "We're definitely going to start taking the tack of putting out titles out on multiple platforms," Jack Symon, Capcom's director of brand marketing, told GameSpot.

When asked about the possibility of Lost Planet coming to the PlayStation 3, Symon was vague. "I do think you are going to see announcements going forward with a multiplatform strategy," he said. He was similarly cagey when queried point-blank about a Lost Planet sequel. "Lost Planet performed incredibly well on the 360, and we're excited to put it out on the PC platform," said Symon, "We're definitely proud to have a new IP, and there will be more on Lost Planet for sure."

Symon also said that, like the 360 version, the PC Lost Planet will get content updates that can be downloaded via the Web. However, he would not comment on any pricing or timing.
