Can you name me a Haswell ULX CPU model?  whistling.gif
Launch does not mean the full product range is available right away.
Another issues are the components. e.g RAM. Currently, iinm, all the Haswell laptop CPU only support DDR3L and LPDDR3 (there is a shortage of supply there).

macbook air... starting from RM2999

If you are not in a hurry, wait for Haswell ultrabook. Should be in the market within 2-3 months from Asus/Lenovo/HP.
*
i look around no haswell laptop yet in the market except MacBook Air, but i doubt they can wait or not...

QUOTE(arc x @ Aug 6 2013, 11:41 AM)
For lady , build quality , nice design , portable , battery life , I would recommend Asus zenbook and Samsung series 7 ultra or even series 9 .
*
i already have the zenbook prime (non touch version) in hand, everything is very nice already but still not so perfect built quality (because i also have a Macbook Air which raise the par higher lol, sorry for that)...

reach across the reviews got another serious contender beside zenbook prime and samsung ultra 7/9 which is Sony VAIO Pro 11/13 but i not feel the laptop with my hands and eyes yet... anyone have review of it...

but the following models will burst the 2500-3300 budget (since is a gift so budget range can wide abit)
1. zenbook prime (is really good windows ultrrabook but matte screen make it look like dull screen)
2. samsung ultra 7/9 (burst the budget, yet the brand not so convincing to the purchaser)
3. Sony VAIO Pro 11/13 (burst the budget also, and not yet see the actual product is how)

so let me define the criteria again and hope all can comment
1. a gift to my fren wife (birthday present - date due already lol)
2. laptop needed take to work (excel, powerpoint, words), carry everyday so weight is the most important factor for consideration
3. other usage include little internet, movie, thats all..
4. budget SGD$ 1k-1.3k (RM2500-3300, higher budget can consider also but he will very pain lol)
5. nice built quality
6. not necessary ultrabook, but weight is most important concern (max up to 1.5kg-1.6kg)
7. not too small screen (13 and above)

TQ!

Depends on which zenbook u re using , some zenbook in lower class .
Sony Vaio Pro isnt released here so soon .

1)There are zenbook with glossy IPS screen . Blew Mac Air screen away easily .
2)This brand is so famous in EUROPE area , everyone is using it . Popularity is bad yet in eastern country especially in Notebook category , thats the reason y samsung only export so limited version of laptops over here . And limited ammount (stock) too.
3)Vaio pro havent release yet . Not even reveal specific specs . (only part of it)

Since u say cheaper the better , go for zenbook and look for Glossy IPS .
*
Thanks for the insight, truly opened my eyes.

1. Mine Zenbook Prime is UX31A with Intel Core i5-3317U 1.7 GHz, thou is IPS, FHD and super bright, the matte screen really downgrade the screen by a lot... and in windows many things need to be zoom as the windows not optimised FHD pixel screen yet

2. I see. I will take note more on this when i have the chance... anyway the brand, outlook and keyboard quality still can improve alot i think.

3. No wonder.

QUOTE(arc x @ Aug 6 2013, 12:41 PM)
One more point , even my series 7 ultra touch reaches 1.6kg ,what do u expect the weight of a conventional notebook (not ultrabook) ?? 1.6kg ?? no way .

Only choice for u is ultrabooks or mac air bro smile.gif
*
your laptop performance so geng, so the weight is a bit higher lor.... on paper we say 1.5 /1.7 /1.9kg, but actual life the a hundred grams contribute to more muscle to be trained only lor....
Anyway my current warrior on road only 1.08kg

QUOTE(nexus2238 @ Aug 6 2013, 12:49 PM)
Samsung 7 Ultra is within budget?  hmm.gif
Series 7 Ultra, i5-3337U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM2999[JBL][1.46kg], 4GB, W8

Other than the usual suspect that you know of, can consider these models that come into market recently:
HP
Split x2, i5-3339Y + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1366x768;touch)@RM2899, 4GB, W8

Lenovo
ThinkPad Twist S230U, i5-3317U + Intel HD4000 + 24GB mSATA + 500GB +(1366x768, IPS touch)@RM3408(1.58kg), 4GB, W8P, 1 yr warranty

Thanks you, i will look at it one by one!

Sorry for not reading the 1st post on format.

But there is no need to compute the price. As far as price is concerned, the cheaper the better. Cheap here is an indicator already. Plus, I have already looked at all the suggested laptops. The only thing I question is how solid the laptop is overall especially the ventilation. BIG no for noisy and hot laptops.

Experience with bunch of laptops:
Dell Inspiron - Keyboard replacement x2
Toshiba Satellite - Overheat to cook an egg
Dell Vostro - board burnt in 7 months
Dell InspironZ - the screen looks like manufactured flaw. Looking for the side, the screen is not flat but with tiny waves of coating( imagine flawed tinting)
Lenovo Thinkpad T430 - lousy screen and bad batteries. Overall the best laptop in terms of engineering quality. Quiet, cool, and super solid but comes with a price.

I have never tried Taiwanese brands. So I am here to look for suggestions or experience in owning them.
Decided to either take a M processor or MQ processor. Any recommendations?

Vostro has the M I think.
*
time for you to try business / corporate line up laptops, i agree dell latitude / precision series or lenovo thinkpad series (those expensive one) will have better quality than most consumers laptops in the market now...

of you have one more alternative for consumer line up ... which is apple... it has overall best keyboard, best touchpad, overall best built quality, best overall battery life... if you still want run windows, you can always bootcamp and install windows in it... the cons is the price tag and the screen not yet retina yet, but its TN panel screen already very good and even beats many so-called IPS screens in the market (unless 15" at RM 6799 with outdated ivy bridge processor)

if not for work... we actually do not need to rely on windows that much (compare with 10 years ago)... even for architecture student, they can actually adapt mac earlier...

just for positive consideration and discussion, i sad at market no one actually making good quality laptops...

QUOTE(Xincaberrie @ Aug 15 2013, 12:54 PM)
Hope you don't mind a newbie question, but can you explain the difference to me between msata, sata ll, and ssd in a notebook? Also, what is ubuntu? I'm guessing msata is when a notebook has a HDD (like 500gb or 1Tb),  and just a tiny bit of ssd (8gb, 24gb, or 32gb) to cache files for faster start up.  Is this also known as a hybrid drive, like in the new Sony Fit14? Does it make the performance of a notebook almost as fast as a full ssd one?

Okay, I'm trying this again since the only recommendation I got earlier was for heavy gaming laptops, and that's not what I'm really going for. I want a fast, sleek, not too heavy and bulky multimedia laptop, good performance but no need for overkill, as I'm not a heavy gamer.

1. Preferred brand : Apple, Dell, Lenovo, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba (can consider Acer and Asus too)
2. Budget: Range between RM2800 to RM3300, if necessary maximum budget RM3800.
3. Usage: office work, streaming movies on youtube, torrenting, playing HD videos and some games like simcity.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14 or 15 inch; good display that is not too reflective; reasonably good sound for playing music is appreciated. Last but not least, a good keyboard and trackpad. No overheating problems. Nice to have backlit keyboard but not a must.
*
Since you mentioned Apple, I will suggest Apple Mackbook Air 13" 128GB, upgrade to 8GB ram (RM 3,639.00)

Spec (which doesnt meant everything imo)
Intel Core i5-4250U 1.3 GHz,
Apple PCI-e based SSD SM0128F, 128 GB (faster than most market SATA based SSD),
13.3 inch 16:10, 1440x900 pixel, TN LED, glossy: yes
Intel HD Graphics 5000,
wifi 802.11ac (next generation WiFi, same range with 802.11n, but at short range, speed is 3X of 802.11n, but need buy 802.11ac router)
1.35 kg Power Supply: 0.2 kg (beri light and you will not even feel its at your backpack)

What is more important and suits you is that its light, its fast, its beautiful, best keyboard and touchpad in the market, backlit keyboard also. not forgeting it is 12 hours battery life (whole day battery life)

and

it fits to the green envelope

Wah, thank you sifus for providing such detailed and useful information! Feels very educational reading all your posts.  laugh.gif

Ok, I will research a bit more about the Thinkpad Edge and Thinkpad. Frankly never thought of these models, I only hear people talking about Lenovo's Y series notebooks nowadays. I like the Macbook Air design very much, but it only has a 13" screen, and I want to try a bigger screen as I had lived with a 13" Fujitsu laptop for over 7 years until it fell apart recently. Lol.

Just an observation - it seems like Samsung, Sony and Toshiba are not very popular notebook brands, at least not here in this forum. Not many recommendations.
*
samsung = very popular in europe
sony = last time very popular
Toshiba = standing behing apple, asus, lenovo, still got play to stand meh....

please dont compare old age 13" low res and yellowish laptop with 2013 13" macbook air.. cannot compare la...

Dell has the best warranty support in Malaysia, upgrade to 3 years on site for RM300, best peace of mind for students smile.gif (anything go wrong with hardware, give Dell a call, technician will go to your place to fix it next business day)
*
agree... when your dell falls apart (trust me it will), at least they will come repair it for you, no need you to take back to service center fix and wait and blah blah blah, same day can settle, but you must "smart" enough to do the pre diagnosis and tell them which part is fails, then they will bring the part to you and repair straight away, be it hard disk, screen, motherboard, keyboard, touchpad etc...

QUOTE(PF T.J. @ Aug 15 2013, 05:50 PM)
its better to go for a performance notebook (rather than ultrabook) for your course; there is a high chance that you will need it:
14"
Lenovo
Y410p, i7-4700MQ + GT750M(GDDR5)@RM2899, 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, 120w psu, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty
15.6:
Lenovo Y510p, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT750M(GDDR5) + (1920x1080)@RM3099[2.7kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8, red backlit, swappable ODD, 120w psu, 2 yrs

The Y410p should be able to squeeze out 4 hours battery life if used sparingly nod.gif

Yes, ultrabooks are thin and has much less space for proper heat dissipation..
*
not to mention proper ultrabook use low power processor and integrated graphics, if doesnot do intensive things it still can be very cool...

For your budget, you can afford these Apple:
MacBookAir 13", i5-4250U + Intel HD5000 + 128GB SSD + (1440x900)@RM3299[1.35kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookAir 13", i5-4250U + Intel HD5000 + 256GB SSD + (1440x900)@RM3899[1.35kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookPro 13", i5-3210M + Intel HD4000 + (1280x800)@RM3699[2.06kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, Mac OSX

For AutoCAD usage, either you can get the OSX compatible version of AutoCAD, or you probably need to get a copy of Windows OS and use bootcamp to dual boot the MacBook.

And if you do any 3D CAD, Intel HD4000 or HD5000 is a little bit weak (can work, just slow).
*
i agree... just 90% and above de person use autocad in 2D. for 3D i think they have others more better software option which i believe he will mention it here

Hi all, sorry to disturbing everyone again but I have some question here..
err...
I going to study Engineering course soon...I had check through the internet and they are advising me
1)processor must be fast(2Ghz or above)
2)Ram should be higher(6GB++)
3)Battery life have to about 5 hours..(Well,this is one of the problem,so far as I know, for most kind of laptop with fast processor, its battery will not last long, around 2to 3 hour at most right?..haiz cry.gif )
So,currently, any suggestion laptop for me?hopefully not so expensive... smile.gif
And sometimes I play game too tongue.gif (but this one is optional  biggrin.gif ) hehe..

thanks all!!
*
processor fast or not, not depends purely on GhZ anymore... its depends on which generation and model of processor you getting... for your requirement i think you need core i7, 8gb, most probably lenovo 510p series suits you... battery will be out of range and pity short....

ok.....thanks for your suggestion...I will have a deep look on these laptop...and how about their battery life?
I know the battery life is depend on our usage but if for normal task(surfing web + listening music + wording)?
btw, I had see your signature below which provided some link...and I just want to ask again, when comes to reliably(which mean last longing for me),brand doesn't really matter?
*
your choice is to get lenovo y410p, that is the best bang for a student, but sadly the battery wont last to 5 hours ask you required...

if you need long battery life, then buy those thin ultrabook (>4 hours battery).... or macbook air (12 hours battery)

i believe civil engineering no need so powderful laptop... and laptop nowadays is quite powerful compared to years ago... if you need extra performance, the laptop is more to entertainment tools for you (gaming, torrent etc....)

1. Preferred Brand - Any
2. Budget - up to 5k
3. Usage - business presentations / software programming
4. 12" and above, lightweight and good battery life.
5. Need windows only unfortunately.

Appreciate all your recommendations based on the above spec, I do a lot of presentations and some amount of php and .net programming. Need something lightweight to travel. Thanks.
*
if use typing alot (programing).... then the keyboard quality is very important to you....
lightweight to travel = ultrabook or laptopt that less than 1.6kg
do a lot of presentation = need connectivity to hdmi / vga

i think you need those samsung series 7/9 (light weight/windows) or macbook air (lightweight / good keyboard / but need bootcamp windows)

Bro thanks, yes I was holding out till now for a haswell, but time getting a bit short and I can't wait till Oct. let me do one research on bootcamp for the Mac. Seems like a lot of people are recommending it.
*
if you a bit of tech person (you do program i'm sure you do), then you will be fine of buying a mac and boot camp it... some windows developers also doing that, coz mac provides all things they required the most (nice keyboard (good travel distance and feedback)), nice built quality etc...

actually they say the non retina macbook pro has the best keyboard (some of the programmers claimed it) because of longer travel distance of the typing and better feedback... all thinner macbooks (macbook air / retina macbook pro) have shallower travel feedback, some say it is better, some say not... anyway it is very good already...

Excuse me, want to tumpang other posts:
So will the Thinkpad T430/T430u and Thinkpad Edge 431, haswell upgrades be coming out in October this year too? What do you think?
It all sounds great ie. get a cheaper laptop and then upgrade the ram and ssd later. However, most resellers I spoke to do not offer this service. They claim it's hard to find ssd and it will void the warranty, so they are not willing to do it. Can recommend some shops or resellers in Digital Mall/Sunway Pyramid that will do this ssd upgrade service when you buy their notebooks? Or even if you don't buy their notebooks (eg. let's say you buy a Dell online)?
*
the problem with cheaper laptops is the built quality, keyboard, screen and touchpad which cannot be changed whatever you do... the ventilation design need to be considered too, what if you buy very powderful specs but quality is no good, keyboard supbar, low reso screen, weird touchpad etc...
