[WTA] Recommendation on laptop for Business/Work

Preferred Brand: Any brand doesn't matter.
Budget: < RM2500
Usage: Absolutely no gaming, more on business/development/r&d
Preferred laptop/screen size: 15 is preferred by 14 is fine (as i also watch a lot of movies biggrin.gif )

I've recently dropped my laptop vertically (side drop) from roughly 2 meter high. Result in some cracks on the side and cover popped from the bottom.
Critical parts are basically functional and doesn't seem to have any issue after i fixed the crack by hand (pop them back in)
Before this the side already cracked a bit somehow (idk why) with this drop issue is much imminent now.

I worry it may not last long so i am now planning on "laptop hunting"
OH FYI i am currently using Acer 5755G (i7 2630, GT540M, 8GB, 750GB 5400RPM)
Overall is fine and very satisfying beside the very very bad over heat issue since i bought it and the slow 5400RPM HDD

Okay anyway, i am looking for a new laptop for use of business/work only as i don't play games not even flash games/fb games and such.
I do occasionally play DOTA/CS LAN with friends but that isn't my concern as i believe intel hd 4000 can handle those quite well.

I do need a basic 8GB RAM as i do quite a lot of programming (Java/C#/PHP) with lot of IDE/Compiler going on at the same times. I also do virtualization like VMWare, Vbox etc so RAM is quite a depending for me.

I also need a quite fast Processor as i need smooth processing between to many tasks/multitasking.
I am currently using i7 2630QM and it is considered quite smooth so anything that up to par with this one or faster is preferred.

I prefer no pre-installed O/S if possible since i got my own retail multi-installation Win7 Ultimate license. And i also boot linux based O/S sometimes.

As for graphic card, the built in Intel HD should be fine for me since i do not play games.

Edit: And please don't recommend me laptop that easily overheat, my current laptop simply overheat for nothing. No dust or anything, i applied cooler master thermal paste as well. Is the laptop issue not user issue.

*I planing to buy in 2 months (so my diploma course end by then) or so as my current laptop still working, i am doing research for now*

pre-thanks for any recommendation that may be coming.

Man, the Acer survive a 2m vertical drop. That's very good  thumbup.gif

Can see that you need lots of RAM, especially if you run virtualisation. 8G stick is ~ RM200 now. You could upgrade after market, normally will not void hardware warranty.
The Haswell CPU is still not flooding the market yet. So currently most laptop with i7 are Ivy Bridge.
Yes, you don't need discrete GPU for your usage.
if 14" and 15" are displaying the same resolution (1366x768), you are looking at the same image, just slightly bigger smile.gif
But you budget is kind of tight to go for a proper "business class" laptop.
And for consumer class laptop, normally models spec with i7 CPU also come with some sort of Nvidia / AMD GPU  tongue.gif

Acer
V3-571G-73614G1T, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT640M@RM2699[2.6kg], 4GB, 1TB, W7HP
V3-571G-736b8G1T, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT730M(DDR3) + (1920x1080 IPS) @RM2899[2.6kg], 8GB, 1TB, W8

Dell
Inspiron 15R, i7-3612QM +AMD HD7670M@RM2599[2.74kg], 4GB, 1TB(5400rpm), W8

Lenovo
Ideapad Z580, i7-3612QM + Nvidia GT640M@RM2299, 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), freeDOS, white (this one tick all your boxes, but you need to look hard for it, since it is a older model, not many re-sellers have stock)

Prices are RSP, negotiable.
Lots of smoothness in user experience actually is dictated by the disc access speed. You may want to consider going for SSD (128G ~ RM300, 256G ~ RM600) to replace the HDD.

It's not really 2m kinda like 1.5m and it's in a non-protective school bag so it can considered as direct drop as i can hear the sound of "pop" upon impact on solid floor

Anyway thanks much for the suggestion, i am wondering about the Acer you suggested will they like very bad in cooling?
My current one is very very bad it can goes up to 100C for just browsing on chrome or checking email using IE. It only stay 55~65C when everything is closed and in idle desktop mode.

That Lenovo seem nice though considered the specs and price

Your Acer seems to be with you for some time already.
And you does not sounds like someone who has ever clean their laptop laugh.gif
When dust clog up the air inlet/outlet vent and the internal fan, the abilities of the laptop to dissipate heat is compromised, which leads to bad temp. You should periodically (at least once every 1/2 year  hmm.gif ) clean all these off dust properly.
100C is really bad.
Your Acer is really amazing being able to survive for so long in such high temp laugh.gif

But the Acer V3 that I listed earlier, with the i7, could get a bit warm.

see here for owner's view on the spec with IPS panel  thumbup.gif

Yes, the Lenovo Z580 is the cheapest laptop with i7 quad core in Malaysia, if you could still find it smile.gif

it did, IIRC i bought it since July 2011
and lol how could you tell by that
i did clean my laptop every 2/3 semester
the first time i took this particular model of i took some pictures =3 https://www.facebook.com/johnlth93/media_se...60675645&type=3

IPS is cool and so does FHD but 1 thing i dun like about FHD is that the desktop become so small with the default 100% view

then maybe you should try re-paste thermal paste. But that's moot now since it is holding to life by a thin thread  sweat.gif

Since you know the "default 100% view", then you must know how to change it easily right? smile.gif
*
Truth, kinda pointless d haha

Yes i do, but that will cause some sort of issue with some application (app layout will mess up) if you change to 125% or something.
I do like FHD, it's cool. It just so many pixels and stuffs became so small by default blush.gif
i got bad eye sight blush.gif

HD+ resolution on a 17", won't strain eyes at all smile.gif
