Not much Haswell spec laptop in the market yet. If you really want Haswell, wait for 2 more months.
Among the models listed previously, only PRO45VJ and ThinkPad Edge E430 are black.

A45VS
K46CB
Z400 touch

are good choices.

Some of the models in 12" range only spec with mini-HDMI port and most probably don't have VGA port. So your mum need to see what type of projector she use and make sure she has the appropriate adapter flex.gif
She can either go for hybrid or traditional laptop form factor.

Satellite L40-AS109Xb/G/W, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[Onkyo], 4GB, 750GB, 3 years local warranty; colors: Blue/gold/white
Satellite L50-A100X/XW, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[Onkyo], 4GB, 750GB, W8SL; 3 years local warranty; colors:silver/white

err ... 14" vs 15"? tongue.gif
Joke aside, the L50 use the i5 M CPU, which is more powerful than the i5 ULV CPU in L40, but drain more power.
Also the L50 keyboard has dedicated numpad key.
Otherwise, both models are similar hmm.gif

Vostro - lighter, the i3 M is slightly more powerful than the i3 ULV in Inspiron 14 (also drain the 48Whr battery faster tongue.gif )
Insprion 14 - more frugal power usage, can opt for 6 cell 65Whr battery for long battery running time (standard spec is 40Whr, but since it is using i3 ULV, still run longer than the Vostro 5460 with i3 M), has 2 RAM slot easier to increase RAM (Vostro 5460 only 1 RAM slot).

But one of your main criteria is good / long warranty support (3 years to cover for your sis study?). If you go for Vostro 5460, may not have budget left to extend warranty (defeat the purpose of going with Dell tongue.gif )

One more thing, for budget laptop like these, the profit margin for brands are not that high, expect on ~ 10% discount from list price if you negotiate good smile.gif (Those RM4-5k laptop may get some extremely good deal if negotiate hard enough laugh.gif )
*
That's what I thought too..discount won't be much for low budget. May not opt for 3 years warranty also(extra cost), maybe go for accidental dmg. sweat.gif

Now looking in terms of performance (multi task, not slowed down/lagging if too much task), battery usage, portability.

Inspiron 14 - i3U@1.8GHz, 2gb RAM, 4-cell, slight heavier

Vostro - i3M@2.5GHz, 4gb RAM, 3-cell, thin/lighter

Like you say, vostro processor slightly more powerful but drain batt faster...hmm.gif

How many hours can the battery last with normal usage for both laptop?

hihi xD
so the i5 in the L50 is much powerful and the L50 also boasts a numpad. What makes the L40 being priced the same as the L50 then? portability factor only?

Go for the long warranty. Normal warranty don't cover accidental damage, but unless your sis is really hamfist (like spilling drink all over, drop the laptop to the floor ... , short accidental coverage (1 year) is not worth it, and long accidental coverage is more expensive tongue.gif (just ask her to TLC the laptop lah)

If your sis multi-task a lot, more RAM is essential. 4G stick is around RM100 now, 8G stick ~ RM200. If you opt for Inspiron 14, you could buy after-market and slot 1 right in. For Vostro 5460, you need to discard the 4G stick and put in a 8G stick.

Battery running time is 3-4 hours for both model normal usage, Inspiron 14 run slightly longer.

For student that is tight on budget and dread without laptop at critical time, good / long warranty support is very important smile.gif When she have more money, then can upgrade RAM, or even SSD later on.

budget: around 1.5-1.7k( will add on 300 for a 128gb ssd)
usage: web surfing, movie, light photoshop
screen: 14"
brand: any except acer

I was originally looking for laptops which comes with a 32gb msata ssd. but the cheapest one cost about 2k.

So i was wondering whether i should take that or should i get a cheaper laptop and spend 300 bucks on ssd, then switch out the odd?

You mean why ULV CPU is more expensive? It's actually more difficult for Intel to yield chips that can run in low TDP, ie. if a chip can't be run at low TDP (say 17W), Intel can still sell it as normal TDP (35W) M CPU.

How about colour? If you prefer plain, the silver in L50 is plain enough, the Blue or Gold in L40 is louder (of course there is white for both models laugh.gif )
Go out and look at the real thing to decide. Carry it, for example, sometime a few 100g here and there could tip the scale smile.gif

1. Preferred Brand: Apple, Lenovo or Asus. Doesn't really matter
2. Budget: <Rm4k
3. Usage: Never owned a laptop before but I think I'll need one for university (planning to twin for 2 years) So I'll need something that can...:
...Tahan lama (at least 4 years of abuse)
...Easy to carry around and not an eyesor
...Able to process DSLR RAW files via Lightroom at decent speeds
...MUST be able to play Dota 2, SC2, CS GO and D3 at medium to low settings with respectable FPS. Will only be playing casual games, so high end graphics cards are not needed.
...Good battery life

4. Preferred laptop/screen size 13 inch

Actually I'm just doing this to get some models in mind, will most likely only purchase only later in the year when I enter uni and get a feel of what I really need for my course (Nothing to do with graphic design or IT)

Right now I'm thinking of the 2013 MacBook air 2013 128GB SSD along with the i7 upgrade. Asus' UX32VD looks impressive, but then again, reviews say the battery life isn't the best, and the 620M might not have that large an advantage over the Apple.

I don't mind heavier laptops as well. My sisters 2010/11 MBP is probably the heaviest I would want in a laptop. Seems like the windows alternative to the MBP (aluminium Chassis) are all extinct for some reason..

S56CB is way over your budget smile.gif And don't waste your limited budget on touch feature tongue.gif
Learn to compromise and priorities when you are tight icon_rolleyes.gif

Accounting - need to punch numbers a lot, so 15" is good since it has dedicated numpad.
Easy to carry around - 15" is normally not light.
Survive for 4 years - Nobody / no brands can "guarantee" you that tongue.gif The best you can do is to get a laptop with good warranty support for a long time. Dell Malaysia offer next biz day on site warranty, extend from standard 1 year to 3 years cost ~ RM300, good for students who can't afford laptop to die at critical moment.

Dell
Inspiron 15, i3-3227U + Intel HD4000@RM1299[2.25kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell, Linux; W8SL@RM1399

Price is RSP, negotiable.
Negotiate hard to get a 6 cell (65Whr) battery instead of the spec 4 cell (40Whr) battery, and running time on battery life will be pretty good.
As mentioned, extend warranty to 3 years for ~ RM300.
All in, will be within your budget.

You can get the lowest spec MBP 13 with that budget. It's being refreshed with Haswell and Intel HD5000 (the IGPU is decent enough, better than GT710M laugh.gif )MBA or MBP, you probably has to run bootcamp or virtual machine in order to run your games.
Nobody can tell how long a laptop will last, depends on luck and TLC smile.gif
