TJ, what's the best speakers that you come across in current gen of laptops so far?
The Onkyo did not do much for me (too subtle I think for my peasant ears tongue.gif )
I like the JBL in Dell XPS and Lenovo Y.
The Harmon Kardon in HP also appeal to me  hmm.gif
*
HP got harman/kardon? hmm.gif

based on what I've tried so far, the harman/kardon speakers in high end Toshiba notebooks are always very impressive, even without a subwoofer thumbup.gif
Review has it that the JBL speakers in Dell XPS are good too, but too bad no more jor... same goes to the Bang & Olufsen in the Asus NX90.
Not too sure about the Dyaudio on MSI units but should be good~
Forget about Klipsch and Beats laugh.gif

I have a feeling Onkyo speakers are not good as well since even Illegear users are complaining about too much treble iirc hmm.gif

At the end of the day, I guess it doesn't matter also la... buy a harman/kardon soundstick III or a JBL creature and all the in-built speaker problems are settled tongue.gif tongue.gif

you are right. I was blur already about the Harman Kardon. It's in the Toshiba. Even the one in the small netbook (my previous maid from Philippine bought a netbook before she went home) was better than the speakers in my Thinkpad T420  laugh.gif

Yes, Dyaudio on MSI is also good. Certain MSI model also has gold-coated audio out port, those audio buff particularly like it  hmm.gif
*
Ahh, you are probably referring to the Toshiba NB520 netbook (10.1")... the speakers on that thing is really kick@ss man, it can easily pawn any 14/15" notebooks with normal speakers... hell its even better than my M14x's Klipsch LOL tongue.gif

Looks like newer Samsung models have JBL speakers already... but since they are in ultrabooks, not really sure whether they are good or not... maybe you can try them out when you have the chance sifu brows.gif
Samsung 7 series ultra and 7 Book, seemed pretty okay for the price... direct competitors to the XPS13 apart from warranty

1. Preferred Brand: Any
2. Budget: Below 2k (If there are good choices I would increase my budget)
3. Usage: Assignments (business student), play games like the Sims 3(but rarely play unless I have much free time), light video editing
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14"
5. light and portable, nice battery life
Thank you very much smile.gif

Lenovo Z400, i5-3230M + Nvidia GT740M@RM2099, 4GB, 1TB, W8; 2 years warranty; colors: chocolate

Can consider this one as well, it has a weaker CPU, but offers much longer battery life; and not to mention 3 years local limited warranty and color picks brows.gif

Toshiba Satellite L40-AS109Xb/G/W, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT740M@RM2199[Onkyo], 4GB, 750GB, 3 years local warranty; colors: Blue/gold/white

You will get better specs if you opt for a 14" notebook:

Lenovo Y400, i7-3630QM + Nvidia GT750M@RM2499, 4GB, 500GB, FreeDOS, 120wPSU, swappable ODD, 2 years warranty

Hard to say mate, don't even know whether there will be any replacement for it hmm.gif
But you can try and wait for Haswell, which should be here in perhaps a month or two, in transitions

So far there is one already:
15.6"
Asus S551-LB, i5-4200U + Nvidia GT740M + (1366x767; touch)@RM2699, 4GB, 750GB, W8
Courtesy of devour laugh.gif

*not really sure its a replacement since its price range is higher and come with touchscreen summore

Hi Sifu, I read some news from CNet regarding the Haswell Processors that less battery hunger than the current one? So should we hold off to buy new laptop if we are not urgent on it?
*
Yeah, that is true. But the lower power consumption is only applicable (or should we say more significant) for certain models only. Haswell processors are taylor-ed more with ultrabooks in mind nod.gif
If you are going for a performance (gaming) notebook, then there's is no real need in getting a Haswell-powered one, especially so if you cannot wait.

Can read here for more details: http://tanji.me/mobile-computing/intels-4t...essors-haswell/

1. Preferred Brand : Any will do. Quality made is prefered
2. Budget : RM 2k - 2.5k
3. Usage : Internet and video
4. Preferred laptop/screen size : 11 - 14
5. Prefer longer battery life, lightweight and slim.

Btw is HDD + mSATA cache better deal than just purely running on SSD? Because I'm sure performance of hybird (HDD+mSATA) wouldn't be as bad as just running one HDD 5400rpm right?

Second thing, if the slim factor doesn't have RJ45 LAN PORT, will a normal USB > LAN dongle work perfectly and stable? Because there are times I need LAN port for router setting adjustment.

Thank you
*
How about these?
11.6"
Acer
P3-131-21292G06, Pentium 2129Y + Intel HD + 60GB SSD + (1366x768 IPS;touch)@RM1799, 2GB, W8
P3-171-3322Y2G06, i3-3322y + Intel HD + 60GB SSD + (1366x768 IPS;touch)@RM1999, 2GB, W8

Lenovo
Yoga 11s, i3-3229Y + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD + (1366x768, IPS touch)@RM2599, 4GB, W8, 2 years; colors: grey/orange

14"
Toshiba Satellite U940-1001X, i5-3317U + Nvidia GT630M + (32GB mSATA + 640GB HDD)@RM2349[1.7kg], 4GB, W8SL, backlit keyboard, 3 years local warranty (1st year on-site); color: Light blue

- Full SSD is always better and more consistent. Probably last longer too. But they are of course, more expensive
- The Toshiba has an Ethernet port

I thought I was sold with the Y500 dual graphic cards (GT750M) but I'm not sure if there are better options (like MSI, probably) which would offer better fps at higher graphic settings. I don't know much about graphic cards and benchmarking and such so I hope you guys can give me options before I buy next month. I would also prefer that it be robust/sturdy but my main concern would be towards gameplay experience. Thanks in advance, I hope to hear from you soon.

GT750M SLI is still better when it comes to gaming, for your current budget, that is icon_rolleyes.gif

You mean Lenovo Y510? Still not in MY, right? I've been game-starved for 6 months already and I'm beginning to loose my mind hahaha

Edit: Just read somewhere: "additional GPU = SLI" ... again, I'm a noob when it comes to specifications. So go for Y500?

Both the Lenovo Y500 and Y510p comes with GT750M right?
Only main difference is the CPU-generation and also Nvidia Optimus (iinm)
It all depends on whether you can wait or not I guess laugh.gif

Thanks for the response and the quotations. If I wait another month (which at this point, I can't lol) I could probably add 2K RM more to the budget but I guess I will go with the Y500 SLI coz they've been releasing a lot of updates in the games I play and each day that pass, I miss a lot of stuff. Hoping to find a reseller as well with freebies  rclxm9.gif

Don't know whether the GT750M SLI can handle GTA5 or not brows.gif
haha, anyways ,just teasing!
Buy when you need, wait if you can!
Since you cannot wait already, just go for the best pick at the moment, which is undoubtedly the Y500 nod.gif

As for freebies, they are not worth it, ask for more discounts instead icon_rolleyes.gif
Can look for devour, hikari85 and storm88 for Lenovo units

Does this come with Windows 7 model? Because no touchscreen using W8 is painful.

Its not that hard to use la to be honest haha, just have to memorize the shortcut keys icon_rolleyes.gif

wow, that looks very promising... definately what i'm looking for...

but i have a few questions
1) is the warranty international? (as in i can go to australia, india, china, japan and still claim the warranty)
2) is the cooling system okay? (does it heat up a lot)
3) are you a seller?

I'll also be doing some googling job on the model to read more, but appreciate if sifus and kind people to give opinion on this... smile.gif
*
More details on the Y series here: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2851949
Its a very comprehensive thread by ytlay sifu, I'm sure you will find eveything there icon_rolleyes.gif

As for international warranty coverage, I'm not so sure anymore, and I didn't manage to find much info from their website, pretty confusing.. Better check with sellers or Lenovo itself nod.gif

As for the heat, the notebook will get hot since it packs quite a lot of punch laugh.gif Just make sure you clean the fans regularly nod.gif
And if you are still worried, replace the HDD with an SSD, that will reduce heat by abit~
