Hi All, I am looking for a laptop for my cousin who is just entering University, taking accounting course.

1. Preferred Brand: Any (Prefer Dell of its good after sales service, mainly is because do not want my cousin to bug me if she face any problem with the laptop.. @@)
2. Budget: +/- RM1500
3. Usage: For accounting degree student, light web surfing, etc.
4. Preferred laptop/screen size: 14/15 inch
*
Your cousin will appreciate the dedicated numpad in the 15".
Inspiron 15, i3-3217U + HD4000@RM1299, 4GB, 500GB, Linux; W8SL@RM1449

If she think 15" is too heavy and go with 14", then sooner or later she will need to buy external numpad to key in number laugh.gif
Inspiron 14-3421, i3-3217U + Intel HD4000@RM1399[1.99kg], Win8SL, 2GB, 500GB(5400rpm), 4-cell; Linux@ RM1299
Inspiron 14-3437, i3-4010U + Intel HD4400@RM1399[1.99kg], Ubuntu, 4GB, 750GB(5400rpm), 4-cell; W8SL@RM1549

If she opt for the Linux spec, she could get cheap and legal Win OS from her school.
Extend warranty from standard 1 year to 2 year for ~ RM100, to 3 years for ~ RM300. (must do, otherwise defeat the purpose of going with Dell tongue.gif )
Price is RSP, negotiable.

What's the difference between freeDOS and windows 8 anyway? And why is windows 8 more expansive?

Pandera already explained. FreeDOS - no OS, you have to install OS yourself. Of course models with W8 is more expensive, Billy has to get his money somewhere, you know laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi to all d sifus,

I plan to buy a laptop which have
i)very presentable outlook
ii)very gd FHD IPS display for photo editting,14" & 15" onli
iii)i7 quad core for photo & video redering,SSD for fast operating
iv)very gd audio quality
v)gd battery life

1. Preferred Brand - Any but MBP if possible, now looking @ Asus Zenbook,HP Envy Spectre,Dell XPS
2. Budget - Around Rm4k
3. Usage - Photo Editting & Video Rendering,Some Heavy Gaming
4. Preferred laptop/screen size - 14" to 15" Onli

Hopefully can get suggestion from u all, thx.

thx for suggestion,animore other option?
as i prefer very presentable laptop...
which i think currently onli d hp envy spectre meets my expectation, den xps which i heard quite abit problem, follow by zenbook...

when hp,dell, asus & maybe sony will be having their new range?
as if not mistaken, dell xps, asus zenbook & hp envy spectre is 2012 year-end model...
*
Your requirement is confusing hmm.gif
The only 14" with FHD in Malaysia right now is Dell Alienware 14.
ZenBook, Envy Spectre, XPS don't have 15" variant in Malaysia.
So you practically are looking at thin air tongue.gif
And you want to do some "heavy gaming" in those ultrabook (ZenBook, Envy Spectre, XPS are ultrabook)? sweat.gif
You can't afford MBP with your budget.
Laptop speakers suck in general. Use external speakers if you want good audio.
And no, i7 quad core will not give you good battery running time.

Asus
N550JV-CN077H, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080; IPS matte) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, backlit keyboard
As XeactorZ mentioned, this is the closest thing that remotely resemble what you may have in mind. Get 256G SSD (~ RM600) after market and swap with the HDD.
Price is RSP, negotiable.

If you know what is good for you, look at this instead:
www.illegear.com
Illegear RE-15, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GTX765M + (1920x1080)@RM3799[2.6kg][Onkyo, SoundBlaster Cinema], 8GB, 500GB 7200RPM, FreeDOS, [CPU Options: i7-4700MQ - i7-4900MQ]
Customisable to your heart content, can get a custom paint job to make it as "presentable" as you want.
The NTSC 95% gamut screen, once calibrated, has better colour production than any screen out there.

wow,thx for d suggestion bro...
max i can go is 15",as long as it is FHD...
screen is my main concern for photo editting,if possible,i would like to have d screen quality near or same to d MBP retina display...
gaming is not necessary,as i have not played in pc games for more den 2 years adi,jz in case...
speaker i would say at least gd,not d best as i know most of d laptop can't produce very gd sound...
maybe something like beats from hp,jbl from dell is gd enuf at least...
battery time is not a big concern,as i still can use direct cord supply...

illegear laptop is very new to me...
outlook is not reali presentable to me...
i will take a deep look on it...
how is d quality? service & warranty?
*
As I said, FHD IPS with i7 quad core, only the Asus that we listed.

illegear is selling Clevo laptop (just google it and you should find out more).
As I said, you can have customised paint job for the laptop (as in lots of colour choice (like car paint), with any logo that you like)
Again, the 95% NTSC gamut screen has the best (once calibrated, most accurate) colour reproduction of any screen panel out there right now.
GPU is not just for gaming. If you do photo or video editing, more and more software are utilising GPU power.
illegear is spec with an Onkyo speakers with sub-woofer, ok among laptops.

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2613184
Read through this thread for lots of info on the laptop.
You may contact Prince J right here on LYN, he is from illegear.

hi guys, need help with new laptop since my current one is faulty!

1. Preferred Brand = not Asus, I live near subang jaya and i went back and forth to lowyat 5 time already just to get my problematic laptop fixed. Any brand that has alot of service outlets or long lasting..
2. Budget = 3-4k. Better to keep it at lower range

3. Usage = Heavy gaming and multiple VMware, alot tabs of browsers

4. Preferred laptop/screen size 15.6 inch with numpad. not too heavy, but weight is not a big issue.

I'm looking for a laptop that can keep up with with the graphics of the newer games and last me hopefully the next 3-4 years at least. I'm currently using an n53sv, and it fits my slingbag just nice

I think it is time to replace my old laptop. Any recommendations for me to begin hunting? tongue.gif

We have not seen any 14" ultrabook with Haswell CPU yet in Malaysia.
If you can, wait a bit and come back after mid-Oct (when W8.1 roll out), brands will launch more models in preparation of year end holiday.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder why there isn't 14" haswell ultrabook yet. Do you think it will exceed my budget 3k when it arrived in Malaysia?
*
14" ultrabook should have rather wide-ranging competitive pricing, judging by historical precedents.
Btw, if you cannot wait, you can consider 13" MBA (which is a bit out of your budget):
MacBookAir 13", i5-4250U + Intel HD5000 + 128GB SSD + (1440x900)@RM3299[1.35kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookAir 13", i5-4250U + Intel HD5000 + 256GB SSD + (1440x900)@RM3899[1.35kg], 4GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX

Use bootcamp to run Win OS.

I meant MBA 2013 vs MBA 2012, battery running time almost increase by 4 hours according to some review (something like 8 hours extend to 12 hours, with some caveat)

These Lenovo S and HP so far only push battery running time by 2 hours to ~ 6 hours? hmm.gif
I'm a bit disappointed lah tongue.gif

Actually, personally I'm waiting for Surface Pro 2 (I want battery running time of at least 8 hours laugh.gif )

i refer to d specs in d forum, onli RE-13 Pro have IPS onli...
btw...
when will all d brand launch their new line of laptop?
as i see most of them is last year-end...
so there will be new line during dec 2013?
*
No, N550JV-CN077H and illegear are not using the same screen panel.
As I said, don't be too hung up on IPS.
The IPS has the wider viewing angle.
The NTSC 95% gamut screen has better/ more accurate colour reproduction.
Depends on usage, IPS is not necessary better than the NTSC 95% gamut panel, vice versa.

Yes, most brands are holding back and waiting for W8.1 to roll out (mid Oct13) and Haswell to ramp up.
You will definitely see more models getting launch before 2013 year end.

Go with the G400s, can get from re-seller at RM13xx if you negotiate hard tongue.gif
Otherwise the Acer E1 with Haswell Celeron and GT720M is an interesting combo.
Dota2 does not require powerful GPU, but too low a spec really take the enjoyment out tongue.gif
