Hi All,

I'm currently looking at getting a laptop for my work. Can someone recommend me the brands/models that worth looking at based on the criteria as below?

1. Preferred Brand : Acer/Samsung/Dell
2. Budget : 2000-2500
3. Usage : Work and light gaming mostly
4. Preferred laptop/screen size : 12-14"

I'd require the below specifications --

- must be able to project 1920 x 1080 on secondary output (full HD)
- preferable with SSD
- sleek design and lightweight
- long lasting battery hours

Can someone recommend me the models? Thanks.

Any laptop with HD3000/4000 IGPU can handle FHD. You need to make sure the connecting port (VGA, HDMI, DisplayPort ... ) are available at both the laptop / tablet and your secondary output though smile.gif

Hi,

Thank you for your recommendation. After much consideration, I think Dell XPS would suit my needs. Do you have any knowledge in terms of its battery life of XPS 13 vs XPS 14? Also, any pros and cons in between XPS 13 vs XPS 14? Thank you.
*
XPS 14, i5-3337U + Nvidia GT630M + 32GB mSATA+ 500GB(5400rpm) HDD + (1600x900)@RM3849[2.1kg], 4GB, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, W8
XPS 14, i7-3537U + Nvidia GT630M + 32GB mSATA + 500GB(5400rpm) HDD + (1600x900)@RM4249[2.1kg], 8GB, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, W7HP/W8
XPS 14, i7-3537U + Nvidia GT630M + 512GB SSD + (1600x900)@RM5549[2.1kg], 8GB, backlit, spill resistant keyboard, W8SL
XPS13, i5-3337U + Intel HD4000 + 128GB SSD@RM3399[1.36kg], 4GB, W8, backlit
XPS13, i5-3337U + Intel HD4000 + 256GB SSD + (1920x1080)@RM4299[1.36kg], 8GB, W8, backlit
XPS13, i7-3517U + Intel HD4000 + 256GB SSD+ (1920x1080)@RM4599[1.36kg], 8GB, W8, backlit

Over your original budget, but if you could afford it, both are very good laptop smile.gif

Advantage:
XPS14 - with discrete GPU (good for your light gaming (don't know what titles you play), larger storage capacity. Larger battery, will run longer if Nvidia GPU don't kick in. Killer Wireless Card. Have HDMI, LAN port.
XPS13 - very much lighter. Longer battery running time if XPS14 kick in the GPU. Some already spec with a very good FHD display.

Hi Nexus,

Thank you for the information. Are you saying XPS14 only can support up to 1600x900 reso? as compared to XPS13 which can support up to 1920x1080 reso? Can you please advice? Thanks.
*
No.
The screen in XPS14 only display HD+ (1600x900), but if you connect it to external display, it could support FHD.

1. Preferred Brand : Any
2. Budget : As low as possible
3. Usage : Normal assignments and gaming
4. Preferred laptop/screen size : 14 inch +

Other features:
Specs:
-i5 3rd gen mobile processor (3230m or newer/better if possible)
-W8 (SL is fine)
-2 GB graphics (640m / 740m, prefer with optimus)
-HDD 500/640/750gb (prefer 7200rpm)
-2 / 4 GB ram
-Battery life 4 hours++ on idle

Physical:
-2 years warranty
-aluminum (no plastic / glossy)
-comfortable keyboard keys
-cooler pad friendly (with air entry / exit below the chasis)
*
Your requirement is a head scratcher hmm.gif
You want (full) aluminium body, with no plastic. That are normally found in:
a. ultrabook; or
b. business class laptop (magnesium alloy)
a. ultrabook - normally spec with ULV CPU (which is weaker than i5-3230M), and don't come with discrete GPU.
b. business class laptop - normally don't come with discrete GPU, and even if it does, it will be Quadro / Firepro, and for these cards to be on par with GT740M for gaming purpose, you are looking at quite expensive solution.

Just buy a MacBook Pro 15" lah smile.gif

MacBookPro 15", i7-3610QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1440x900)@RM5499[2.56kg], 4GB, 500GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookPro 15", i7-3720QM + Nvidia GT650M + (1440x900)@RM6799[2.56kg], 8GB, 750GB(5400rpm), backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookPro 15" (Retina Display), i7-3610QM + Nvidia GT650M + 256GB SSD + (2880x1800)@RM6799[2.02kg], 8GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX
MacBookPro 15" (Retina Display), i7-3720QM + Nvidia GT650M + 512GB SSD + (2880x1800)@RM8699[2.02kg], 8GB, backlit keyboard, Mac OSX

Wait a bit since it will be refreshed with Haswell soon.

Or you may look at this as well:
N550JV-CN077H, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT750M + (1920x1080; IPS matte) + Bluray@RM3699[2.7kg], 4GB, 1TB, W8, backlit keyboard (no, it's not full aluminium body, but look close enough)

Buying laptop for the 1st time? smile.gif Laptop is expensive compared to desktop.
You want sturdy built? Those are expensive (business class laptop with magnesium alloy / carbon fiber that build like tank)
You want full aluminium casing? Those are expensive. (btw, aluminium casing is not necessary "sturdy" smile.gif )
Prepare to fork out RM5-6k (or more) for the spec that you want.

For your usage, you need good CPU+GPU, and that will probably wipe out your budget already.

Dear sifu, need your suggestion and guidance on my purchase of laptop

Preferred Brand = ASUS, DELL, LENOVO
2. Budget = less than 2.0k
3. Usage = uni student, assignment and will uyilise for autocad software (engineering student)
4. Preferred laptop/screen size = 14'

Actually my brother has futher his study at politeknik and this weekend he asked my father to a laptop for him..there are few question that need your kind advise

1. i heard autocad software not compatible with win8 OS, is it true?

2. If my brother will use this laptop for more on autocad purpose, it really need a good GPU or high number of RAM?

Thanks in advance

Ideally, to run AutoCAD, get i7 quad core, and if doing 3D CAD, need good GPU. Also 8G RAM or more is ideal (8G RAM stick ~ RM200). Also FHD screen is better, as he can see more on the screen.
But your brother budget is pretty tight. Priorities smile.gif
