Hello Everyone,

SOLS Tech is a relitively new NGO in Malaysia and we're looking for advice and help concerning our outreach efforts.

Quick Who We Are
We are a donation oriented Microsoft Registered Refurbisher and an NGO operating out of Segambut in Kuala Lumpur. We are a charity organization looking for ways to expand our impact.

What We Do
We aim to collect old digital devices from individuals, organizations, and corporate groups, wipe the data with DBAN, and repair/refurbish the computers and devices. We then distribute the repaired goods to other NGOs who work with the poor or underprivileged all over Malaysia - and we do it all for free!

icon_question.gif But we need help! icon_question.gif

We are relitively new, and not a lot of people know about our organization yet. We're the only licensed donation oriented Microsoft Registered Refurbisher in the country, and we just want to help as many people as we can! We need to find a way to reach out to people, to organizations who need our technology, to firms and organizations who can help us donate and tell everyone about how their old, seemingly useless technology can be repaired to help someone who has zero access to a computer or the internet, right here in Malaysia!

Any advice you all may have would really be appreciated. If you want more information about the organization, feel free to check out the website, solstech.org or the summary that's attached to this post, or just ask me for more information! No suggestion is too basic, or too complex or crazy. We are looking for crazy ideas, and would love to hear yours!

Right now we have the technicians we need, and are trying to expand the network to collect computers and digital devices. However, in the future, if we can find more people to collect from and more people to donate to, then we would gladly accept any technical assistance you could provide!

We would love to be able to get community members involved in refurbishing these items so they can be donated to the poor. Perhaps we can try to organize some sort of promotional function where we get people to refurbish on site, or have a competition to see who can build the fastest computer with spare parts and old boards, or something like that!

Hey Exorthexquas,

We're delighted to hear you've got items you'd like to donate! The items can be donated at many Hong Leong branches near you, or at our center in Segambut. (visit our website or Hong Leong's website for details)

We would also like to establish some sort of partnership with someone in the Low Yat community to collect personal donations such as yours so we can come and collect several items at a time. If anyone on here knows a group who might be interested in some CSR or just wants to help out, we'd love to chat about it further! biggrin.gif

VinluV, we would love to take it off your hand. We'll try to fix it up, get some ink for it or pass it on to an organization who needs a printer! If it's not functioning properly, we can try to fix it, or we can save some parts such as the motor to use in green electricity generation (we're just now starting exploration in this project) - and we make sure what we can't salvage, repair, use for instruction purposes, or creative purposes, gets recycled!

Hello Fluo,

You ask some great questions and hopefully we have some great answers for you.

With Regards to Credibility, how do you know we are working for charities and not for cash?

We are a division of SOLS 24/7, a large international NGO - possibly the largest non formal educator in South East Asia, with more than 140,000 students trained. Our main organization has around 30 centers across Malaysia right now, with the backing of the Better Malaysia Foundation and the Berjaya Group. SOLS Tech itself is working closely with Hong Leong Bank who has donated significant numbers of their banking computers, and Tech Soup Asia, as well as Microsoft, and has collected from many enterprises across the country. We, SOLS 24/7, of which SOLS Tech is a part, is one of the only NGOs in the region to voluntarily do full audits of accounts, even doing receipt tracking!

If you have any questions, or want to see our space, we invite you to come by our headquarters. We are located in Sungai Besi, near to TBS, and welcome visitors. Specifically, SOLS Tech is in Unit G-8.

With regards to security of your information; we do not currently offer official audit certificates for the computers we refurbish. Unfortunately we cannot afford Blanco's high end software which will do that - nor do we have the current through traffic volume to necessitate such a purchase. However, we do use their free software, DBAN (Duke's Boot and Nuke) with a minimum of 8 write overs, which completely erases hard drives on every item which enters our doors. It is the first step in our refurbishment process. To this day nobody has been able to recover anything from a DBAN disk - even shadow imprints are unfetchable. Not working hard drives are either magnetically wiped, or physically broken before recycling/upcycling as well.

If you are truly concerned about the security of your items, please feel free to use DBAN yourself before you donate - http://www.dban.org/download

Feel free to email solstech@sols247.org for more information!
