Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Playable Characters unveiled!
by IGN Staff

May 10, 2006 - Nintendo just pulled a fast one on us. At an after-hours press briefing a mere minute ago, the company pulled another ace out of its sleeve: Smash Bros. Brawl -- the next installment in Nintendo's popular Super Smash Bros. series.

Details are just now rolling in, but we have confirmed the following playable characters:

* Pit (Kid Icarus)
* Solid Snake (Metal Gear Solid)
* Zero Suit Samus (the blue "no-suit" Samus from Metroid: Zero Mission)
* Meta-Knight (Kirby)
* Wario (Wario)

Under the direction of series creator Masahiro Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature classic, GameCube-style combat -- not Wii-style motion-controlled combat. That means players who prefer to play the game with the traditional control setup can look forward to using the GameCube control-style they're already accustomed to.

"We found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game. We're looking at keeping the control simple, as it has been," said Sakurai. "The Wii hardware has sockets for the GameCube controller, too. So I'll just say now that you may not want to throw away your GCN controller yet."

The game also features a range of new nasty toys, such as the ability to unleash a puppy from Nintendogs that will run up to the screen, put its paws up and obscure the view of the action. Mario, Kirby, Pikachu and Link have been confirmed as returning characters. Sakurai confirmed that Wario actually has a fart attack and that Solid Snake can use his trusty cardboard box. In the video trailer, Snake gets out of the box and says "It's showtime!"

"We thought a lot about what to do with Snake and his moves in Super Smash Bros. Brawl," said Sakurai. "As you all know Snake walks around with a gun, but with Super Smash Bros. I didn't want to bring in a lot of real weapons. So that was a real challenge. But conversely, if we could use things like rocket launchers and other explosives, not only would that be fitting for Snake, but it would work for the other characters. But who knows. Maybe Snake will exclusively use explosives throughout the game."

Sakurai said the decision to include Solid Snake when Hideo Kojima himself practically "begged" to include the Metal Gear character in the last Smash Bros. game. When asked about the possibility of Sonic the Hedgehod appearing in the game as well, Shigeru Miyamoto said: "There are probably possibilities for other third parties as well, and it maybe that even know there are corporate discussions going on about including some of these other characters."

Even better, the game will be fully online playable in addition to featuring a robust multiplayer mode. "My plan is to include Wi-Fi connection compatibility and online functionality. One of the primary reasons Super Smash Bros. Brawl was created was that Nintendo, when taking Wii online, wanted to have Smash Bros. to do that," added Sakurai.

The bad news is that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will no longer be a Wii launch title, but will instead be released in 2007.

Regarding the music:
Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu is making all the music in the game!! The title track, "A Main Theme with Emotion," is available here for streaming and downloading. If you played any Final Fantasy game then you know just how incredibly awesome Uematsu is with music creation!

Well... if you read the articles when confronted by the question of "Will Sonic be in?" Miyamoto said "We are currently working with key partners for other characthers"

If Sonic is in... well.. that's it.. the fight of the millienium, probably more anticipated than SF vs KOF!!! hahahahaha wink.gif

After much consideration, we decided to have Snake refrain from using real-world guns-instead, he'll use lots of explosives.

What kinds of attacks will Snake unleash when he steps onto a new stage?

You'll have to wait and see.

It was delayed to January 2008 in Japan. Hopefully USA will maintain its December 2007 release, but I doubt it. Ninty US will have another conference tomorrow and maybe then they will announce the delay sad.gif

What's better than seeing Mario, Sonic, Snake brawling? Lets hope more characters will be revealed.

In my wildest dreams I hope of Cloud (FF7).

Edited: Beaten by Greg on the release date.

It's just unbearable! December 3rd was a nice date, just 2 days before my birthday!.. And it'd be a smash(pun intended!) to play this game with my friends! My gf could be a great co-op partner.

And I'd like to see.. RYU & KEN added! We need more 3rd party icons joining the fray!

I heard the SSBB will be available in the wii shop channel for 700 points

With the 12 character available + 11 course to be played!
Anyone know this news and when will it be release on the wii shop channel?
*
Is it April fools already? Sauce please!

And I don' think SSBB will be available on the WiiShop/WiiWare as it was meant to be a sold on disc kinda game(also worth mentioning, how would it fit? I've got 400 blocks left and Internet channel is already something 300 blocks).. And USD7 is unbelievably CHEAP! smile.gif

I could have taken that into consideration, but he stated SSBB tongue.gif

And Melee wouldn't be released as download because it's a GCN title, and as far as I know, Ninty isn't gonna release any games from the Gamecube(CD based that is) games on the VC.

As for the N64 version of Smash Bros? I guess it could be released prior to the Brawl release, just like how they release all NES/SNES Metroids before MP3.

I heard that they are going to release this demo on the shop channel for 700 wii points on Dec. 3 which is a monday. For some reason I have a feeling that its just a rumor but we will see on Dec. 3. I hope it will come to the shop channel but people keep saying that the wii does not have enough memory.

If you followed the smashbros.com dojo, you should have noticed that ALL the screenshots are taken with the Gamecube controller inserted.

Even the creator/director favors the Gamecube controller for it's 'rumble', earlier mentioned in the blogs life.

Personally, I'd go with the Gamecube controller > Classic Controller > Wiimote > Wiimote + Nunchuck.

Don't know if it'll work with arcade stick tho'..

The only GC controller i have is a wavebird, so... no rumble for me either, haha!

the new online play demo shows kirby's final smash in action! I loved watching kirby use that cute one-shot cook power(from kirby superstar). Seems to do a hell lot of damage, apart from the free food you get from it. No aiming issues either!

Now i'm kinda torn. I used to main with Kirby in the original game(he was kinda cheap, i'll admit!), but Melee's kirby was kinda nerfed so i mained Shiek instead. I was plenty happy when they announced that the TP Zelda still has a Shiek alter-ego; i kinda speculated a seperate, unlockable "ocarina" zelda.

Hmm, they better have a Midna somewere in there...

Must train Brawl to a competitive level! Button-mashing to hell! tongue.gif

Trying to master Samus player, and oh, in that new dojo video, the final smash is seen, invulnerable during the blast? Funny, the opponent had to wait 1/2 a second before she stopped(and changed to Zero suit) to smash her away rclxub.gif Crazy shit of a beam.

guess i'll get a GC wired controller for this.
can anyone who's using the GC controller measure/estimate the length of the wire which is attach to the controller?

the distance from the wii to the couch is about 5-7 feet away. else i'll need to lookout for a wavebird.

GC controller wire is very short, something like 1.5 meters only. That's why I bought the extension from PA, adds another good 1.5 meters.

I can hold my own against the harder single player modes, but the only multiplayer i did were with my siblings, and they kinda suck, so the online multiplayer is a very welcome addition.

Thing is, newcomers usually rely too much on the B button(pikaa-chu here, spin attack there) and forget why the game is called melee. Shiek's forward smash is this neat double kick thing that doesn't really smash(makes the star rod shoot 2 stars, though!), but she moves fast and her attacks are easy to connect. Samus is kinda like Shiek except her B moves are actually useful.

I'd still use Kirby if they didn't nerf pretty much all of his moves' hit priorities. Forget final cutter, even his stone drop is slower and hard to connect in melee!

While we're at it, is any of our local suppliers taking preorders yet?

One thing I must get right in Smash games, blocking/dodging, air-dodging, and grabs. And to use them efficiently that is.

It's one of the most important part in any VS. games, but with so much action going on, blocking and getting cheesed off might be a bad idea, especially when the shield breaks and you get stunned badly.

I need to learn how to grapple ledge also, thank god they made it easier in Brawl.

And I'm planning to be a Samus player, seen pro videos of it, and damn, Samus is kick-ass to some extend, even tho' she moves like a hulk, must always dash.. And I hate tapping forward FAST.

And GREATEST addition to Brawl > Melee, cancellation of "Up" as jump! Now they just need to cancel "Down" as dash to ground, Samus down-A rarely hits because she falls too fast(for me).

i have a bad feeling i wont be able to get a copy of this game this coming thurs.... amazon doesnt seem to be accepting preorders and major retailers have stopped their preorders...

even play-asia said this :

Please note that due to heavy supply cuts, Play-Asia.com cannot guarantee the shipping date of this preorder item at the moment. A large portion of preorders are likely to ship after the game's original release date some time in February. We deeply apologize for this unexpected inconvenience and will update all customers that have preordered this game on release date.

Hmm, brawlcentral suspended again. Last update last night confirmed 11 unlockable characters, including Ganondorf(TP Dark Beast Ganon final smash), R.O.B, Mr. Game & Watch, Falco, among others.

Argh, ROB is playable!? He's not even flexible laugh.gif

And I didn't get to try out Mr. Game & Watch.. didn't unlock him back in Melee.

Oh wow, 6 hours and joystiq got hold of all the updates. Windwaker Link is confirmed.

The 35 character roster mockup people were talking about last week is turning out to be totally true.

Well, the spoiling has already begun where I'm at sad.gif

This kinda news/leak isn't something any Smash player would like to miss out, especially those hardcore-wannabes (like me).

Green Hill Zone stage would be one of my favs thumbup.gif So VIBRANT.

A good Nintendo game consists of:-

Easy gameplay.
Hard to master.

And the Smash series is what it is.

It's just so easy for anyone to jump-in and start button-mashing away on the control, hoping to knock some people out, and they do!

But in competitive terms, the depth is really there. Even the Dojo is listing out "techniques" not available through the game manual.

It's a fighting game, with a twist. If you don't know by now, Smash battles are not about getting your opponent down to 0 HP, but rather, try to send them flying out of the stage. Of course, if you don't damage them enough, they can come crawling back onto stage to whoop your ass, but there's where you come in with Samus(or someone), ready to launch a nice fat homing rocket into the oncoming ledge-grabber.

It's quite "King of the Hill" when you play with 4-players, y'know, just trying to stay alive, when other are dying and coming back with 0% damage(they don't die permanently on default settings), and all they need is just a tiny little flick of their hand to send to you Icarus Heaven. There's much tension involved tongue.gif

And if you're not getting this game, or not yet, I'm still looking forward for organizing the Brawl party. That 100" projector my dad has should be interesting if I can get my hands on it brows.gif

When..

I get the game.
I can find a proper venue.
I can possibly get a nice TV/Projector to do the job.
I have played through at LEAST a bit of the game(we don't wanna be using stock characters DO WE?) tongue.gif

But srsly, 100" 720p/1080i projector was drool.gif .. So give it 1 or 2 weeks after the game rclxms.gif

Still need to think where we can go Smash. Somewhere that got space abit for a crowd of at least 10.

Somewhere, where there is a nice gigantic LCD. Somewhere..

if you played melee, then you don't need a review.

if you havent played any smash before.. well... essentially it's a very simple to play fighter that features a boat load of nintendo characthers beating the crap out of each other. if you don't get how fun that is...

the other thing is the fact that it has 4 player capability so if you have the controllers this will be a riot to play.

Ars Technica Super Smash Bros Brawl review

Review: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/games/super...bros-review.ars

The Good

* Wide variety of fighters
* Many different environments in which to fight
* Long, single-player campaign, as well as many events and challenges to overcome
* Addicting four-player game play
* Easy for beginners
* Deep enough for hardcore gamers
* A metric ton of stuff to unlock
* Many different control options
* You'll want the soundtrack, the music is great

The Bad

* Annoying friend codes and lack of voice chat make online play limited
* Online play can have massive lag at times
* Some unlocks take way too much effort
* The level editor is also somewhat limited
* No leaderboards or online stat-tracking limits bragging rights

The Ugly

* Knowing every move in the game, practicing for hours, and STILL having button mashers beat you

Verdict: Buy

After I got Brawl, I spent two days worth my time and energy trying to get this damn thing to work.

Speculation begins.

First load, disc read error(DRE). Ok, so I tried re-inserting it in couple of times.. like 30-40+ times, I mananged to load the CD once, prompt me to update -- update complete, auto-restart. Brawl icon appears in Disc Channel, click, Brawl image loads, with sound, press Start -- Screen turns black, back to Wii Channel Screen but Disc channel kosong once again.

Since then, I think I've gotten at least 100 DRE's and nothing has worked, only ONCE.

I'm bringing my console and game to GH later on to do some further investigation. There is a chance that the disc might be defective, but that's a lower chance compared to the "small percentage" of "dust" problems.

I'm leaning a bit to what Andy said, there are some speculations regarding launch Wii(or some Wii's) that have their lasers/lens 'misaligned'.

Gratz to those who managed to get this working. Indeed this has pissed numerous people world-wide including myself.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl disc-read error hits the US
American Super Smash Bros. Brawl owners hit with the same error as Japan.

March 09, 2008 - Some owners of US copies of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was released today, have reported that they're experiencing the same errors when playing the game as were first reported when it was released in Japan. Nintendo of America has announced that those suffering from the problem, which is most likely due to a dirty lens inside the machine, will be able to send their consoles in to be cleaned, and has set up a web page detailing the specifics of the situation.

"Super Smash Bros. Brawl utilizes a double-layer disc which has a large memory capacity. A very small percentage of Wii consoles may have trouble consistently reading data off this large capacity disc if there is some contamination on the lens of the disc drive. Nintendo has specialized cleaning equipment that can resolve this problem. (Please do NOT attempt to clean the lens yourself, as you may damage the system.)"

Nintendo has also noted that "due to the nature of this particular issue, you should not lose any of your stored data. In some rare cases you may have to re-download your Virtual Console games from the Wii Shop Channel, but there is no cost to doing so."

I wonder if we can send to Maxsoft? hmm.gif

I read in some SG forums regarding some SG'ians unable to play the game too. Apparently, one SG poster said "we don't have official support" considering it's not(Ninty SG Hq) REALLY a HQ for games nor manufacturing. It's just Maxsoft who is the distributor of Ninty in Asia, so 'they' don't even know if Maxsoft would help or not.

Either way, I'm gonna ask GH to make clarifications with them. Of course, my copy of Brawl had the Maxsoft sticker on it too tongue.gif

If I actually find out that my Wii is the culprit, first an obvious choice would be to send it to Ninty.

But that's sort of out of the question, shipping charges, time, and etc. etc., noway. I burned my brains out waiting and now I gotta wait even longer doh.gif

Or, I get someone to open it and "clean" the lens. Wipe here and there, and if it STILL doesn't work, wii have a problem here I come!

Of course, there are other 'solutions' suggested by the InterChets, lens cleaner, canned-air(have not seen one in M'sia before). Prolly will go check out this "canned-air" later in some hardware shop.

Hurm, with that being the case, we seem to have to halt the plans for the Wii gath then. I still think its ok to proceed, but with the number should go back to who is willing to sponsor the Wii (that works with Brawl). What do you suggest?

with all this disc error fiasco, i wonder will future wii game developers be discouraged from going dual-layer (ie. more capacity)? this could seriously hinder the evolution of Wii games as developers are constrained by the lack of capacity.... unless they go the NGC route, two discs which is fine with me cos i always found GC discs to be quite sexy and since they were so compact, having two discs weren't much of a problem. nod.gif

Two discs for a RPG is reasonable, but two discs for a fighter? Nevermind the other content, we bought this game to Brawl, not smash the targets or 100-man-brawl..

Whatever is it, I just wish there was better support locally, even if it means sending the unit to Singapore, which isn't too bad.

And in question of working, or like what Kyo said, "What now?".. I had half a mind to sell off my Wii(with a bunch of VC games innit, and buy a new console. I can forget everything else I've played, I just need Brawl for now.. My GF, friends, are waiting for it. Heck, even 'some' of you who are interested in the gathering.

I agree with Andy. We can't really say for sure what is the cure, but you could at least try that.

Lets put the Wii gath on hold if u guys have no problem with that. Those who would like to go on, would have to help support bringing the Wii console with Brawl enabled on it. I have no problem with either choices.

Sorry to hear about the dust problem. sad.gif I've had no problems with mine, but I have noticed that the Wii makes a lot of noise accessing the disc and the loading times are pretty long for a Nintendo first party game.

yeah i get the noise problem too most of the time when playing GC games.....some say it's good cos it means your Wii is working but i really can't understand that logic. but of course mine is not that bad, i just hear the disc spinning ocassionally.....

Sihum, Sorry to here that sad.gif . I don't know whether this solution can solve your problem or not?

One of my friend also facing the DRE problem but he managed to fix it. According to my friend, there is a small compartment under the bottom of the Wii, unscrew it and you will see a battery inside, take it out and wait for 5 minutes and put it back again. Power up your Wii and insert SSBB see whether it can work or not.

But before do the above steps, please backup all the save games and VC games to prevent all the files deleted.

Of course, there are other 'solutions' suggested by the InterChets, lens cleaner, canned-air(have not seen one in M'sia before). Prolly will go check out this "canned-air" later in some hardware shop.

FYI: Compressed Air/Gas Dusters can be found in ACE Hardware stores. They're about RM35 a can.

1. there's nothing funny about not being able to play brawl after going all the way to the KLs and plonking $190 for it.

2. obviously NOT ALL machines of those certain batches suffer from this. otherwise you'd hear a lot more uproar about this problem from wii owners worldwide.

3. now stop talking and go finish unlocking your brawl characters.

It's not clear really what the exact problem is. I believe Nintendo claims it's dirty lenses, but I've also heard it's lasers from earlier models that don't play nicely with dual layer.

And that's pretty off topic, but I believe rock band guitars can play gh, but gh doesn't play rock band. Not too sure about the cross platform tho.

Since everyone's asking,

Wiikey prevents Brawl from running.
Wiikey can be corrupted by bad firmware flashes to temporarily disable it so you can play brawl.
Most imitation wiikeys cannot be firmware flashed.

Apparently mine was an imitation wiikey. So i had the shop guy chuck it out for me.

i have the same problem. only once last week i manage to get on a random match. very little lag and no more 'seeking' to continue with next match.

It's just not worth waiting 30 mins and not get to brawl with someone. I wonder if WFC service is overloaded now.

Anyway, i have added everyone's FC. Please add mine:

On th topic of the *%#*$# that is Subspace Emisarry... my god.. what a load of $#%#$ it is.. all the reviews are right... it's a PAIN to play.. the final stage of the game.. (yes that whole part is considered ONE stage) was just pure... ugh..

But, I knew I just had to make it through just to see the damn videos.. and damn.. the videos make the pain go away!!

That long ass level drove me crazy. It was like Kirby and the Amazing Mirror all over again.

I was, though, rewarded with a hefty 300 something coins for going through that trouble.

Really? Could be bad connection on my end then, rain just somewhat ended, and rain screws up wireless a lot. And I'm not talking about the router, I'm talking ISP. I'm using Jaring wireless. Let's try again sometime then.

@ nub: Nice pic. Haven't got that trophy yet, unlockable? Or through coin launcher? And where's yer friend code tongue.gif

Oh man, thats too bad

My Wii is a Dec 2007 purchase, the Pit & Palutena FMV I saw after the Mario vs Kirby fight, resulted in a disc error, sweat.gif luckily when I restarted and tried again, it was working fine until now... fingers crossed.

My friend code... 3007-7993-5144

Is it just me, or is it hard to get on random matches? I've even tried the port forwarding like that stickied post on gamefaqs.com... Hmm, maybe I'm doing it wrong.

if joining puts you in an empty room, I think there's a little error (got that a couple of times) Have to get out of the room then try again... It's maybe because they might have already entered into a match? I'm not sure though

My friend code... 3007-7993-5144

Is it just me, or is it hard to get on random matches? I've even tried the port forwarding like that stickied post on gamefaqs.com... Hmm, maybe I'm doing it wrong.
*
i only got a random match once. i also tried port forwarding but no success.

spent a few hours configuring my router based on this guideline from big N

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wfc/en_na...18&action2.y=29

Anyone manage to get random matches to work please share.

Luckily FC still works. Anyone brawling tonight?

I think we are having problem with random matches beacuse we are to far and to laggy to connect with all the US players.

Well we should be connecting to JP at least. But I dunno how the stupid wfc works. You could be right that they're just picking up people with the lowest latency/ping when forming random matches and we're sitting at the bottom of the barrel.

But IGN also claimed they had problems with random matches in their podcast on release week. I think the system is just horribly broken.

Anyone bother trying to unlock everything? There's so much to collect and unlock, and I'm having fun attempting at it slowly (only have an hour or two to spare each day) that I think I'm seriously going to take a year or two to get them all. :P

What's your record in the Home Run Contest? 20 ft? 50 ft? How about over 21,000! This video was captured by a few Japanese gamers both using Ganondorf. There have been several attempts to break this record but I can't find one. I came across this while surfing YouTube, so if you find a neat video you'd like to see featured please let us know.

Hey guys, I just got SSBB 2 days ago, and I'm looking forward to trying out some online play.

I'm extremely new to the game, so I'd most probably die a lot, but nonetheless, It'd be cool if anyone (preferrably as inexperienced as I am), could trade FCs with me.

Here's my Brawl FC: 3695-1266-0081

If you add me, let me know by either quoting my post, or PMing me, and I'll add you back ASAP. (I don't want to go around adding everyone without getting any FC adds back in return =P)

Alright, I'll try to get on nod.gif

I haven't gotten on my Wii yet so I haven't added you, but I will in half an hour or so, and you'll most probably be my first FC added <_>

Hope it doesn't lag, though. Streamyx hasn't been too awesome the past few weeks...

It will be lagless if you play with your friends in the same country smile.gif . Lagging may arise when you play with overseas player =) but until now I still haven't been able to play with overseas players because when searching players(random) , it is highly likely for us to be disconnected from the server. It definitely has something to do with our ISP yawn.gif

Yeah, but judging from the way Streamyx has been acting recently, I wouldn't be surprised if there's local lag.

Random matches don't work for me either, but I managed to spectate an online match (which was seemingly lagless). After a few matches, it started to lag, though.

I'm heading off to my Wii for some practice now, I'm still totally crap at Brawl.. >_>

ditto on Snake. powerful as he may be, he's a tad too slow for my liking.

me lineup on the subspace emissary are:

captain falcon
donkey kong (yea slow, but heck he's powderful sial xD)
pit
meta knight

There's no such thing as an "invite". You both have to add each other's codes manually.

And hey guys, been a while. Haven't brawled for a long time, since my bro came back for the summer from canada. I had to leave the wii at home; he loves him some mariokart. I'm sure there's a handful of you guys i haven't added yet(as are the people who haven't added me, hmph!), i'll get to updating my list whenever i'm home.

do you have other games that have online multiplayer capabilities? like Mario Kart, Tetris, etc...

if those can, then perhaps, SSBB no 1 is playing any more... sweat.gif

I have never tried SSBB online yet , was playing the adventure mode.

I always go online with DR.Mario , Tetris Party , FIFA 2009 , Cue Sports Revolution , Mario Kart (at times) , but most of the time GHWT and GHM , no lagging issues except for FIFA 2009 at times it lags not as often.

You can add me if u playing anyone of these above tru PM thumbup.gif

I have this game since November. And not only I can't find any random brawlers, I also get disconnection regularly while waiting for random brawler.

However, I agree with the others. I tried playing with a friend in Texas. Extreme lag, like trying to watch youtube video with screamyx connection at peak hour.

If anyone wants my friend code, tho, it's 0388-2240-9170. PM me your code if you add me.
