Hi,need some advice from more experience member. Just got a new airbrush, been painting my models with brush in the past and though of trying something new. I've been testing the new airbrush with GW citadel paints and some tamiya acrylics. Recently went to the hobby shop and had a chat and got convince to try the Mr Hobby Aqueous paints.

So, some advice on the following questions-

1)It is ok too thin aqueous paint with the mr.hobby leveling thinner, been using it with other paints is ok, but the hobby shop guy was persistent that the aqueous thinner is better.

2)Is it ok to use the aqueous paint as an alternative to citadel paints, for detail brush painting, or should I stick to GW citadel paints.

3)The GW citadel 'washes', what is the better dilution? Used water to diluted to airbrush but final result not satisfying, there is uneven distribution with white granules.

4)It is ok to use the Modo flat clear paint as a coat over models painted with GW citadel or acrylic paints? Been reading abit regarding these but, there are mix opinion on it, some say is ok, some say it's not.

Thanks in advance, for any advice.  biggrin.gif

leveling thinner is expensive, i'm sure you can use it to thin your paint, but if you are using handpaint and thin with thinner, it might "eat" away your base paint (if there's any) because leveling thinner is very strong

best is to use the thinner that belongs to the type of paint, lacquer use mr hobby thinner, enamel use zippo or enamel thinner, acrylic use acrylic thinner

i not sure what you mean by "washes" and i dont use GW citadel, so far i only tried mr hobby lacquer and enamel

you can use Modo color top coat as coating using airbrush, thin it with mr Hobby leveling thinner, i've been using it for 3 of my ship models and the results is satisfying and modo color is slightly cheaper price for the volume it offer compare to mr hobby top coat

if you are using lacquer type top coat, make sure your acrylic or enamel base paint is completely dried and cured, if not the thinner of the top coat might "eat" the base color

since you are going to spray flat clear, you can spray from a bit further distance, this will let the paint to partially dried before reaching the kit giving more rough finishing, but that's depends on what kind of model you are spray on and your preference smile.gif

if brush panting any Tamiya/Mr.Hobby bottle paint can. top coat can get mr.topcoat, BJT got but canned topcoats super expensive. Gloss coat many alternatives in hardware shop but semi/flat topcoat really not much choice. cheapest is airbrush + mr.hobby flat clear, but it's not hard enough to protect against scratches. Mr.Hobby Super Clear is Lacquer based will form a harder topcoat but might react with acrylic paint. Or you can try Enamel.

if you are using airbrush, you probably dont need to worry much on the reaction with acrylic paint, just make sure your acrylic base is completely dried and cured then you will be fine

when you spray with airbrush dont spray too much layer at once and after spray dont touch it and let it dry first, after the first layer dried you can proceed to spray another slightly thicker layer depends on your preference

i dont like spray can, it is hard to control the amount of paint output and their very expensive and doesn't last long

spray can in Ace Hardware or those hardware shop is cheap, but they are using industrial thinner to thin the paint so it might melt plastic, and those paint isn't really suitable for model kit
