Hi guys,

Anyone here a Malaysian woo audio product buyer, in particular wa7? Collecting mine from fedex today and wondering whether I need some sort of convertor for the power supply given that U.S. power supply is different from Malaysia?

Hope to get some advice from you guys.

Thanks in advance.

None required as they are user-selectable for 110v/220v.
But please ensure that at the bottom of the power supply, you select 220v if they haven't done so from the factory.
Have fun with the WA7.
Just got mine on the Christmas eve

Back to Xiaomi Piston, I ordered one from eBay for US$10 and received a fake....
Bu**er.... even $10 iem also want to fake.... rclxub.gif
Luckily I still have the JVC while waiting for my Roxanne

$17 exclude other fees.
Should be around RM60 since Yuan has been quite strong lately.
Anyway, according to the link TS posted, it's a limited edition and only 20,000 units being sold, possibly already finished by then (starting June 28th).
So I doubt anyone can purchase a new one now, unless second hand or fake. doh.gif

I have a Piston for a while now. For the price it is okay. The build quality is really good but the SQ is just so-so. You are not really missing much.

On the other hand, the Piston 2 has been released and I have one inbound. Should be here in a week or two.

Thanks for your reply.
I do agree that the build quality is really good, even for the imitation version biggrin.gif

Looking forward to hear your impression on the Piston 2.

Received my Piston 2 and already give it a brief listening. As promise, here is my impression: compared to Piston 1, the P2 is a really noticeably improvement. The grainy upper vocal is gone, the bass reaches down even deeper. Overall the sound signature remains fairly similar to P1 - bass oriented and a somewhat of a full sound, but I won't call it very warm. Because of P2 being vented, soundstage is also improved with better depth. I paid around US$25 and it is well worth the price.

Excellent for the price. You can pay twice as much for something else with half the SQ. It is not going to beat really good IEM, but I don't think you can ask for more with that kind of price.

Dear ClieOS,

how is the P2 if compared to your highly rated RE400? could the P2 at least match the RE400 SQ?

I won't say it beats RE400, especially on the mid, but it does get pretty close consider the 1/4 price tag.

Bassy with a very slight V-shape FR, fairly well balanced with a good soundstage. Dunno what Japanese or German sound is like.

The Pistons are bassy IEMs, borderline into basshead territory. There's also a surprising amount of sparkle up top and generally, the mids do suffer presenting the Pistons with a U-shaped signature. Soundstage is pretty wide though and generally the Pistons are laid-back IEMs. Great for pop, rap, EDM, techno sort of genres.

Pretty much. The similarly priced SoundMagic E10 is more balanced at this regard, it doesn't have as much prensence on the bass nor does it ever go lower than 50hz (rarely even touching that in fact).

You could do the foam mod by removing the foam in the Pistons to improve mids, but that really saps out the kick on the bass that the Pistons is known for. Double edged sword IMO.
Some people like it without the foam because it becomes less U-shaped and is generally more balanced and upfront, but I personally think it doesn't fix much. Also by removing the foam, the treble becomes way too bright as well.

Indeed, the looks of it is something you'd generally expect from IEMs priced RM300+ or more.

Anyone know how to get these earphones in Malaysia? I wouldn't mind paying a small premium, but considering 99 yuan = RM50, and the sellers on LYN are selling it for almost double the price, I'm definitely not going to buy from them.

The problem is your calculation and perception of the cost. On Xiaomi Singapore's website is SGD19.99 + SGD5 delivery = SGD25 = RM66. To deliver to you via Poslaju is another RM6. What about the time taken to wait in front of the computer and compete with others to get it (just like AirAsia 0 fare sale)? In fact, asking for RM100 is cheap. Do have 3 sets of brand new iF edition Pistons with me just to spare and have not intention to sell at all, at least not at RM100 shakehead.gif

Beware of fakes!

Thanks for enlightening. Regardless of the price, I've already placed a deposit for a set from a forumer. I've been helping my friends who didn't manage to buy Xiaomi power banks at no cost too - but that's friends, so maybe that isn't the best example.

I got mine today and will give it a try and post more reviews soon.

The packaging is really neat and doesn't feel cheap. Especially like the rubberized case which let you to keep your Piston tidy without tangling the cable. The programmable volume up/down key seem to work with xiaomi phone only and doesn't work with my Nexus 4. Well at least the answer phone button still works. Might retire my SE215 with this since it has comes with a microphone too. Am not too particular with soundstage when traveling since I'm only listening to 320kbps mp3 on the move.

i have a pair of these. 2.0 rosegold

and i have a pair of the version 1.0, the bass is weird, muffled. just the kind of cheap earphone to replace original earphone of your smart phone.

also i have a pair of triplefi.

lets just say, this pair of rosegold is good enough, that i will not need to bring my triplefi out anymore.

with this price, most ppl can buy one pair, and skip all below rm800 earphones.

Yes beware of the fakes and only deal with proper xiaomi agent.

Woah, u mean u have to pay RM100 to get it in Malaysia? That's steep price. I see a business opportunity here cool2.gif

My rubberized case smells like chocolate, is this normal? lol

Is this as good as my SE215? Nope. Far from it. But on 320kbps setting, the Piston still provides a pleasure listening experience, good enough for my day-to-day travel requirement. And it comes with S-M-L sized earbud, sure you can find one that fits your eye.

oh ya, this is not bought from xiaomi Singapore hence not the IF edition. I guess I'm not missing much, just a black pouch, white english manual and the shirt clip with a IF design word engraved on it.

That's about it.

Am not too particular with soundstage when traveling since I'm only listening to 320kbps mp3 on the move.

well if the price is right I might be interested to take the SE215 off your hands tongue.gif

And it comes with S-M-L sized earbud, sure you can find one that fits your eye.

i have a pair of these.

Depends on what IEM/headphone you are comparing to.

Im going to get mine from a friend who receive Xiaomi delivery yesterday. Im not expecting miracle. Just wanna kill the hype.

Update 1:

Totally blew my expectation. I didn't expect it to be this bad, considering the rave review. It really prove my theory is correct. Maybe Mi3 is a bad companion. Going to try with Note 2 and Nokia 808 when I get home. I think I will try my go vibe v6 along to see if there's any improvement.

I'm beginning to wonder what sort of RM200 headphone people were comparing to. Those overpriced junk from Sony?

Update 2:

Plug it into my Mi3 but this time through GoVibe V6. Big improvement. However, I plugged in a N-years (I cant even remember) Mylar 1B and still gets better clarity. There is this strange veil that seem to affect the vocals. It just wont sing naturally. Using MiSoundEnhancer make it sounds too digital.

I can see why people like it. The instruments separation is pretty good, at least when its being amp'ed. You get lots of cymbal clarity playing on the outer sound field for example. I think the bass is really poor, when not amplified. If anything, it reminds me of the sound of Philips HP890. Very relaxing to listen as it has an awesome soundstage.

I think I will end my testing here. I think Xiaomi messed up somewhat with Piston2. Even their MiSoundEnhancer setting for Piston 2 proved it. You barely hear vocals clearly at all, when you are using it with Mi3, without any amplification. The size of the IEM also made it extremely uncomfortable, for me at least. The seal is pretty good, despite feeling it was a bit loose.

On a sidenote, I did tried it for 15minutes with my cousin's iPhone5. I think it powered it adequately and definitely sounds better than it was with Mi3. It was definitely better sounding than the radical iPhone5's earphone. I havent bought IEM/headphone for years, maybe nowadays even junk are priced over RM150. I dont know.. but I think Piston 2 is definitely hard to beat for RM100-150. Any higher, I think there should be choice.

I jz listen to XiaoMi Piston 2.1 with Samsung S3 (no EQ and no amp).

For small review;

1) Piston size got abit big, there for some people may b face fit in ear difficulties.
2) The sound quality of cause cant compete to those good brand such as sennheiser, Hippo, Sony but if say 50 bucks earphone, it can say not bad already.
3) Xiao Mi Piston perform good in treble and details but got a bit bassy in listen to instrumental song such as Kenny G, Kitaro.
4) Xiao Mi Piston perform well in Micheal Jackson song.
5) Xiao Mi Piston perform good in treble and details but got a bit bassy in listen to trance genre song such as Avicii, David Guetta.
6) Xiao Mi Piston perform good in treble and details but got a bit bassy in listen to KPOP genre song such as Big Bang, PSY.
7) Xiao Mi Piston perform good in treble , details and live performance in orchestra genre song.

For conclusion:
Xiao Mi Piston 2.1 version more suitable to person who like a bit bass head with good in details and treble by 50 bucks.

I think serious audiophile (does not need to be high end) should just forget Piston2 and move on to other offering.

I dont think I can say Piston2 is worthwhile if SQ is what you are seeking. Its probably worth the money but definitely not something that extra-ordinary.

I have them incoming this Monday.

Their FR measurements seems to indicate horribly boosted bass. I plan to do a pinhole mod on the back vent to see if that tames the bass a bit.

I got mine few days back.

first impression is the sound is not "balance" type. It is emphasis on the bass.
The mid and high is refine and detail compare to my old shure se102 and klipsch s4.
Instrument separation and soundstage is better than klipsch s4 and shure se102.
I find the bass is abit too much on certain song and could get out of control and bloat.

Overall the sound quality is at least as good as or better than iem with 3x more expensive.

The thing with Piston is, it's not an audiophile iem. Those who expect to pay rm50-100 and get an audiophile experience might be living in a world with care bears riding unicorns doing a Robin Williams' Phillip Seymour impression.

What you get with a Piston is better SQ than other competitors at similiar price bracket. Not to mention you have a microphone and remote too.

Piston's achilles heel is rock or fast kind music. It'll quickly loose its details. Stick to slow to medium tempo and you'll get a sound experience that you can hardly get with other remote IEM in the market within rm100.

i myself like the V shaped characteristics of triple fi. though sometimes i wish i can have more mid, especially when female vocal.

the tf10 is very analytical and wide sound stage.

when i put on xiaomi piston, i get more mids, which i enjoy very much. and i am surprised with the wide sound stage(due to its open back design)
due to its open back design, the bass is not too punchy( compared to my tf10) , but good enough for normal pop song. it is great for vocal.

instrument and orchestra kind, there are better iem out there laugh.gif

for MJ pop song, i like it on the tf10 thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Surprisingly SQ is quite good, way above the retail price. However i found the sound flat (not the sound signature) and lifeless compared to IEMs above the RM200 range

Update:

I went ahead with the filter mod since I was unimpressed with the sound since the beginning.

The pros?

1. Bloaty bass almost all gone.
2. The veil is removed from the vocal. Clarity improve a lot.
3. Brighter sounding now

The bad?

1. Instrument separation which is unique is almost, if not totally gone.
2. Can be harsh sounding sometimes.

If you asked me, I prefer the sound now. The original sound is like you added a LME49720 opamp kinda sound. Now the effect is a lot less but I prefer it.

Good, no doubt, but only because of the price.
There are plenty of options if you can pay full price. I didnt spent few hundreds or thousands on buying headphone but even so, I really felt it was so-so.

I own the soundmagic e10. Those rm135 IEMs are indeed magic. The piston 2.1 is too bassy and low trebles imo. Perhaps need to give it time to break in before the final verdict can be given. My wife loves bass heavy IEM's so i happily passed them to her. She said its definitely better than her samsung phone earphones. Good price value nevertheless la but i advice u read up reviews on the E10.

So I finally got mine. Initial impressions were horrible. They sounded like farting bass with mids about to disappear and highs totally missing.

Fixed the pistons with meelec biflanges. Sounds a lot better but still felt like woofers in front of my face.

I sealed off the back vent entirely and now the mids came forward and bass is controlled. No more bass bleed.

Verdict = Very enjoyable and well worth the RM50 if you have the right tips and back vent totally sealed(or pinhole mod).

Hi guys, saw something interesting in the review of Xiaomi Pistons on lowyat website..

I quote Andrew Tan :

China edition came with much clearer vocal with balance bass without distortion.
Malaysia edition somehow over bass and can notice vocal being cover sometimes with sligh distortion when full volume...

How true is this? Hmm..the no Chocolate smell is already one thing that makes me suspect our version of Pistons

But I have done it as well. It really remove the veil from the vocals, reduce the overpowering bass. You need to try it to experience the difference. Before mod, I think it sounds really bad.

Yeah, same here...

But I use needle to poke a hole and rip it out. I dont know why those guys in headfi use paper clips.

It sounds quite flat (not signature wise) with poor layering on AK240 with DSD files. It still sounds good for the price, but the flaws really shows with higher end source.

By basic you mean the normal gold v2.0/2.1 and premium as in the iF Edition?
Sorry haven't heard the iF Edition, but from what others have reviewed the sound quality is the same

That might be the older Version 1, based on reviews the gold V2 sounds better.
Why buy from Lazada? You can get it much cheaper directly from Xiaomi Malaysia.

Just got an 2.1 Malaysia version from sales.
It is way better then some headphone i used before, but then i didn't use much IEM so it might need somemore time to test.

The range is really clear for the price thought.

Is there any significance difference between the audio quality of the piston 2.1 vs the basic one?

By basic one i mean these.. http://www.mi.com/my/inEar-basic/

I'm not an audiophile by any means i just need an upgrade to my current almost broken samsung earphones. Will the 2.1 be worth the buy or should i go for the basic one for only Rm25?

I think I got a fake/malfunctioned 2.1 or the sound is not to my liking. Perhaps m40x even without eq or bass boost is already brimming with bass that it makes me think it's balanced.

Is piston balanced in term of sound delivery because i feel like there's not enough output from the lower frequency range?

Either your's is a fake/malfunction or you did not get a good seal with the stock tips.
All the stock tips cannot make it and I ended up using Ortofon tips which happened to cost more than the Pistons itself.

To me the 2.1 is tilted to bass-heavy IEM as the top end is rolled-off.
Being a dynamic driver with a vented designed, I find them to have more bass than what I would have called neutral

Wow. Im experiencing the opposite to what you've said. Gonna try with spare tips from lenovo iem (it came with the phone). If that doesnt work then i more might have to raise this issue with dealer. Thanks

Add: it's the tip alright. I changed it then wah, it's boomy. It's a keeper now. Tyvm

The mid bass of xiaomi3 is a tad bloated for my taste. Turns out to be not so natural compared to 2.0. Well but for this price point, it still offer the best price to quality ratio. biggrin.gif

Finally I was get my piston 2.1, the sound after turn to Hi-Fi mode quite impressive of the deep bass and noise cancelling.

This this my 1st fully aluminum body earbuds from Xiaomi lol, the sound quality quite clear and detailed too, at this price should be worth this.

Still have another 3 of Xiaomi pistons coming soon for my collection too, pro HD with 1more piston voice of China is compatible with my iPhone as well and piston 3.
