Microsoft is planning a Public Preview Beta of Windows Media Player 11 for XP on Wednesday, May 17th. Users will be able to download the beta here (anyone will be able to get it): http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx

The final RTM release is scheduled for late June 06 (I will try this week to get a date).

Here is a list of features that will and will not be in the XP version:

Features in WMP 11 for XP (June 06):

* New UI
* Support for better synchronization for portable devices
* Album "stacks" of album art
* Indexed libraries with search-as-you-type features
* User controlled downgrade of quality for DRM content to allow for smaller files
* DRM content will contain metadata that shows what the user is allowed to do with the file
* Includes Microsoft and MTV's Urge music store

Features in WMP 11 for Vista (Early 07):

* Everything that is in the WMP 11 for XP
* Playing content (including DRM) on your PC from another PC or device
* Viewing content from the Vista Media library on other PCs or digital devices, such as Tivo
* Playback of High Value video content
* Shell integration with Windows Media Player
* Content Indexer change notification to sync My Music and WMP library
* DVD Fullscreen playback enhancements
* DRM Transcode
* High quality video streaming over home networks
* Media foundation for playback

Will be awaiting this. Hope it isn't as resource hungry lik the previous media players and is more format friendly

softpedia provided a download link.. hmmm.. don't know how long this will stay, will MS asked them to pull down? Looks legit to me.

The installer has WGA. Extracted from the RAR is an installer package, similar to all popular MS installer packages. After running that EXE, files are extracted, and the installer is run.

Finally the beta is going to be out.... WMP 11 fans duneed to use those skin anymore to mod their WMP 10

memory used around 25000K. UI not bad, give the feel that you actually operate on Windows Vista.

loved the UI but it won't be my main media player..

WMP has been my main player for MP3 since version 9

But I guess I'll only download it once the release is final, it's not too long I guess

It will be cool if WMP can use WMP Classic features such as viewing subtitles etc.
since it's just beta I'll givit a try tho...
but consider it will not be main application to view movie and mp3.. except it's really COOL

subtitles works, either using srt file or idx, sub file

edit: spoke too soon, I did have directvobsub installed, that's why it works

wow! looks better than 10. time to update mine i guess.
IMHO 10 was the best media player if not for the system hogging, but it was MUCH better than Winamp. so I have high hope for 11

I use WMP only as my video player with properly installed DIVX and XVID codecs. For audio, I prefer fb2k.

that screenshot is from the leaked version, they're the same thing.. just different build.

to get that, just resize wmp11 (drag the corner)

go to lower right corner, drag it to resize

Just installed and in the testing it. Pretty cool UI and perhaps too exaggerated features with I found pretty useless to me.

i tried revert back to wmp 10, cannot....

my wmp11 cant play certain files... some codec missing....

just my 2sen worth!! v11 wmp is def a great improvement over v10. seems faster and better dvd quality ( using klite mega codec 1.53) ; no probs with playing files.

need to play around; with the settings; now playlist is even easier to manage.
did not really check memory usage. cheers

me either, is MP3(english & chinese) though
play and add into library with winamp, foobar and ttplayer without problem
e.g. winamp and ttplayer detected 5500 songs whereas WMP(9 & 10) 3800+ ......

My WMP11 run with 17k memory..while winamp juz 5k..
when i turn off all WMP equalizer,SRS effect and silent,its juz play around 10k memory..
But thats still to much with low quality sound...

WMP always consumes a lot of memory. That's why it's not my favourite audio player. fb2k can save a whole lot more with better output sound quality ...

how do u remove the play bar in full screen mode?

You meant the bar with those buttons (play, stop, pause) and etc.

It will goes off automatically after a while.

or else download tweak MP from the WMP site. it's for WMP9 originally but works with 10 and 11. u can set how long before the bar will be hidden. great addon too as it will not show the bar if ur mouse accidentally moves.

thanks for the help. yeap.. in wmp 10 it goes of after a few seconds but when i did my upgrade to wmp 11..it just stayed there in full screen. i will try the tweak mp . and see if it works

I also upgraded from WMP10 and that problem doesn't occur on my system. Strange ...

me too. the default seems to be 10 seconds like that before it dissappears. seems you might have pressed the spacebar, which will make the control bar stick

That is most probably because you're using a pirated WinXP
