What file is that?

It is impossible to achive that kind of compression ratio with the likes of video files and music files.

Yes, it depends on what file you have.

Multimedia files are usually encoded in a very compressed format and compressing it again won't help to reduce the file size much.

On the other hand documents like XLS or DOC can be compressed really a lot.

With exe or iso, it may work or it did not. You will just have to try by error.

A bit OT but since we are on WinRAR, is there a possibility to speed up the extracting process?

If that was an ISO of a game/application installer, there are chances that you can get good compression ratio. If that was an ISO of a movied DVD, chances of a good compression is slim.

it's depend on the thing u want to compress. TXT tend to compress better than Video file as they have different algorithm. instead of compressing that much, you can just split the files. much better IMHO

It really depends on the file type

How compression works? Basically by reducing repititive information.

Try duplicating a line "Lowyat.NET rocks" in notepad for 5000 times. The file size might be big but once you compress it the file size will become probably thousand times smaller.

How it works? There are various methods ; give you an easy-to-understand example, it could be the compressed file just stores "Lowyat.NET rocks * 5000" and processing will be done when you uncompress the file.

For encoded video files like RMVB, it is already encoded using other algorithm such that repeated information has been reduced to a very low level, hence when you compress it again you won't get much reduction in file size.

If you are really interested in knowing, why don't read wikipedia?

Did you mean after extracting out the files from the ISO it goes from 1GB to 4GB?

ever heard of KGB Archiver??

QUOTE
KGB Archiver is the compression tool with unbelievable high compression rate. It surpasses even such efficient compression tool like 7zip and UHARC in terms of the abilities. Unfortunately although its powerful compression rate, it has high hardware requirements (I recommend processor with 1,5GHz clock and 256MB of RAM as an essential minimum). One of the advantages of KGB Archiver is also AES-256 encryption which is used to encrypt the archives. This is one of the strongest encryptions known for human.

KGB Archiver

This software have insane compression ratio...it can compress 4gig to just 1.22mb... drool.gif

hmm... i don't really believe it that. If your source is video or mp3. U cannot compress like that. Unless your source is txt.

Just now i just do a test. i use that sofware compress my mp3. source is 6.1MB. After compress it's 5.8MB. I used winzip. AFter compress it's 5.9MB.

I don't think it will do any help with audio and video file smile.gif
