i see most people here are like in engineering... what about hse? do they command high salary as well?

I did my internship in an IT consulting company and yet able to join Oil and Gas company (operator) when I graduated.
It all depends on your soft skills and what kind of knowledge or best practices you gain from your internship that you can also make it work in the role you are going to be in...

I'm a Chem Eng too.

Chemical Engineering would be a good choice.. can be involved in all range of discipline from subsurface to process engineering to HSSE.
