Guys' I've been offered to work with kencana marine as fresh grad in lumut..what do you think of this career path. I heard the job is for project management for epcc of wheatstone project modules (70% site and 30% desk) and have to wear coveralls and stay in the yard. (I've always wanted to go offshore) My background is construction and what are my chances of going offshore? the HR from SK said there will be chance to go offshore, subject to operation requirement of SK ( I don't know what probability).

I'm currently working in a multidisciplinary consulting firm(mainly construction) and the pay is freaking good, permanent, good benefits, very nice working environment, good training and colleagues.

I'm having a hard time to decide now, since for now, SK is the only Oil and Gas company that called me. I have applied about 7 oil and gas companies.

My job now requires a lot of thinking and design structures, which is real engineering. My current boss is also an ir.

what is the income of an ir compared to a project manager in downstream oil and gas?
*
Firstly SK is a sub-con for the Wheatstone LNG project as the main EPCC is Bechtel.

And no you will never go offshore if you are placed in Wheatstone LNG plant(something like pengerang) project well thats somewhere around 4-5 years the project is expected to be done. You might go to australia being in the project team for interfacing but I highly doubt thats going to happen.

So SK is just a subcon..haha

The main con is Bechtel, I think it's fine to work with SK for the experience.. then there will be opportunities later in other epcc like o&m or jurong. What are your thoughts? what chances for civil engineers to be in the midstream/upstream industry, in engineering position, not as safety officer etc.
*
For experience yes I believe that kencana is good. But job prospect depends on position. Btw structural engineers are very much in demand at the moment.

Kencana does do EPC/C projects with its subsidiaries.

But fabrication and construction are basically downstream I am not sure where commissioning is clasified under.

owh okay. thanks. i will be based at offshore after my training. mine tell me how much does it cost?
*
Normally the company will pay for your training or they will forward you an advance for the amount.

At KLCC Medical Center for Petronas projects medical was about RM450-ish.... with Shell medical (shell requires the extra questionnaires for its projects) + another RM100++. Prices you can call the clinics to find out.The other operators I am not so sure.

I only heard of 3 centers in Malaysia for BOSIET OPITO approved, one of them is ALAM (Melaka), MSTS (Johor) and another one not sure Miri?

Come on la...i work for a shipping company and based at MMHE for 1 year now. The culture in MMHE is bad to the bone. There are scrapping off the bottom of the barrel. Now no more new job except Malikai and those lousy marine repair/ship drydocking work which will never turn a profit.

MMHE don't respect client....their customer. Also the corruption in this yard is like cancer. Buy safety sign for ship order from Greece. Just imagine. Pasar mlm also jual safety sign...u buy from Greece.

Many contractor now facing bankruptcy. No more job. MMHE also dont pay contractor payment. Even rental car given to Shell, MMHE dont pay then car rental company tarik the car...ekeke. This what happen. I work there 1 year already maa...
*
No wonder so many from MMHE joining sapukencang.

The safety sign they order from greece probably because a client requirement or something, sometimes that is the case.

Also I think all the main-contractors in Malaysia always pay their sub-contractors very late. Sometimes the salesman even beg to be paid.

Hi Otai-otai,

Do you guys know anything about being a Field Service Representative(FSR) in Dresser Rand? Appreciate your advise...

Thanks! smile.gif
*
DR got base in Malaysia?

As far as I know they are based in Singapore.

Quite a established vendor.

Hidz7,

You can get into O&G and if working on the malikai project then it is a very good experience which commercially is beneficial down the line.

Normally most companies will give you 1 year contract to view performance.

Butttt.....there is the daily jam if you are located at the yard.

QUOTE(Seager @ Jan 10 2014, 08:31 PM)
Hi guys. I have recently received a rather lucrative offer to join a downstream gas company in Malaysia. Basically a service and product provider, my position would involve project management (operations) as well as overseeing compliance issues with new and existing installations. I would also deal with HSE standards, costs, budgets, while dealing with various vendors etc. The basic salary is high, with generous employee benefits.

Another offer that I have received is from an upstream consultancy firm. It is basically a purely engineering design related job scope. The pay is slightly above the current market rate, however it pays roughly 1.5k lesser than the other employment offer. Their benefits are pretty much standard to other organizations within the same field.

Truth to be told, I am very confused indeed. The downstream gas offer is a very, very lucrative offer indeed. However, I am not familiar with this field. I hope any seniors here working in this field could provide me with some advice?
*
It is possible to move from downstream to upstream provided with the right skill-set.

It is also possible to move from design to field - also depending on skill set.

Downstream project engineers can move to upstream as the main job scope is pretty much the same but this depends on your future employers interpretation and job requirements.

Your upstream job post is a mystery so cant provide any advice there.

You should remember that somethings have short-term benefits and long-term benefits and company names also have a bearing with other employers. So keep that in mind when making your decisions.

in fact 1 Manager post was 3.3 times but rejected 2 weeks ago, the offer letter was prepared from Doha but position based in KL office with SEA travel.
am looking some thing much bigger and wider at present.

lot of fresh/other industry enthusiasts wanna join o&g but require people to spoon feed.
if one wanna earn it, pls go explore yourself your own strengths, weaknesses, the market demand in qualifications and experience, put in your own efforts, etc and find out how to proceed. that was how i was taught via US distance learning compared to my degree from malaysia.

try to work out professional certs that will match equivalent to your experience as building up your CV.

Hi sifus, i am final semester student at local university seeking for 5 months internship in order to graduate on July 2014. Would anyone care to help me finding internship opportunity at any oil n gas company. I have done academic study and able to start immediately. Below are my credentials and qualifications.

Education background : bachelor's degree in aircraft engineering
Cgpa : 3.78
Qualification : ASNT level 2 in Ut, Mt and Lpi.
Reason to jump into oil and gas industry: Not interested with aviation industry.

I really really really appreciate if anyone could help me. Thank you so much.

Yeah. I had done many researchs and a lot of applications. But none of companies interested to offer me. That's why i need help from sifus aroud here. Haha. I thought high cgpa can easily secure a job. But it seems hopeless. Haizzz. I feel down right now. Anyway, thx smile.gif)

In bold what ch_teo said is very true, know what you want first before embarking on your job finding. Many graduates just randomly come out and say hey I heard oil and gas pays the highest pay in the job market and try to get in. Do you know that O&G is not the only highest paid industry? Do you know that many malaysian waters offshore engineers earn less that what my fellow banker friends make some with only SPM working in the office (I am talking in annual pay wise)? but eventually those who are good in the O&G industry fight hard earn what they make often after endless sacrifices and hours of personal time which some people can never comprehend.

Wolf91 with ASNT (if not an in house cert) I am pretty sure many NDT companies and fabrication yard with in-house services will be willing to take you in mostly on downstream (lower pay---yeah sometimes RM1k basic are you willing?) and some will maybe pay you for offshore construction (normally not for freshies because client requirements etc...) but in the inspection side any experience is good experience. Alternatively you can try on the upstream segment of NDT but very rare cases as I only know a few companies that do this. Service companies well if you get in good if you don't then you need to start considering other options with will fit into your career goals. Many companies out there you can google and search don't only target the famous famous ones and operators.

Thanks for the reply. Will look into several companies to book my BOSIET course asap. Correct me if i'm wrong , but MIS-BOSET(or is it M-BOSET?) cert is only eligible for offshore in Malaysia whereby BOSET is internationally ?
*
Roughly:

BOSIET is certified by OPITO (Oil Petroleum Industry & Training Organisation)
MBOSIET is certified by PMU (Petronas Management Unit)

1. If you have BOSIET certificate you can work offshore to anywhere excludes North Sea and Malaysia. (not sure regarding the exception)
2. If you have MBOSIET certifictae you only can work offshore at Malaysia.

For NDT :

1. MPI/DPI
2. RT
3. UT

Suitable of you are willing to become a freelancer , that mean, you drop  your contact number t ndt service company and they will call you if they got job on daily basis. Permanent post also available but usually permanent pay lower. My advise, if you have much money or you know someone that could give you smidec letter , go for inspection course i.e : CSWIP 3.1 , PCN Welding inspection level 2. You can go for inspection tech job in petronas plant or any o & g contractor or you also can go for freelancer but for much longer contract ( project/ turnaorund )..

If you want a secure, less pressure job, go for safety course.

Best practice, grad, get job as technician or assistant engr. in o & g company , grab some experience, decide what you are most suited  then go or cert..  you will pass the cert easier..
*
CSWIP 3.1 might not take you in as you do not have the experience. Go for 3.0 work 2 years than apply for 3.1.

I dont think without NDT experience you can be a free-lancer unless you know people. Apply for permanent first. Best to take MPI as carbon steel is the most commonly used material in the O&G industry.

For welding cert CSWIP is more reputable and for NDT PCN certs are the most reputable.

Try puspatri or something they have those free courses...

try to get job as technician or work under those mill-wrights or start off as a roughneck/helper is another possibility.

Agreed on CSWIP 3.1, one can apply for the course (there are pre-requisites) but may not be approved by the body if without proper and adequate qualifications and experience.
recently, there are more & more NDT companies set-up but in order to sustain in the market in term of longer period?

inconel and chrome materials at critical areas of subsea equipments is the way to the future, can refer to API 5CRA on types of NDT to be performed on chrome materials. there is a potential of higher PI reserve if there is higher CO2 but higher challenges during drilling and there come the inconel and chrome playing their parts in casing/tubing. MPI may not be suitable for inconel and chrome, subject to ASTM and customer's requirements.
*
Not sure about the increase in NDT companies.

Inconel, duplex etc are more exotic type materials/CRA hence expensive and lesser used which brings me to the conclusion that carbon steel is still the most used material (structure and piping considered).

Basic in NDT is type of material and type of defect to find. Ferrous and non ferrous materials have different types of testing and so does the defect types. as my memory fails me in NDT cant really advise much more than this.

Because each course cost to 3-5.5k each I would suggest to get a MPI cert first which is somewhat (not guaranteed) easier to get jobs. DPI ---- if possible get in house certification ASNT LV-II. RT go to AELB test center in bangi for MLVK level 1 or straight take the interpreter course (without AELB course and badge no working with the radioactive material). UT well you can ask TWI about it.

thanks man. Yeah I should specify that im more on an EPCI construction contractor; jackets & topsides engineering, fabrication and installation, subsea installation, pipelaying etc etc (No downstreams involved).. Such companies that have similar workscopes (which im one of them) are technip, saipem, mcdermott, subsea7, aker, etc....

Drilling is out of the question btw haha  tongue.gif

Well, we dont need to source for a very specific one, as mostly these certificates requires years of specialization skills that we lack. We look forward for one that is not complicated to finish, and junior-friendly. if you can list down those you know, that'll be great too thanks..
doh.gif .

What scope of work are you looking at? QC?Safety?Technical?Skilled?.......etc etc... See what I mean.

http://www.twi-global.com/ best training provider in most cases for construction and marine related matters.

My best advice to you guys.....ask the right questions and you will get the right answers.

The Wheatstone project itself is not as tough as you think it is. The problem is the people.

Any advice for a new comer to work there?

Firstly remember the bestwide guy's post in this thread....regarding the cons....Everyone of it is true.

Secondly if you are in Wheatstone project you will be doing it until the second train sails away, contractually you cant be part of two project at the same time hence if you're in the construction team you are stuck in this project for a very long time.....but if you're in engineering I think you will leave the project earlier once engineering support is done.

Remember as a fresh grad never reveal any info to your client without written approval from your direct boss. Better yet just ask the client straight go see your boss......this project dont pandai pandai it might come back to bite you.

+ Prepare for headache in getting information or anything done (more than normal)-----well this is typical kencana anyway.

+ Procedures are most of the time for show case (well unless something happens then everyone refers to it whistling.gif )

Most of this is public knowledge anyway.

By the way wheatstone ISBL is 45 modules as the tendering doc goes....kencana has subbed half of the modules to a chinese company. Kencana is doing all the big ones....you can see just across the project office.

But if you ask me if the experience is worth it or not......that depends on what position you are offered as the experience alone covers all the cons.

Ya. I will involve in the wheatstone project as stated in my agreement.

But I have learnt that Kencana is a good place as stepping stone for fresh grads in O&G industry. Is it wrong?
Btw, my hometown is in selangor. my plan is to gain my working experience from there for 3-5years and returned to selangor. Hopefully I am able to survive for these period.

My future supervisor who interviewed me, did ask my ability in mandarin speaking, reading and writing as i will deal with client from china kinda thing.
And he asked my ability to work under critical working environment, as my job would be mostly outdoor and on certain height location. seems tough...
*
In general Kencana is a very good stepping stone....well depends on what position you're in.

The rest I will PM you info.

Yup, same problem across the entire Kencana from what I heard(getting worse by the year as the older ones say). Sapura side is fairing better though. So I guess the merger didn't do much but bought directorial changes only.
