Hi guys. I have recently received a rather lucrative offer to join a downstream gas company in Malaysia. Basically a service and product provider, my position would involve project management (operations) as well as overseeing compliance issues with new and existing installations. I would also deal with HSE standards, costs, budgets, while dealing with various vendors etc. The basic salary is high, with generous employee benefits.

Another offer that I have received is from an upstream consultancy firm. It is basically a purely engineering design related job scope. The pay is slightly above the current market rate, however it pays roughly 1.5k lesser than the other employment offer. Their benefits are pretty much standard to other organizations within the same field.

Truth to be told, I am very confused indeed. The downstream gas offer is a very, very lucrative offer indeed. However, I am not familiar with this field. I hope any seniors here working in this field could provide me with some advice?

i was 3 years plus as ME consultant in high-rise building and infra works before switch to OCTG. coming 6 years in OCTG industry now. since last year have been able to get 4 offers with 2-3 times of my present basic but just rejected. 2 of these 4 were head hunted. 2 of these were through phone interview multiples times and succeeded with offer letters.
2 more coming after CNY.

it is about how an individual adapt to the new industry and churn out what have been learnt in previous roles to contribute to the new environments.
with a degree in mechanical, i topped up with drilling engineering, well control cert, some professional certs by company and self along these 6 years. currently, in progress top up with subsea engineering.

in fact 1 Manager post was 3.3 times but rejected 2 weeks ago, the offer letter was prepared from Doha but position based in KL office with SEA travel.
am looking some thing much bigger and wider at present.

lot of fresh/other industry enthusiasts wanna join o&g but require people to spoon feed.
if one wanna earn it, pls go explore yourself your own strengths, weaknesses, the market demand in qualifications and experience, put in your own efforts, etc and find out how to proceed. that was how i was taught via US distance learning compared to my degree from malaysia.

try to work out professional certs that will match equivalent to your experience as building up your CV.

For fresh graduates, try to ask for RM4k per month. Even fresh graduates in PETRONAS nowadays could get starting at RM5k.....

is it worth resigning from my current job as a mechanical designer (with electronic equipment based manufacturing company) and take a job offer with o&g consultant company? even with the potential of salary cut, i kind of fancies to take the o&g offer as it is what i want to be involved in. but risk losing good references from my current boss. only almost 4 months working out of 1 year bond, i find it hard to breach the contract..

I am currently working with one of power plant service companies. My job scope is specifically on Gas Turbine. I am currently bonded for the next few years. I am okay with my job now. the thing is, I am influenced by the fact that the drilling can offer much more better salary and brighter future. So I need taiko here to advice me, whether I should just stay in my current company and develop myself as rotating engineer, or jumpship, and become driller. Is it worth to switch my direction now and pay the bond (its quite a lot)?

Small tip here.last year khl paid less than 1 month bonus.

that's not true if you're in the Client's side..bonus is 6 months average...thats why ppl still enter....hoping to gain experience and finally move on to bigger better companies...
