mata lacking in speed. he'll never be a robben. i see mata as a link between the mazacar combo. the one who create oppurtunity to both oscar and hazard. and also for striker. u can see the number of assist he made for the last two seasons.

+ we miss mata during set piece. our set piece like super poor.

looks like torres is not interested anymore to play striker,
i usually think of him like a playmaker when mata is not there.

If we are opt for playing slow build up and more attacking in the middle Mata will be a good choice, JM is trying to open up opponent by using Wide player, Mata style is suited Drogba era, because we dont have any Striker like Drogba, FT, Ba & Eto'o is no way like Drogba, so wide play will be better choice to break opponent defence, in the mean time Striker just to pull the opponent CB is more advance area therefore the no. 10 shall score most of the goal.

Just like Fulham game, their defensive tactic is forcing us to play more in the middle, that is the reason JM start Schurrle because he provide more wide attacking option, 1st goal came from left hand side wide area, then Fulham starting to break their defence because they are 1 goal down and try to equalize

our trio is the key for this formation..put any striker I think also the same effect..

agreed. my understanding based on JM statement, he want mata to play wide role on the right. meaning always dribble wide and low/high cross instead of cutting inside to middle. Jose may wanted something similar like robben speed, but mata does not have that speed.

Jose tactical, he want the wide player to drag the defender out from the box, hence more space for striker.

Why mata on the wide right? Jose mentioned it before, he believed left footed player are suitable to play on the right. For example see Schurle & KDB. mostly start on right side.

Clearly Jose has a plan for mata and oscar to play together, he just need mata to be more agressive, pressing opponent, track back when losing a ball. Could be 4-1-4-1 when it happen.


..... to think about it, I hardly recalled Mata do any tackle/hard challenge.

in term of attacking/ assist, mata is second to none. i don't think mata will be a good winger. a winger need speed, and that's what mata lacking. attacking player shud not be judge on number of tackle they made. same goes to defender, they can't be judge on the number of goals/ assist they made.

thats why Jose said it's up to Mata to raise up his game up to Jose expectation/game plan/tactical.
Jose need someone that can provide full package in terms of attacking & defending. Hence, Oscar is Jose favourite #10 now.

we all totally have no doubt on Mata attacking ability.

this is similar case with Luiz, he want to attack/go up, he need to go down as fast possible.
currently all players are adapting to new Jose style.
