I still remember that when the decision was being made on who the next Chelsea manager would be many Chelsea fans concluded that Mourinho wouldn`t be the right choice.
Some Barcelona fans in disguise (I`m not naming names) started a propaganda war against our Special One.
• Mourinho will spend loads and loads of money they said.
• Mourinho doesn`t like youth players they said.
• Mourinho won`t like our creative players because he likes 'kick and run' football they said.
Obviously this infuriated me. For someone who has followed his career for over a decade this was felony.
The English media smarty pants also decided that Emenalo and Mourinho would not co-exist because of the power struggle that happened between Real Madrid`s technical director Valdano and Mourinho which ultimately culminated in the sacking of Valdano. But what they fail to realize that unlike Valdano, who was the architect behind spending £150million+ on three players and not doing squat for the youth team, Michael Emenalo is actually good at his job.
Mourinho appreciates quality work and Emenalo`s record in the last couple of years speaks for itself. Good technical directors are hard to find these days and Jose knows this. Take Damien Comoli's disastrous stint with Liverpool for example. Spending insane money on Carroll, Downing and Henderson is hardly genius. When Fenway Sports Group gave Liverpool a £100 million kitty to get them back on track, it was an excellent opportunity for Liverpool to get 5-6 quality players and come straight back into the top 4. But now the owners are still smarting from the blows of failure and Rodgers is playing with peanuts to lure players.
I don`t know how far Emenalo`s offer to resign was true because I basically distrust the English media, they might not be outright liars like their Spanish counterparts but they not reliable at all. But it was also reported that Mourinho dismissed the offer of resignation. Now whether this is true or not one thing has proved to be certain, Mourinho has thrown his full weight behind Michael Emenalo. Andre Schurrle has been a Chelsea target for 2-3 years which can only mean he was an Emenalo target and not that of any one manager.
I also am sure Mourinho didn`t have the time to watch Vitesse Arnhem week in week out for the last 2-3 years to zero in on Van Ginkel. These were done by Michael Emenalo. So what Emenalo does with his scouting team is identify the best young talent, scout them, look at their behavioural history, alcohol and drug history, injury history, medical history, collect video tapes and then they shortlist and Mourinho obviously watches some tapes before giving a go ahead.
But it doesn`t stop there, Jose uses 'Brand Mourinho' to seal the deal. In both the Schurrle and the van Ginkel deal Mourinho got involved personally to tie it up. Two other Emenalo buys Lukaku and De Bruyne have also been told in no uncertain terms that he wants them. Mourinho`s timely intervention put an end to Dortmund`s tapping up of De Bruyne and countless managers wet dreams about loaning out Lukaku.
It is on this basis we can be sure not only have Michael and Jose formed a partnership but that the partnership is working really well. Mourinho has prevented a 19 year old from going out on loan, a 20 year old from being sold, signed a 23 year old German and a 20 year old Dutchman.
Suddenly the words of the resident Mourinho critics on VC are proving to be exactly what they are - a big pile of horse dung!
