Thanks to horns for this Guide
1. Checking CPU/GPU temperature is essential, but it’s better to test it on games (have fun) instead of doing synthetic test (gpu/cpu benchmark). Take your own sweet time (within the 7 days grace period) and if something went amiss get one-to-one exchange from where you bought it. 2. Check all the common hardware parts that is being used normally (i.e. screens for dead pixel, speakers, keyboard keys, touch pad, rog button, card reads, keyboard backlit, fn keys, usb ports, hdmi/vga/mini display port, wifi and lan, headphone jack, dvd/blu-ray rom etc.) Do check the system info/hwinfo to see whether the specs are exactly as what you are paying for. Other than that run ram test (memtest86+); run it overnight and check results when you wake up in the morning 3. Bios, if there’s nothing wrong with it leave it running stock (there’s no need for an upgrade) 4. Update drivers as updates are usually meant for good things (most of the times) especially Graphic driver as it will support latest games. 5. Getting SSD? Perform clean install is recommended as it has lower chances of heading towards sleepless nights trying to fix. For win8 run disk optimization to trim drives, perform restart, turn of display and leave it til morning this is for system-wide SSD optimization (only after clean If anyone wants to add or saw any misleading guide do let me know This post has been edited by holloway: Dec 13 2013, 08:12 PM |

QUOTE(xandman @ Jun 15 2013, 09:35 AM) depending on your needs, it might be worth to get (, or not). it's mainly about regular maintenance and upgrade abilities:1. it has a good cooling system. it's cool and silent. the stock cooling system should be able to cope with up to i7 3840qm cpu (afaik, the cpu is still a PGA package, not BGA package; meaning you have the choice to switch cpu's. BGA is soldered cpu's). 2. it is a smaller form factor; it should be convenient for you to carry it around; of all the asus gaming laptops, the mobility of this laptop is relatively much better (only 2.5kg with battery); 3. if it's used for common work purposes, it might be powerful enough to last for the next 2 to 3 years (if it comes with i7 cpu then it's good enough). there is nothing noticeable between a ivy-bridge and haswell in terms of performance imo if you're talking about common usage. as for gaming, the 660m is fine for less demanding games; but not for current resource-hogging games. now some short comings: 1. support service: this might be a problem to you. many said the after-sales tech support sucks; only one said they have good tech support; however if you are experienced, you can manage it yourself. there are some good tear-down guides for your reference. alternatively, get it from local sellers like illegear, but please make yourself aware of service charges and shipping costs that their service will cost you (but i believe they will charge reasonably). 2. self maintenance: it's compact, so it's relatively hard to do regular cleaning up (fans, vents). yes you can get it done at service center, but see above. 3. upgrade abilities: from what i've read, the ram is up to 16gb (2x 8gb; 2 ram slots); the laptop has an mSATA slot (for mSATA ssd's). the problem is, there is no place holder for a screw to secure it. 4. battery: to take it out, you need to do some dis-assemblies first. g46, like other g-series, is a good laptop. if it runs fine for the first few weeks without glitches, it's probably relatively defect-free for the rest of its shelf life. make sure you check all the common hardware right after you have purchased it (cpu/gpu temperatures under load; screen; ports - usb, hdmi, minidisplay/thunderbolt, headphone jacks, wifi; keyboard lights; all fn key combos, battery charging, etc.) this is a typical step you should do for all your electronics. if you found defects, straight away go and find the sellers for one-to-one exchange. still, you have other choices. i would suggest you look around. the price tag on a g46 is relatively expensive if you compared the specs alone. for wifi card, my advice is to use an external dongle (i think it's cheaper than MYR 150.00); unless if you wanna spend MYR 300.00+ for killer bigfoot wireless-n wifi card (the only ones that i think work fine :/)
1. 1202 (2 antennas; dual band; with bluetooth) 2. 1103 (3 antennas; dual band; wifi only; from our friend at ROG forum, 1103 can reach 300mbps with the stock 2-antenna setup in the laptop). forget about intel 6235 or 6300. the driver has issues (i tried almost all of them); or there is something wrong at the bios level (wifi white listing). edit: to install wifi card is simple: 1. make sure you take a picture of the positions of black and white wires; 2. take off the keyboard and display panel (the display panel blocks part of the card); 3. take off the wires; 4. replace the card; 5. put the wires back on; 6. put the display panel and keyboard back to their positions. QUOTE(Heroez @ Jun 16 2013, 09:34 PM) currently there is no news on g46 and g55 refreshes yet (the current g46 just started to populate the local market; i saw it when i was at lyp just now). however from the trend, asus is beginning to solder cpu's even to their 17.3" gaming laptops. it's very likely that those refreshes have soldered cpu's. i think you should wait for a bit to find that out (well, that is, if you wish to switch cpu's. the current version can let you go up to 3840qm). |

neh.. if they took the effort to solder the cpu.. of course.. the gpu aswell.. lol
Well it's sometime a form factor, whether we can upgrade it or not. Although i do have to agree quite a number that bought upgradable cpu/gpu doesn't do any upgrades but the thought that they can do so will put them at ease. Human it's all about satisfaction~.. lol |

rumors said g46vr is already on the way (found at some European websites). found some screenshots too (but i'm not sure if they are real or just seo pranks). whether it's legit or not, not sure.
1. cpu is still 3630qm; 2. gpu changed to 760m. usually asus support website will give us clues whether the said models are to be released in near future. for instance, the existence of g750 was denied but apparently it's on the way previously; when you can find the support page of that model, it's very likely the news is legit. rumors also said intel is pushing partners to release devices with BGA packages :/ but again, it's up to the manufacturers. to me putting a BGA package in a gaming laptop is still not a good decision. finally, rumors said there is no g55 anymore. note that the above are all rumors. don't believe anything until they're proven to be true. edit: .. and it's not only us. many complained about soldered cpu's. QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Jun 17 2013, 12:05 PM) You mention that 6235 have driver issue or bio wifi white listing issue, hmm.... you are correct. after looking around for clues and hints, i found out many are still having problems with 6235 and 6300. many pointed the root cause to be the drivers (but i suspect it might be other factors involved). that's why i do not recommend this to you.anyway what window you r using? fyi the issue is the connectivity not being stable (fluctuates randomly). some run at very low speed. yeah i am still using 6235 for a number of reasons: 1. to me i don't feel any degradation of wifi access (not like others; many reported that it's below 40mbps; it's not in my case); 2. i am having 150mbps to 270mbps connection speeds. it's fine for me even if it doesn't reach the full 300mbps. running 8. edit: .ac wifi adapters have been released, like in certain models of g75vx. new aw 17 is using .ac adapter, too. maybe you can search for broadcom 4352, 4360 too. QUOTE(horns @ Jun 17 2013, 09:19 AM) rumors said g46vr is already on the way (found at some European websites). found some screenshots too (but i'm not sure if they are real or just seo pranks). whether it's legit or not, not sure. Yeah i also see on european website.. now i'm wondering why is it on european website.. asus is now based on europe? lol.. why do they get the info first? and it seems that some web even have prices around 12XX euro? lol but no stock available1. cpu is still 3630qm; 2. gpu changed to 760m. usually asus support website will give us clues whether the said models are to be released in near future. for instance, the existence of g750 was denied but apparently it's on the way previously; when you can find the support page of that model, it's very likely the news is legit. rumors also said intel is pushing partners to release devices with BGA packages :/ but again, it's up to the manufacturers. to me putting a BGA package in a gaming laptop is still not a good decision. finally, rumors said there is no g55 anymore. note that the above are all rumors. don't believe anything until they're proven to be true. edit: .. and it's not only us. many complained about soldered cpu's. of course. it's a buying factor.. even though i probably wouldn't upgrade now (but now i'm thinking if i can upgrade my GPU) i would surely go for it.. since the 660M seems like a beast with the fangs kena cabut.. not so scary anymore.. lol QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Jun 17 2013, 09:36 AM) Thanks for the tips. Looks like placing thermal will reduce some temp, but not much like PC. Unless there's way to delid the CPU & GPU. Of course, PC cooling other than the thermal paste, the cooling system also u can customize according to what u need.. liquid coolant and stuff.. and somemore the heat dissipation from CPU already affect the GPU and vice versa. whereas for PC u can clearly see there is alot of space for the heat to dissipate and won't effect each other. Laptop with a few degrees drop in temp is considered really good already since it will help to sustain the lifespan abit more and of course maintain it's peak performance I dun understand what you mean by getting external dongle. Mind to explain more? Do u know where to get killer bigfoot wireless-n wifi card at malaysia? |

QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Jun 18 2013, 10:53 AM) looks cool, does it work better than other benchmark tool? hehe benchmarking just allows us to do comparisons to reference scores. there is nothing fancy about it. whether it's better or not, that depends on what you're looking for. to me, for realbench, it's based on the predefined workloads, rather than synthetic tests; i just think it makes more sense. Not really sure how to configure ram disk, how big is ur ram? i have 32gb of ram. 16gb of it is ram disk. my favorite is softperfect ramdisk. |

Anyone experiencing artifacting on G53SX? When my GPU heats up to around 70 degrees (under gaming), the blacks turn to a flickering red, and whites turn to flickering teal. So take a dark, horror game for example, the entire screen will be red instead of black / dark colours
I've tried updating, downgrading & also using the ASUS official GeForce drivers to no avail. I also found out I can't manually control the fans in this notebook so I can't use RivaTuner or MSI Afterburner or the likes. I have to far gone up to dismantling the back panel and blowing cold air using a hairdryer thru it (no dust came out). Will this mean I need to repaste it? I don't have confidence to dismantle the entire thing including the LCD to access the GPU heatsink... Other than that the laptop functions normally, and without load the GPU runs at about 45-50. |

I didn't back up my data at all i think for cpu it's fine. but for gpu, there are some dies near the gpu. if i had time i sure help :/ it's likely the issue of cmos battery. it's better to get it done at service center first :/ |

QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Jun 20 2013, 11:21 AM) well, good luck! as a prevention, you might wanna take the photos of the laptop (whatever you can think of; side view, front view, top view, rear view, etc.) it's especially important to take notes on where the grills are exposed (rear view, vents, etc.) this way you can check it out for external anomalies later. |

beware for new haswell machines: the voltage of the ram is now 1.35v. ram that need 1.5v (common ones that can be found in the local market) are very likely to cause troubles later (over heating, damage to the cpu integrated memory controller (due to the increased potential difference), and increased battery use).
damn.. it's in the specs of the cpu :/ |

I got a Asus G55, I thinking of changing the harddisk to SSD. The brand I'm looking at is Crucial M500 480GB. Is it good enough? The reason i choose it is because I can buy it from the crucial online store.

I just realize when u ask is it good enough, u might want to do a bit of reading regarding the stuff u want to buy. Some people will tell you, SSD is just an SSD everything will be the same~. Totally agree, especially when u ask opinion of ppl which is selling those PC stuff. mostly they wana do is push out the old stock, will not recommend you to buy the new thing they r selling tho. Do more research b4 you planned for a purchase. second.. maybe broaden up a bit your variety of choices? or do you have specific preferences towards the crucial. thirdly.. Since we r in mobile computing thread, it makes me think that way oh.. imo for the sake of discussions let's us do not limit ourselves to the keywords, 'mobile computing' only. if i really needed to stick to those topics to the letters, i really have nothing to discuss already (as of now, high mobility means low performance, relatively; there is not much to discuss lol!). i might as well go else where BTW, if you play waterblock in your rig i just think that it's a nice idea that an external gpu can be used to replace our aging gpu. with this accessory, we don't need to worry about whether the gpu on our laptop is of custom form factor or soldered, and we can just get one and use it for all sorts of low-powered laptops. if i have a desktop rig, eGPU is pointless |

Like me tell me about it coz my next laptop isn't gonna be worth around 4k instead i might go as far as 7k or 8k.. i seriously think if i need raw power going for desktop rig would be more cheaper compared to buying a laptop .. try comparing a 4k laptop vs a 4k desktop Totally agree with the 'high mobility means low performance' terms and a laptop is a one time bomb...whilst a desktop u can add here and there according to ur finance |

QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Jun 26 2013, 11:59 AM) Totally agree with the 'high mobility means low performance' terms hehe for those equipped with thunderbolt i think they can provide enough cpu power. true, desktop is more fun to play with. if you have deep pockets there are even more fun QUOTE(holloway @ Jun 26 2013, 12:23 PM) yeah thats what my point exactly.. thunderbolt has only around 30GB/s bus speed whilst pci-e 2.0 around 128Gb/s and pci-e 3.0 doubles that~ or around that.. but for laptop having a egpu means a solution for Asus also.since they really like to solder the GPU and CPU.. exactly and speaking about mobile computing straight brings me to . limited ram, low TDP to save battery life and of course sucky gpu. those 11 inchers 13 inchers~ lol tell me about it coz my next laptop isn't gonna be worth around 4k instead i might go as far as 7k or 8k.. i seriously think if i need raw power going for desktop rig would be more cheaper compared to buying a laptop .. try comparing a 4k laptop vs a 4k desktop and a laptop is a one time bomb...whilst a desktop u can add here and there according to ur finance i got the g55 because it had enough juice to meet my needs and can ease my itches (self upgrades): it's for mobility; it's cool and quiet; and have enough ram slots (and it allowed cpu upgrades). along the way until it dies, i wish to dissect and add more juice to it (hence, my g55 today). i didn't bother about gpu because i don't game much (but i wish to have the chance to switch). everyone wanna have the 'best'; but we all know that title can only last for a few months, looking at the rate of how manufacturers release their new stuff these days. although it's good to ease my itches, i sometimes think asus might be right in someway in terms of producing units of soldered cpu / gpu. BUT, the first thing they should do is to solder a high-end cpu / gpu if they wanna keep the name of 'gaming laptops' and premium price tags. by the way, i am well aware of potential issues of self upgrades, like bad battery life. again, that depends on how you plan your upgrades. for instance, with all my current upgrades (3 ssd's, 3820qm cpu, and 32gb ram), i still can use my laptop for 2 hours (high performance power profile) with battery only. i don't need to have more than that period of battery life. @tonberry_ax is right, the better way to ease my itches is to get a desktop |

QUOTE(mansooriqbal @ Jun 26 2013, 10:08 PM) which is why AMD processor with a AMD 7970M is dirt cheap. To be honest, not worth more than 2kRM for that. yeah thats just bad actually. Pity AMD couldn't come up with a better CPU/APU. the GPU itself has driver issues well most are fixed but still there is room for improvement. Don't know where they went wrong~ |

before you do anything, back up all data from your partitions in the laptop. it's tedious but it's better safe than sorry.
if you didn't mess with the default partitions (meaning, you are using stock w7/w8 that comes with the laptop; never upgraded before), you should be able to call out asus f9 recovery to restore the OS partition. just press f9 on boot. after that, you can create a set of dvd recovery dvd's for future use. if you're talking about clean install, then just use a w7/8 install media and during the setup part format your c: partition, before proceeding to install windows. there are many tutorials out there, if you're in doubt. |

So my wild guess is 314.22 nvidia driver is the most stable at the moment. Coz 320.18 WHQL is a gamble.. and the latest 320.49 although sounds promising, but~

QUOTE(holloway @ Jun 27 2013, 10:06 AM) its ok i'll do that. Who says it don't? Its easy to know its stable or not, the program not hang there means is stable. stress gpu for 15 min can't justify anything. The test need to do like 2 hour to prove its stability. Well is kinda painful to wait, |

And also while benchmarking u need to stare at the screen for 2 hours to see if there is any artifact~ because stability doesn't mean the program hang only~ thats just for the scores. but if you're playing games u will need to stare at the screen while playing games and yeah see artifacts along the way.Well is kinda painful to wait, |

Ofc some benchmark is calculate score, some is to stress system performance, depends on what kind of thing u wana test ofc U can do test up to 3 days, its all up to u lol |

I'd rather play games for days instead of benchmarking for days. No point doing it. I'm not writing a full review. QUOTE(horns @ Jun 27 2013, 11:21 PM) from the ama session with asus reps, the way they responded were funny; it's like skipping most questions about BGA, soldered cpu, and custom gpu. damn. Yeah i do realize it through after scrolling several pages haha.. WTF man WTF. G750 question.. skipped.. VGA being core lock .. skipped .. people disappointed with their product.. skip~ those easy2 question are the ones answered. I could be an ASUS rep. just skip the whole lot and answer those damn easy question. |

apple mba is really power this season. one mba already take up 56% market share in the US (same category as ultrabooks).
the difference between the previous version and the new one is just minor changes. |

QUOTE(ahteo9292 @ Jul 2 2013, 09:29 PM) yeah some of us do that. if you're not experienced in tearing down the laptop, it's a time-consuming task (you need to do that to get to the fans and expose the fins). it's better to send it in to asus service center for service. |

QUOTE(ahteo9292 @ Jul 3 2013, 01:40 PM) from my limited experience and tests, 1) for cpu: tuniq tx-4, artic silver 5, or ic diamond. tuniq tx-4 is the easiest to apply because it spreads easily, and has no curing time. note that arctic silver 5 has a long curing time (up to 200 hours); to apply this one it's better you dip the tube into hot water for some time before you apply it. for ic diamond, it has curing time of 2 hours. 2) for gpu: although those 3 can be used for gpu, i use prolimatech pk3 instead. for gpu, do the dot method; for cpu, you need to do a 'rice' method (although AS5 asked us to do spread method but a rice method actually works too). |

I saw a lot complaining about notebook temp..especially during intensive gaming..am owning G53JW-A1, the very first version of G53..nearly 3 years old..bought it from GenTechPC..still running fine..i rarely shut my computer down as far as i can remember, exclude auto shut after OS updates etc..am not sure about the latest version and design but I still remember one of the most popular rep told me not to bother with any notebook cooler (with the G53)..i have to admit ASUS service is the worst here but IMO Asus ROG has the best cooling system as it is..if ur lucky enough to get one flawless unit when purchasing..i do clean the dust, fan etc like once a year..that's it..and why repaste when the notebook is still running in considerably good temp??? do it when it is necessary lads..u want proper cooling..get a table fan directed at ur notebook keyboard..and save some space from the wall for the notebook as it flushes out the heat from the back..my idle temp is still around 39 - 41 degree (CPU: i7 -740) and GPU, GTX 460M never got past 85 degree during intensive gaming..
Give attention to GPU driver update as well..if u feel like the latest driver is screwed-up..revert back to previous driver..having the latest driver does not mean that ur GPU will fly with Crysis 3 when the temps can go nearly or beyond 100 degree..although it might fix some problems occurred from previous version..cheers lads QUOTE(Unseen83 @ Jul 7 2013, 05:13 PM) ppl offer me RM3,000 hmm is that low? i thought my asking/stated price RM3,600 i think good price for 3 month old notebook... PM me..I have Intel SSD 330 120GB..within warranty from manufacturer still Not being biased but we've discussed about the cooling system several times here in the thread The thing that bothers my actually and I'd prefer to discuss is why ASUS QC/QA so lousy by letting pass a defected notebook or why ASUS rep avoiding any question regarding their newer GPU's or their all new G750 soldered CPU/GPU. Gambling whether that 4k 5k 6k invested would return profit or would it brings hell with it. Nothing like a Russian Roulette game; you win, you're happy but if you lose you don't get anything either way Asus wins. Although we're looking at the service center improving over the years (do let me know if you have experienced it yourself or just by hearing stories spread around). It's a good news, although some might had had bad experience while in Asus service center Regarding the table fan or notebook cooling fan which is normally placed below the laptop. Do check our recent G55, it doesn't have any holes or air flow going through it from below and a notebook fan directed at a keyboard won't really help much when GPU itself is already really hot. So far everyone asking for a re-paste has or monitoring the increasing temp of the GPU/CPU which some of us go beyond 90C while mine increased by 7C over a year of usage (Do note, i rarely switched of my laptop for days also). As far as i could recall i think less than 5 has disassembled the laptop on their own, on some cases they just find it interesting to be experimenting with different types of thermal paste while others just wanted a better temp (and most that disassembled are confident in their skills). And you surely realize that as i've stated higher end laptop would dissipate or produce more heat. Just wondering on what environment are you getting 39-41C. Most of us are very aware of newer GPU driver updates Cheers~ Just my 2 cents~ |

QUOTE(Unseen83 @ Jul 7 2013, 06:04 AM) hmm G750 HJ come better GPU... i think i should wait... oh where i go to put my G75vx on sale, on here? hehe.. if not you thought why i am still holding on getting a g750? however, this might be the lousiest g-series i have ever had. g75vx might be the last known good laptop model that allows better future upgradabilities (that might make it last for the next 3 years, for work purposes) |

QUOTE(Unseen83 @ Jul 8 2013, 07:43 AM) Cooling on my G75vx is Best of the BEST Asus G series can OFFER to the series imo used stock g75vx with age less than 6 months should be priced around MYR 4k; with customizations (ram, ssd, wifi, cpu) it should starts from 4.5k (well that depends on what you have upgraded). x yes.. i change new Gaming notebook every 9+ month... now i just realized my g55 has a after-market upgrades of at least MYR 5,000.00 (so plus the original price is about MYR 10k). so don't do it like me. it's stupid (i did it because i wanted to) say 'thanks but no thanks' for low ballers. |

Its like car for example, no matter how good ur mod (car paint re-spray, rims, spoiler & etc) they always look at the original car price and after the depreciation price, and give you that kind of "I dint ask you to upgrade" face. Get the fact? edit: But to think about consumer side, if your thing sell too exp, y they still wana buy your old rig? Y not jz buy the new laptop have newer spec & upgrade which ever thing they like. A lot of ppl luring at garage sales for a reason: To get the best deal in the market. The price for Unseen83 offer, i think is quite reasonable IMHO, cheers This post has been edited by tonberry_ax: Jul 8 2013, 10:00 AM |

if you are like what you told us here that you change gaming laptops every 9 months +, i think that g750jx is a much better choice.
this entirely depends on your requirements and how you look at things. MYR 300 is nothing if you intended to upgrade your system within a year (upon purchase is much better). |

QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Jul 10 2013, 12:22 PM) Yala, wait u guide me when the laptop back mah~~ still in the middle of finding time to read reviews about .ac routers :/ Wow so powderful wo. U got buy .ac router or not? U gona spend another fortune for that lol... uh? fortune? it's about MYR 750+ only; from c-zone some more. QUOTE(Dude! @ Jul 10 2013, 12:32 PM) hye newbie to ssd, i confused with many model of ssd... from you experience, what is the best ssd for g55vw? in general, a decent ssd like hyperx is fine. my friend recommended for hyperx for common usage, plextor m5s 256gb and up already makes many very happy. however, i still suggest plextor m5pro extreme, and samsung 840 pro. they're a bit pricey but you will not regret it. QUOTE(tonberry_ax @ Jul 10 2013, 04:30 PM) oh.. but my idea is this: to have good experience, you must have good infrastructure that is relatively time-proof. you don't change infrastructure much; you only change end-point devices most of the times. routers happen to be infrastructure (well, only cutting edge technology are relatively time-proof; but the price is surely much higher :/). |

I think the costs for you to do just that is more than getting a g750
Our board circuit design might have compatibility issues also hehe; and bios must be modded to use 770m vbios. |
