GUIDE TO DISMANTLE THE G55 COMPLETELY

IF YOU ARE AFRAID OF DESTROYING YOUR MACHINE, DONT ATTEMPT THIS !!

tools needed :

1. screwdriver set (those mini screw driver that usually comes in a set of 6 different sizes.. i got mine from Daiso for RM5
2. a towel (use this as a base so you dont scratch you beloved machine)
3. Balls and some common sense
4. OPTIONAL : a small magnet

1. remove the screws in yellow and blue

1. Checking CPU/GPU temperature is essential, but it’s better to test it on games (have fun) instead of doing synthetic test (gpu/cpu benchmark). Take your own sweet time (within the 7 days grace period) and if something went amiss get one-to-one exchange from where you bought it.

2. Check all the common hardware parts that is being used normally (i.e. screens for dead pixel, speakers, keyboard keys, touch pad, rog button, card reads, keyboard backlit, fn keys, usb ports, hdmi/vga/mini display port, wifi and lan, headphone jack, dvd/blu-ray rom etc.) Do check the system info/hwinfo to see whether the specs are exactly as what you are paying for. Other than that run ram test (memtest86+); run it overnight and check results when you wake up in the morning

3. Bios, if there’s nothing wrong with it leave it running stock (there’s no need for an upgrade)

4. Update drivers as updates are usually meant for good things (most of the times) especially Graphic driver as it will support latest games.

5. Getting SSD? Perform clean install is recommended as it has lower chances of heading towards sleepless nights trying to fix. For win8 run disk optimization to trim drives, perform restart, turn of display and leave it til morning this is for system-wide SSD optimization (only after clean

just now when i cleaned up my fans and vents, i accidentally cabut the black clip that secure the flat cable to the PCB of usb ports on the left side of the laptop lol!

well, it's relatively easy to put it back; just match all the tiny holes on the black clip with the lineup of tiny copper things

The vent on GPU is very small, possible to remove battery & poke new hole for more air flow for GPU fan side? Just a thought =\

i think better don't; might cause air flow issues.

asus had abandoned ATI after G74. its probably hard to get ATI back into the releases.

AMD bought over ATi.

i know that. i mean its hard to get ATI back into asus g-series lappies.

really not sure why asus should not do that :/ i found a very recent amd graphic driver at asus' site. just no idea what it's for.

ASUS have ATI graphics card for PC.

of the three symbols, the jet fighter can only carry limited supplies of fuels and ammunition. once out of supplies, the jet fighter cannot fly and cannot shoot! there asus has told us for so many years already; we just don't realize it LOL!

depending on your needs, it might be worth to get (, or not). it's mainly about regular maintenance and upgrade abilities:

1. it has a good cooling system. it's cool and silent. the stock cooling system should be able to cope with up to i7 3840qm cpu (afaik, the cpu is still a PGA package, not BGA package; meaning you have the choice to switch cpu's. BGA is soldered cpu's).

2. it is a smaller form factor; it should be convenient for you to carry it around; of all the asus gaming laptops, the mobility of this laptop is relatively much better (only 2.5kg with battery);

3. if it's used for common work purposes, it might be powerful enough to last for the next 2 to 3 years (if it comes with i7 cpu then it's good enough). there is nothing noticeable between a ivy-bridge and haswell in terms of performance imo if you're talking about common usage. as for gaming, the 660m is fine for less demanding games; but not for current resource-hogging games.

now some short comings:

1. support service: this might be a problem to you. many said the after-sales tech support sucks; only one said they have good tech support; however if you are experienced, you can manage it yourself. there are some good tear-down guides for your reference.

alternatively, get it from local sellers like illegear, but please make yourself aware of service charges and shipping costs that their service will cost you (but i believe they will charge reasonably).

2. self maintenance: it's compact, so it's relatively hard to do regular cleaning up (fans, vents). yes you can get it done at service center, but see above.

3. upgrade abilities: from what i've read, the ram is up to 16gb (2x 8gb; 2 ram slots); the laptop has an mSATA slot (for mSATA ssd's). the problem is, there is no place holder for a screw to secure it.

4. battery: to take it out, you need to do some dis-assemblies first.

g46, like other g-series, is a good laptop. if it runs fine for the first few weeks without glitches, it's probably relatively defect-free for the rest of its shelf life. make sure you check all the common hardware right after you have purchased it (cpu/gpu temperatures under load; screen; ports - usb, hdmi, minidisplay/thunderbolt, headphone jacks, wifi; keyboard lights; all fn key combos, battery charging, etc.) this is a typical step you should do for all your electronics. if you found defects, straight away go and find the sellers for one-to-one exchange.

still, you have other choices. i would suggest you look around. the price tag on a g46 is relatively expensive if you compared the specs alone.

there is another thing about the screen. by default, from what i've heard, the resolution is kind of small (1366x768). there are options to have a slightly higher resolutions (1600x900) but i'm not sure what is available in local market.

too hot too hot.. don't know how many ppl only get stock in malaysia. Lenovo so damn hot still got stock.. asus way hotter? so sexy meh asus.. haha..

Anyone has experience replace the wireless card in this model?

i've thermal paste already.. max go up to 75C instead of 80C.. idle at 43C-46C .. outside temp is 34C or inside my house probably higher~

for wireless card.. horns already replace it with better one.. dual band i think..

for wifi card, my advice is to use an external dongle (i think it's cheaper than MYR 150.00); unless if you wanna spend MYR 300.00+ for killer bigfoot wireless-n wifi card (the only ones that i think work fine :/)
1. 1202 (2 antennas; dual band; with bluetooth)
2. 1103 (3 antennas; dual band; wifi only; from our friend at ROG forum, 1103 can reach 300mbps with the stock 2-antenna setup in the laptop).

forget about intel 6235 or 6300. the driver has issues (i tried almost all of them); or there is something wrong at the bios level (wifi white listing).

edit:

to install wifi card is simple:

1. make sure you take a picture of the positions of black and white wires;
2. take off the keyboard and display panel (the display panel blocks part of the card);
3. take off the wires;
4. replace the card;
5. put the wires back on;
6. put the display panel and keyboard back to their positions.

any chance for a g46 haswell refresh ?

currently there is no news on g46 and g55 refreshes yet (the current g46 just started to populate the local market; i saw it when i was at lyp just now).

however from the trend, asus is beginning to solder cpu's even to their 17.3" gaming laptops. it's very likely that those refreshes have soldered cpu's. i think you should wait for a bit to find that out (well, that is, if you wish to switch cpu's. the current version can let you go up to 3840qm).

i still find it ridiculous to solder cpu n gpu. haha.. everytime im reading this it really tickles deep down inside me.. lol..

i'm not sure about the gpu; but i think it's the same thing if asus is following the previous trend: custom format lol!

we understand what a manufacturer can do; there is no need to remind us again and again. i do hope they play it nicely. making everything unique in a product has a problem: customers tend to find more flexible alternatives that can provide better options. in this case it doesn't help to make the product great.

edit: but perhaps they are following the larger picture: how many of us changed cpu's/gpu's? do those custom value-added resellers (VARs) sell less customized units than stock?

Well it's sometime a form factor, whether we can upgrade it or not. Although i do have to agree quite a number that bought upgradable cpu/gpu doesn't do any upgrades but the thought that they can do so will put them at ease. Human it's all about satisfaction~.. lol

whatever it is, that's how asus plays the game with their rog gaming laptops. time will tell. for consumers, it's much easier to decide

Not so sure about that. Did you see it in any asus website? probably it could be true.

rumors said g46vr is already on the way (found at some European websites). found some screenshots too (but i'm not sure if they are real or just seo pranks). whether it's legit or not, not sure.

1. cpu is still 3630qm;
2. gpu changed to 760m.

usually asus support website will give us clues whether the said models are to be released in near future. for instance, the existence of g750 was denied but apparently it's on the way previously; when you can find the support page of that model, it's very likely the news is legit.

rumors also said intel is pushing partners to release devices with BGA packages :/ but again, it's up to the manufacturers. to me putting a BGA package in a gaming laptop is still not a good decision.

finally, rumors said there is no g55 anymore.

note that the above are all rumors. don't believe anything until they're proven to be true.

edit: .. and it's not only us. many complained about soldered cpu's.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like placing thermal will reduce some temp, but not much like PC. Unless there's way to delid the CPU & GPU.

Do u know where to get killer bigfoot wireless-n wifi card at malaysia?

uh? there are external usb dongles for wifi that can be found in garage sales, lelong.com.my, etc. the common ones are 150mbps and 300mbps.

afaik, killer cards are usually for oem only. in malaysia i think it's like no sellers carrying them. i found it at ebay, but they're not worth it imo.

oic, so what type of wifi card you are using currently? mine is stock Atheros wireless, SUX big time, not able to connect on some of the modem.

i'm using intel 6235. to me both atheros and intel work for me.

You mention that 6235 have driver issue or bio wifi white listing issue, hmm....

anyway what window you r using?

you are correct. after looking around for clues and hints, i found out many are still having problems with 6235 and 6300. many pointed the root cause to be the drivers (but i suspect it might be other factors involved). that's why i do not recommend this to you.

fyi the issue is the connectivity not being stable (fluctuates randomly). some run at very low speed.

yeah i am still using 6235 for a number of reasons:
1. to me i don't feel any degradation of wifi access (not like others; many reported that it's below 40mbps; it's not in my case);
2. i am having 150mbps to 270mbps connection speeds. it's fine for me even if it doesn't reach the full 300mbps.

running 8.

edit: .ac wifi adapters have been released, like in certain models of g75vx. new aw 17 is using .ac adapter, too. maybe you can search for broadcom 4352, 4360 too.

Of course, PC cooling other than the thermal paste, the cooling system also u can customize according to what u need.. liquid coolant and stuff.. and somemore the heat dissipation from CPU already affect the GPU and vice versa. whereas for PC u can clearly see there is alot of space for the heat to dissipate and won't effect each other. Laptop with a few degrees drop in temp is considered really good already since it will help to sustain the lifespan abit more and of course maintain it's peak performance . (there is actually calculation for when the temp is high the performance will be affected )
