Hi all, I'm a newcomer here. Not sure if this has been asked. sweat.gif

Long story short, I just bought a faulty xbox elite (unmodded NTSC-J) from a friend and got it fixed.
I got the console, power brick, cables, controllers and stuff, but no worthy game.

However there are quite a number of games fully installed on the HDD.

So, my questions are:
If a game was already fully installed on the HDD, does it require the exact same disc from which it was installed?
Or can I use a different disc (same title of course) to play the game?
And what if it was originally installed with NTSC-J disc, but now I'm putting in a PAL disc to play, would it work?
Lastly, if I swap a different DVD drive (modded/non-modded) with my current DVD drive (perhaps because the current drive is faulty), will it work and will I get banned in Live?

Reason being, my friend installed Fallout 3, GTA4 and Oblivion on the HDD.
And for some reason, I'm finding difficulty to get those titles (them being old and perhaps highly rated)
I found a seller selling PAL GTA4 but I'm not sure whether that would work.
Also found a seller for Fallout3 and was wondering if I can put the disc in and play or I have to delete and reinstall.

Had the xbox for 2 weeks now with only old demos to play (I dont have internet..yet) and the anxiety to get the games is killing me biggrin.gif

You should be able to play the game with correct disc. But anything you try to temper on XBOX360 (including change drive) will get you banhammer.

Good luck on that. Maybe you can go to Pasam Malam Section or garage sales for better luck

Yes, as long as the disc runs on your xbox then the installed game will work. Even if it doesn't, all you have to do is delete that game and reinstall it with your copy, no problem there.

Regarding the disc drive, you should never change it as any form of tampering could lead to a ban.

Noted with thanks.
Any idea on the region/encoding question?

As per my understanding, Singapore's console (I assume it's singapore set) can only play Asia's NTSC-J. And wont be able to play Japan's NTSC-J, PAL, and NTSC-U.

If it was previously installed with NTSC-J disc, can I put in PAL disc to play?

Or did I get the region/encoding concept wrongly?
Can I simply change my Locale settings to another country in Europe and then able to play PAL discs, or change to US and able to play NTSC-U discs?
This region/encoding things is a bit confusing albeit I've read some of the info in this forum.

Would anybody with PAL GTA4 disc be willing to lend it to me for try? tongue.gif

An NTSC-J console will play all forms of Region Free and NTSC-J games regardless of its country of origin. Not sure about the different region different install though.

Thanks. Indeed.
i've read further about it and checked the compatibility table on play-asia.
Indeed ntsc-j consoles would be able to play all ntsc-j and region free discs.

It's just that if I bought a disc for japan market, it could be in Japanase language with no English subtitles.
